New Plaque Marks EP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

With six tracks that leave you in tatters, Anxiety Driven Nervous Worship, the debut EP from the Plaque Marks, is a primal force to be reckoned with. Available on vinyl via Learning Curve Records and CD courtesy of Reptilian Records, the short selection from the supergroup of local heavyweights exhibits a relentless, haunting, rhythmic and vocal snarl. That chainsaw-grinding tension and power looms, before boiling over the surface in ominous, heart-pumping sludge. Kung Fu Necktie will play host to the band’s EP release show on Wednesday, November 15, with additional support from Bardus, Rubber, and Buildings. (Photo by Dan Torrieri)

Video Premiere: Spa Moans “Throat”

Posted on:

We are proud to premiere the haunting new video from Spa Moans for her single “Throat”. The track is taken from the forthcoming mixtape “Obedient Vibrations” which is due out on November 17th via Portland’s Drop Medium.

We were able to ask the label about the making of the “Throat” video which was directed by Andrew Gibson.

"We just wanted Jenny to look very unique and not surrounded by anything or anyone. We had the water be a large part of the imagery due to the songs atmosphere and vague rhythmic structure. We did the smokey chain shots in a closet. We had to buy a lot of old, shitty televisions and just turned them on to static to add some weird lightning effects. I think at the time we were just sort of thinking of spooky sci-fi horror movies and the imagery/ lighting associated with those – movies like The Thing, Videodrome, Crash etc. We definitely wanted it to be hypnotizing and haunting but in a way that supported the song.”

New Friendship Album Available for Streaming

Posted on:

Orindal Records will be releasing Friendship‘s new album, Shock Out Of Season, on November 3; however, one can sample it early – courtesy of HyperMachine. A continuous flow of introspective, lyrical assessments loosely travels on a road paved with the timely tap and twinkle of percussion and synth, forging both unity and space. A serene sense of progress pushes these compositions forward, without abandoning the earnest imagery that serves as its foundation. Friendship and Power Animal will be co-headlining a dual record release show, supported by Tall Friend and Free Cake For Every Creature, on Friday, November 17 at Everybody Hits. A Shadow of Jaguar to drop new LP, RAW

Posted on:

A Shadow of Jaguar plays hazy, 70s-inspired rock n roll sans pomp and/or circumstance. The Brooklyn-based-via-Colorado duo are gearing up to release their first ever LP, RAW, and if single "Veruca Bath Salts" is anything to judge by, the album’s title is more than apt. Blending bare-knuckle and gritty rock with tongue-in-cheek lyricism and old-school cool, A Shadow of a Jaguar is one feline-themed band you’re going to want to pounce on. Riot grrrl trio Thick performs at Union Pool 11.09

Posted on:

If you haven’t checked out Thick yet, now is probably a good time. The Brooklyn garage rock trio has been buzzing lately with a nod from The New York Times in an article on how women are making the best rock music and a feature on Glassnote Records Noteworthy Compilation. The attention is much deserved. Thick play hooky garage-pop that marries grit, power and three way harmonies. Whether you’re already a fan or just want to see what the hype is about, you can catch the band at Union Pool on November 9 with The Wants, BLED, and Future Twin. – Cameron Carr

Zuli releases debut LP “On Human Freakout Mountain” in pre-Halloween celebration

Posted on:

Far be it from Brooklyn breakout band Zuli to do anything with subtlety; they’ve released their debut album On Human Freakout Mountain at a pre-Halloween fiesta at Murmrr Ballroom, complete with some bloody Facebook pics to promote the event. The new LP contains ten tracks from Ryan Camenzuli — the brain behind Zuli — which carry the groove-laden jams of 2015’s Supernatural Voodoo up another level. Played live, these songs electrify any crowd; at the Halloween release show, produced by creative collectives CON TEMPLATE and Loop Troupe, they made listeners catch their breath more than any ghoul ever could. Listen to the title track of On Human Freakout Mountain below. – Will Sisskind

Sweet Cream makes tasteful classic rock, plays Mercury Lounge Nov. 13th

Posted on:

Sweet Cream is a band that sits comfortably in their genre. Namely, classic rock, though with a hint of country, and a few mingling folksy harmonies. "No Light Light" has a self-aware, sultry darkness to it, bringing out slick guitar fills from within the crevices of the arrangement. The band might not be breaking down walls, but their music approaches every aspect of classic rock with taste and nuance – Sweet Cream are certainly carving their name into the plaster. Catch them live at Mercury Lounge with The Wild Reeds on November 13th. -Geena Kloeppel

New Shamir LP Available for Streaming

Posted on:

A lot has changed in our world since Shamir Bailey’s debut full-length, Ratchet, landed via XL Recordings in 2015. In a social climate heated by derision on high, a pervasive distrust in information, and an undesiring malaise out-sourced upon youth culture, the messaging voiced on Shamir’s latest release, Revelations, rings all the more pertinent to our present moment. The new LP (which is currently streaming over at NPR and officially drops on November 3 via Father/Daughter Records) is the product of soul-searching; the result is a collection of burgeoning, guitar-laden, lo-fi pop that sets the stage for Shamir to speak candidly of his experiences, while also conveying the desire to do so through a musical vocabulary that marks a departure from what the industry came to expect of the young artist. As a moment of reclamation for the Vegas transplant, Revelations is a call to action to empower a generation of disenfranchised kids mangled by financial burdens, grappling with existential anxieties and self-hate. Finding one’s voice is a solitary task, yet the result is often surprisingly resonant within a collective struggle. The result of Shamir’s inward journey is a collection of bedroom pop bliss that sounds stripped down and vulnerable, yet wholly confident in their prevailing over adversity. – Josh Kelly
