New Son Step Single Available for Streaming & Download

Posted on:

With tonight’s round 2 of Philly For Bernie Sanders concert at Boot & Saddle (which also features Tutlie and Tinmouth), the quartet of Son Step has released a fresh pair of songs to mark the occasion. “Mai Lai Wah,” which draws its title from the late-night, drunken-eats, Chinatown fave David’s Mai Lai Wah, slips into a mesmerizing, low-key, electro/synth, subtly percussive groove, washed over with the soft touch of vocal harmony. “Pink Knit” allows you to smoothly slip into time with the beat, pleasantly yet purposely paced to enjoy the ride. With their full-length, Natural Majique, due out this year, these songs certainly tease the ears.

Baltimore’s hip-hip fusion Joint Effort to play the Tree House Lounge, 1/22

Posted on:

They may only be three-strong, but Joint Effort have the musical chops and talent of a dozen. With guitar riffs supplied by Neil Durr, the musicality has strong similarity to the jams of Jimi Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughan, capturing some of the essence of blues and blending it with their rock and hip-hop bedrock. Flawless bass lines from the hands of Durr’s brother Evan tie together the sick string work with the lyrically-rich verses spilled by vocalist Eric Means. Laying down equal parts philosophy and commentary, Means freestyles are as poignant and evocative as Flobots or Lupe Fiasco. You can catch this fantastic trio take the stage at the Tree House Lounge, 1/22, with Mary El and Edjacated Phools. -Jonathan Goodwin

Buzz Alert! New Jersey’s fiery soul singer Donna Missal

Posted on:

Two months ago, New Jersey-based musician Donna Missal released the instantly memorable “Keep Lying” (streaming below). Roped through with breaking guitars, the bluesy song truly impresses thanks to the singer’s voice and delivery. A deeply strong howl-yelp – it surges forth just when a stop or fade seems sensible – Missal’s desire to not learn of her addressee’s true feelings is so impassioned that nothing will get in the way. Such ferocious suspense gives "Keep Lying" urgency, as Missal sounds out the blues with raw heat. Donna just announced a show for Communion Music on February 2nd at Rockwood Music Hall – if soul is your thing, do not miss, there is obviously a lot of potential here. – Zach Weg

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Tall Juan plays Berlin on 01.09 + tours Europe

Posted on:

Far Rockaway, Queens resident Tall Juan wears his Ramones influences well on the most recent EP “Why Not.” Moving from his home in Buenos Aires, Argentina to NYC’s borough that gave birth to the original garage rockers shows an admirable level of devotion. Though Joey Ramone may be the obvious initial point of reference, there are elements of Richard Hell’s vocal inflections sprinkled throughout the tall young man’s songs. In keeping with that era’s proto-punk ethos, all songs are approximately a minute and a half in length: opening track “Why Not” may reflect Johnny’s quick chord change progressions, but are delivered instead on an acoustic guitar. “It’s True” (streaming) channels the buoyant rhythm of “Sheena Is A Punk Rocker” with lyrical content closer to “The KKK Took My Baby Away.” Third track “I Don’t Know What To Do” clocks in at barely over a minutes and leans a bit closer to Hell’s legendary and overlooked Voidoids. Final track is a cover of the Dee Dee penned “Chinese Rock” that playfully interprets its lyrics. Tall Juan will be playing one more show in New York at Berlin on January 9th, before heading out on a European tour that will continue on through the month of February. by Dave Cromwell

The Deli Philly’s January Record of the Month: Total Freedom – Spacin’

Posted on:
Spontaneous and impromptu moments come together to form Spacin’s sophomore release Total Freedom, available via Philly indie label Richie Records. Pieced together over a multitude of recording sessions spanning about two years, the band’s carefree attitude leads us on another sonic adventure through the minds of Jason Killinger (Birds of Maya) and his collaborators.

On the album’s opening track, “Over Uneasy,” you are introduced to a heavy dose of good ole rock ‘n’ roll, with interlocking guitars playing off each other and the bounce of the drumbeat helping to rev things up. After laments about “a life of debt or a life of crime” or to even show up to work at all, the first taste of Total Freedom runs joyously into a frenetic jam, before the hypnotic guitar riffs disintegrate into “Kensington Real,” a dissonant instrumental, which is meant to represent the sounds of Killinger’s neighborhood, where most of the album was recorded in his basement. Breaking out of the chaos comes slacker rock anthem “Human Condition.” It feels so good despite claims of feeling “so bad.”

The group’s first single from the release, “Titchy,” gives you a glimpse into a husband and wife’s private, intimate moment. (Get that mind out of the gutter.) The über lo-fi track revolves around a riff that Killinger had been working on, and he is simply backed by his wife/drummer, Eva Killinger, on the skins, laying down pro-motorik beats, during their lone session without the rest of the gang. “Stopping Man” comes in heavy with a dirty tribal-funk feel and exorcism vocals, before bringing an abrupt end to the A-side of the record.

On the flip side, you’ll find guitarist Paul Sukeena (ex-Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band) plucking away in a stream of consciousness manner, seemingly unaware of himself being recorded. It’s a rather serene moment on the album, before being torn to shreds by the rocker “U.S. Ruse,” a freewheelin’ anthem inspired by and with a verse borrowed from the MC5’s “The American Ruse.” Jason Killinger’s usual laidback drawl surprisingly attacks with urgency. It’s a head-bobbing, cathartic discharge of emotion that howls with ferocity – definitely one of the standout moments on Total Freedom. Appropriately closing things out is the record’s title track, which continues the necessary release of tension that is found throughout the LP.

While Spacin’s debut Deep Thuds will always remain in heavy rotation on my record player, Total Freedom once again should place Spacin’ on the lips of vinyl collectors as an essential part of any garage-psych collection. The lo-fi recordings revel in being very in the moment, providing the feeling of sunshine on your skin and wind blowing through your hair – escapism at its finest. – Q.D. Tran

Catch One of the Last Great 2015 Austin Indie Releases- Darkbird’s “I Remember Feeling My Fingers Slip”

Posted on:

So there you are, sitting around in your bathrobe, feeling like a lost dog, thumbing through NYE photos and wondering, “What the hell happened to 2015?” Well, that shit’s gone. Time to deal with it and accept that we’ve seen the last of that year…at least, that is, for the most part.

It just so happens that one fine thing that emerged at the tail end of last year was a fantastic EP release from the folks of the band Darkbird, one of our co-winners for December’s Artist of the Month Poll. Darkbird released their first EP early December 2015 entitled “I Remember Feeling My Fingers Slip,” and with the alluring voice of front woman Kelly Barnes, and the dark tantalizing sound from guitarist Brian Cole, a listen or two to this new moody record from one of Austin’s best emerging indie rock bands is definitely something to pencil in your 2016 schedule.

You can also catch their next show January 3rd (tomorrow, for those reading this at posting) at The Sidewinder- a free show as part of our city’s very badass “Free Week”. If you can’t catch that show, don’t worry; they have a very busy schedule for free week and are playing multiple shows, so go and check out their Facebook page to see which one of their next shows you can attend. While you’re at it, how about throw them a like so you can keep up and support another great local Austin band, and one that you (that being our dear readers) have voted into glory and fame (or something like that) on this very site.
