Loop around with Other Lights and more tonight

Posted on:

Fans of pleasantly loopy, exploratory type rock have got an opportunity to catch some great under-the-radar acts at a showcase tonight for free at the Turn Turn Turn.

What tonight’s three billed bands share, though coming from somewhat different corners of it, is an experimental fuzziness that makes them all the more appealing. Clawfoot Slumber, who are releasing their new album The Stars Within You Beckon To Be Carried Forth From The Dark in mid-September, have got a dreamy, psych folk tinge to them. It’s fairly different from the heavy loop play coming from Other Lights, who lean more towards a mathy, progressive post-rock side of creation that is entirely too easy to get sucked into. Gladness finds their way almost in the middle, except with the shoegaze characteristics of My Bloody Valentine meets Slowdive with a J. Mascis type vocality. All in all, this lineup touches perfectly on a few different bits of experimental fun.

The show is free, for the 21+ crowd and starts at 8pm, so head out and enjoy.

Houston Strong: Bands Come Together For Relief Fundraising

Posted on:

Some of Austin’s best bands took action on short notice to put together a show that would help raise money for the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund administered by the Greater Houston Community Foundation. Do512 presents Black Joe Lewis, The Octopus Project, Robert Ellis, Walker Lukens, The Deer, and Otis the Destroyer who will all be taking the stage at the Mohawk on Friday, September 1st. If the circumstances hadn’t been so dire and bleak for bringing this all-star lineup together, a show like this might be celebrated as the best local lineup of the year. The fact is that most of us here in Austin feel useless, since most of us can only donate to help the flood victims. This show offers an outlet to come together and show solidarity with our fellow Texan while also helping bring some monetary aid and supplies to the relief effort.

Donations of diapers, formula, blankets, pillows, toiletries, cleaning, supplies, first aid kits, new socks, new undergarments, bottled water and non-perishable food will be accepted as well.

To make a monetary donation, check out this site: https://ghcf.org/hurricane-relief

The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Shy Boyz

Posted on:

Much like their debut album 2 Horses (and 2 Naked Boys), Shy Boyz founders King SoloMon and Airyon Love offer up some intriguing insights into their origin, creative process, future plans, etc., when they answered our “get to know ya” questions HERE, which correspond to their recent winning of The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll. Meshing influences of funk & soul, with the eclectic strangeness of The Mothers of Invention and Weird Al, Shy Boyz create an odd, groovy dynamic. However, once you think you’ve honed in on their point of view, a response emerges from left field. (Photo by Charles Wrzesniewski)

LAPêCHE celebrate record release at Footlight on 9.08

Posted on:

Watching LAPêCHE’s video for “Breaking Parts” (streaming below) is like traveling back in time to when there were still music videos on MTV and the lines between alt rock and mainstream were much more blurred. The single is a catchy chorus-driven ’90s flashback complete with intricate guitar lines, tight drums, and the slightly melancholic vocals of front-woman Krista Holly Diem (who is married to the bassist, Dave Diem, a last name to be… carped!) The Brooklyn four-piece is getting ready to play their record release show at the Footlight on September 8th. – Lilly Milman

Francesca Milazzo brings roots-influenced soul to Communion NYC (9.05)

Posted on:

When singer-songwriter Francesca Milazzo started her music career, she was leaving everything behind; she dropped out of college and abandoned a potential ROTC scholarship to begin writing and recording. Her sultry brand of blue-eyed soul draws inspiration from classic R&B and blues music, and finds its home comfortably in New York City, despite Southern musical influences. Her single “Little Boy” (streaming below) is just one example of this cool but classic folksy style. Catch her performing at the Rockwood Music Hall at Communion NYC on Stage 1 on September 5th. – Lilly Milman

Autonomics finally share ‘Debt Sounds’ in the States

Posted on:

Infectiously poppy garage rock act Autonomics have been around for awhile now. There’s not really any band in Portland that sounds quite like them – fast paced garage wrapped in a delightful pop punk robe, with hooks as catchy and toe-tapping as the next. For a while now, their full length Debt Sounds has been in heavy circulation in Europe. It’s been highly anticipated over here in the States and it’s finally made its debut, with Autonomics having commissioned a couple bands to help them in the release show process.

Devy Metal and Ice Queens are slated to excite the crowd as they await to hear Autonomics’ new sounds in full. Aside from whatever they’ve shared of Debt Sounds on stage, "Superfuzz" and "Southern Funeral" have been the only ones available online to dive into. Hear the album live on 9.2 at the Doug Fir Lounge.

Obliques bring genre-bending alt pop to Baby’s All Right (09.05)

Posted on:

For a band with only five released tracks, New York’s Obliques have certainly discovered a definitive sound. The genre-bending, groovy, alternative-pop takes cues from popular 80’s sophisti-pop, without getting overly saturated in nostalgia. Their newest track, “Are You Still Mine?” (streaming below), is a crescendo of supple harmonies, funky synth beats, and catchy, repetitive lyrics. The single is influenced by all of the best parts of the 80s, but there is one major difference between the two—Obliques exercise a restraint in their songwriting that strips it down from all the grandiose cheesiness that far too many 80s bands fell victim to. You can find Obliques playing their next live show at Baby’s All Right on September 5th at 8 pm. –Lilly Milman

GET OFF THE COP – FUZZY NOISE ROCK FROM THE HAMMER!

Posted on:

Get Off The Cop is a noise rock band based in Hamilton. Their latest EP “Lipstick Tim” was released last year. The title track opens up with a thumping bass line reminiscent of 90’s punk rock while the singer lazily mumbles through the verses. The guitar comes in heavy for the choruses while the vocals dig deep into the gut to unleash a furious growl. Maybe not the best tunes for a slow drive to work on Monday morning but after work when you’re ready to rage you might really enjoy Get Off The Cop. – Kris Gies

The Great Escape live up to their name on “Let Me Go Wild”

Posted on:

The Great Escape brings on the funk on "Let Me Go Wild." Fronted by Ingrid Andersson’s chirpy yet commanding vocals, the Venice-based band feed from a miscellany of influences ranging from classic soul to sleek pop rock. "Wild" takes many stylistic shifts during its lively three minutes, touching on some neo-soul licks and brass band theatrics worthy of a grand romp. The trio wholly embraces the old in the new without resorting to shameless parody, and really, when you’re basing your song’s structure off of Tommy James & the Shondells’ classic "Mony Mony" you can’t do no wrong.

New Callowhill LP Available for Streaming

Posted on:

The quartet of Callowhill will be celebrating the release of its debut LP The Way Out (Exotic Fever), which officially drops tomorrow, with a show this evening at Boot & Saddle, supported by Rogue Conjurer and Great Weights. The album intersects a plethora of styles/genres. Calm, ruminative emotives conjure a mystic quality; however, that serenely somber setting serves as a precursor to impending heaviness. It can systematically encircle, exploring a depth or washing over in loose, melodic precision.
