Trophy Wife Welcomes Queer Sounds from the New South & Other Parts at PhilaMOCA July 29

Posted on:

The winning combination of Trophy Wife is a local socially/politically/personally-conscious post-hardcore two-piece consisting of D.C. transplants drummer Katy Otto (co-founder of Exotic Fever Records and formerly of Del Cielo) and guitarist Diane Foglizzo. Their lyrical themes surround the feminist and LGBT perspective and experience while still maintaining a more universal appeal for others. Tonight at PhilaMOCA, they’ll be opening the music portion of the evening when they welcome the queercore-friendly lineup of out-of-towners Hilly Eye, ZOO (ex-Little Teeth), Field Mouse, and Allison Weiss. But before the aural stimulation begins, there will be a 30-minute screening of filmmaker Meredith Heil’s Whistlin’ Dixie, an exploration of how the queer lo-fi DIY scene is “altering the political and social climate of the new South for generations to come.” You can check out a trailer for the movie HERE. Get Schooled by Norwegian Arms at JB’s July 29

Posted on:

If you are a fan of this site and local Philly music blogs, then you should already know the interesting back story of Fulbright scholar, songwriter, mandolin player, one of the founding members of the OX, and Norwegian Arms mastermind Brendan Mulvihill (a.k.a. Keith Birthday). What you don’t know from reading blogs are how impassioned the live performances can be from the minialist weirdo pop folkster, especially when joined by partner in crime Eric Slick from Dr. Dog on drums and buckets. Well, tonight is your chance when Norwegian Arms opens for Avi Buffalo and Nik Freitas at Johnny Brenda’s. So be in the know and get schooled this evening! (And while you are at it, you can get a head start on your education with Norwegian Arms’ EP Trimmings of Hides, which can download for free HERE.) Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Q.D. Tran

Hermit Thrushes, Scott Churchman, and Friends Weird Out at Bookspace July 29

Posted on:

Though the much-beloved DIY space the OX has never made the come back that we had hoped would happen and currently appears to be nearing its final days, its residents and former residents are still helping to shape the local art community for the better. One of the last remaining original inhabitants, Greg Johnson, was approached to host a lineup that he couldn’t pass up at Bookspace. Tonight’s bill will be anchored by the frenetic avant-folk sounds of Hermit Thrushes (you can check out and download their Daytrotter Session that was posted this past March HERE) and the dark ghostly folk of Scott Churchman (who should have a new album coming out in the near the future). Imported for the evening are Baltimore’s noisy art rockers Dope Body, D.C.’s experimental pop outfit Hume, and Brooklyn’s avant garde lo-fi sextet Cloud Becomes Hands. The lineup is sure to be as unique as the venue it is being held in. Bookspace, 1113 Frankford Ave., 8pm, $6, All Ages (Hermit Thrushes Illustration by Johnnie Cluney; Scott Churchman Photo by George A. Schwab) – Alexis V.

Get Toxic w/Spank Rock at The Barbary July 28

Posted on:

Alternative hip hop/electro group Spank Rock is coming out of their brief hiatus tonight for a special show at Toxic, the top 40 dance party night hosted by resident DJs Dirty South Joe and Low Budget, at The Barbary before heading off on their U.S. tour with Kesha. Emcee Spank Rock (a.k.a. Naeem Juwan) and producer XXXChange (a.k.a. Alex Epton) have steadily gained recognition for their genre-blending style of club oriented hip hop since 2005’s single “Put That Pussy on Me” and the release of their debut album YoYoYoYoYo back in 2006. The duo is scheduled to release their long-awaited sophomore album Everything Is Boring and Everyone Is a Fucking Liar (great fucking name), which will have contributions from Santigold, Neptunes’ Pharrell Williams, Big Freedia, Sam Spiegel (a.k.a. Squeak E. Clean of N.A.S.A), and Chris Rockswell, on September 27 via their label Bad Blood Records. Based on the album’s lead single “Energy,” a club banger featuring a sample of “Vitamin C” by Krautrock legends Can, expect Spank Rock to be taking their sound in a different direction with the upcoming release. Be one of the first to hear what they’ve been up to lately! The Barbary, 951 Frankford Ave., FREE, 11pm (Open Bar from 9 – 10pm), 21+ – Dan Brightcliffe

One Day Craft on Craft Market and Concert Series w/The Extraordinaires & On the Water at Barkentine Gazela July 27

Posted on:

As an avid concertgoer, I’m always looking for unique venues and concert experiences. Well, catching a couple of my favorite local acts, The Extraordinaires and On the Water, today aboard the Portuguese tall ship Gazela Primero, a 177 foot Barkentine Square Rigger docked on Penn’s Landing, certainly sounds like one of them. They’ll be performing as part of the One Day Craft on Craft Market and Concert Series, which will also feature small businesses and cultural institutions selling their wares. Unfortunately, it will be a midday event so all you 9-to-5ers will be missing out unless you find a way to sneak off for a couple of hours. Come on – you don’t really like your jobs anyways! Alt folks embrace the perks of alt living and head toward the water. What else do you have to do today?
