Dry Feet 7” Release Party at Hong Kong Garden April 30

Posted on:

The surf punk trio Dry Feet recently dropped a new 7” I Can’t Sleep at Night via Evil Weevil, and they’ll be celebrating the release tonight at Hong Kong Garden. The young beach-lovin’ crew certainly isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel, but you can tell that they are attacking the genre with plenty of raw, unbridled passion. On their first label release, the band revisits the opening two tracks from their debut self-released EP Philadelphia Beach. However, they’ve flipped the order, and you’ll find more polished, balanced mixes of the party favorites. They’ll be raging the night away with Canadian garage rockers the White Wires and local pals The Eeries, Rowsdower, and The Pussy Dogs. Hong Kong Garden, (Please contact one of the acts for details.), 7pm, $3, All Ages – Alexis V.

Weekend Warrior, April 29 – May 1

Posted on:

We look forward to presenting tomorrow night’s fine lineup for the Rock to the Future Benefit at Danger Danger Gallery. In just a short amount of time, the many musicians behind this organization have worked hard to offer free after school music education to young students during a time where it’s truly needed. So the usual rager and explosion of bands will be extra special because it’s all for a good cause. It will feature the indie gyspy rock of Conversations with Enemies whose Jessica McKay (please check out our recent interview with her HERE), Josh Craft, and Monika Julien have all played an important part in helping the organization thrive. Headlining will be Algernon Cadwallader, who just came off a mini-tour with Band Name and released their first bootleg. The mood is also sure to get ethereal and majestic once Power Animal bring their experimental xylophone melodica, and Frances Quinlan and the rest of Hop Along perform their transcendental indie folk. We hope that you come out and show your support of the arts and the future of your local community! (And yes, we’ll still have plenty of energy after spending the day at the PIFA Street Fair.) Yellow Humphrey Record Release Party at JB’s April 29

Posted on:

With sweeping snare and banjo, Yellow Humphrey’s songs are charmers with warm vocals and even warmer melodies. At last releasing their debut LP Featherweights, Yellow Humphrey’s current creative efforts morphed into a collective of 15 or so like-minded locals. Led by the songwriting and soothing, mellifluous vocals of Gretchen Lohse, the band features a core of seasoned Philly music community vets in Stephen Quaranta (Paper Masques, ex-Zelda Pinwheel), Rick Flom (National Eye), Alec Meltzer (Papertrees, Summer Fiction), bassist Dave Barbaree (Paper Masques, Papertrees) and multi-instrumentalist Naeemah Maddox while compiling on the recordings the musical talents and instrumentation of Dave Hartley (Nightlands, The War on Drugs), Jonas Osterele (ex-the Teeth, Flashy Python), and many more. From delicate viola to bending licks of banjo, the understated instrumental arrangements makes songs like “Ursa Ultra” and the album’s title track feel earnest, while “Shakey Ride” render’s Yellow Humphrey’s Gretchen Lohse into indie starlet Zooey Deschanel’s vocal doppelganger, yet with more finesse and strength. These tunes are nostalgic, like Whitman or a front porch, and filled to the brim with a folky romance. Get swept away by Yellow Humphrey tonight at Johnny Brenda’s and helping to celebrate this special occasion is Featherweight’s producer Nick Krill (Spinto Band) with Mike Quinn (And the Moneynotes, The Sw!ms) performing as Young Nick Krill and Magic Mike. Eliza Hardy-Jones (Buried Beds, The Mural and the Mint) will also be adding her always charming vocals. It’s a packed house of local talent so it should certainly be a nice place to settle down for the evening. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Dianca Potts

FYI on DIYs in PHL: Rock to the Future

Posted on:

In a time when it is obvious that our government is failing to help or care about our art programs and the future of our youth, it has become apparent that it is up to each individual to take on that responsibility and do what they can to rectify this horrible injustice. Rock to the Future’s Founding Director Jessica McKay is a local individual that has stepped up to the challenge. Her award-winning Rock to the Future is “a free after school music education and youth development program open to Philadelphia students ages 9-14. The program focuses on the incorporation of music education with academics to create success in school and in life by improving cognitive thinking, learning capacity, socialization skills, self-esteem, and creative thinking.” The Deli Magazine will be presenting the Rock to the Future Benefit Show this Saturday at Danger Danger Gallery with local favorites and do-gooders Algernon Cadwallader, Conversations with Enemies, Hop Along and Power Animal. Please come join us and help support a truly worthwhile cause! But first, check out our interview with McKay HERE, and we hope that her thoughts and actions are as inspirational to you as they are to us.

American Babies CD Release Party at WCL April 28

Posted on:

You might know guitarist Tom Hamilton from his work with local electronic jam band Brothers Past. He started his side project American Babies as a songwriting outlet more heavily influenced by The Beatles and Bruce Springsteen than The Disco Biscuits. During Brothers Past’s hiatus, it became more than a side project with a revolving door of some of the jam band scene’s most notable rising stars. Well, Brothers Past is back and so is Hamilton with his American Babies’ sophomore effort the country-tinged Flawed Logic, which was produced by Bill Moriarty (Dr. Dog, Man Man, Hoots and Hellmouth) and is available via Engine Room Recordings. He’ll be celebrating his Philly CD release party tonight at World Café Live and expect plenty of special guests like Joe Russo (Further), Dave Dreiwitz (WEEN), Scott Metzger (RANA), Eric Slick (Dr. Dog), and Aron Magner (The Disco Biscuits) along with openers Mason Porter and Former Belle. World Café Live, 3025 Walnut St., 8pm, $12 adv/$14 door, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

Philly Tech Week Chip Music Showcase at PhilaMOCA April 28

Posted on:

Philly Tech Week, a celebration of technology and innovation in the city that aims to influence collaboration across various influences, is moving on in full effect. And PhilaMOCA has the honor of hosting a multisensory explosion tonight when it plays host to the festivals official chiptune showcase. The show wouldn’t be complete without tripped out symphonic masterminds of merging chiptune with rock, Cheap Dinosaurs. The Game Boy will be cranked to 11 when mathematical madman An0va brings his lo-fi electronic chaos. Ever since leaving jam fusion group MJ Project, Paul Weinstein has been entertaining the masses under the name Chipocrite. And before he takes the TooManyGames Expo and Lebowski Fest Philadelphia by storm, he’ll be ready to blow you away with his epic compositions. The event will also feature live visuals from VBLANK. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 7:30pm, $5 w/RSVP ($8 w/o), All Ages (Flier by Animal Style) – Bill McThrill

The Deli’s Featured Artist(s) of the Month: The Tweeds

Posted on:

Besides winning our most recent local poll, The Tweeds were also picked as Featured Artist(s) of the Month on The Deli’s national page. We had a chance to toss our get-to-know-you questions at front man and multi-instrumentalist Derek Sheehan. Below is the skinny on The Tweeds.

The Deli: How did the band start?

Derek Sheehan: During my sophomore year at Penn State, I became very frustrated with being stuck at school and not being able to play music with my friends from home so over winter break of 2007-2008, Sam Plumridge and I started Bobbie Perdu as a melodic post-rock band with Sam’s brother Ben and long-time friend and musician Sean Morris. That didn’t last too long though because of distance issues. Cantrev Caffidor was a fairly successful local ambient, prog-rock band. When they split, Sam and I asked Nic Sheehan (my brother) and Peter Moretzsohn to join up with us and thus, The Tweeds began.
TD: Where did the band name The Tweeds come from?

DS: We were originally called Bobbie Peru. We were forced to change our name due to apparent copyright issues so we changed it to Bobbie Perdu. We eventually decided to change the name and Cody Saia, good friend and touring guitarist for The Tweeds, suggested The Tweeds and it stuck.

TD: What are your biggest musical influences?

DS: It is tough not to just list your whole musical library on this one, but our biggest musical influences are My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, The Byrds, The Grateful Dead, Buffalo Springfield, The Dandy Warhols, Owen, American Football, BJM, and many others.

TD: What artists (local, national and/or international) are you currently
listening to?

DS: I cannot speak for the rest of the band, but currently, I am listening to:
All Things Must Pass – George Harrison; Colour Trip – Ringo Deathstarr; Earth to the Dandy Warhols – The Dandy Warhols; any Grateful Dead bootlegs; Black Lips; Beat the Devil’s Tattoo – BRMC; Phoenix – The Warlocks; Pure Phase – Spiritualized; Buffalo Springfield self-titled; Legs Like Tree Trunks; Occult Radiance – Fleeting Joys (many more).

TD: What’s the first concert that you ever attended and first album that you ever bought?

DS: The first concert I ever willingly attended was The Monkees at the Mann Music Center in Fairmount Park, and first album was The Cool Runnings Soundtrack

TD: What do you love about Philly?

DS: Steaks, Good Micro Breweries, Philly Sports and drive an hour east, you’re at the beach. Drive an hour west – you’re in an old Appalachian forest.

TD: What do you hate about Philly?

DS: Not too much. I wish the venues would have more all-ages shows.

TD: What are your plans for 2011?

DS: Graduate from Penn State, start recording our second album, and touring.

TD: What was your most memorable live show?

DS: We always have a great time when we play, but the best show was probably Café Campus in Montréal. That weekend was just one big blur. The show was great but hanging out in Montréal for a weekend was a hilariously wild time. We walked back to our hostel after the show because we were all too wasted to drive. It was probably 40 blocks. We got back to the hostel and drank whiskey in the parking lot until 6 am watching the footy from the show. Finally, we walked into the room, and Sam starts laughing hysterically at the top of his lungs because he thought we had walked into the wrong room (he had never stayed in a hostel before). We had about 8 other roommates sleeping on bunk beds in our room, and I can only imagine how annoyed they were when we busted into the room completely trashed at 6 am, especially when I started throwing banana peels at Cody.

TD: What’s your favorite thing to get at the deli?

DS: A 24 oz Heineken keg can and pork roll sandwich.
