Dot Dash opening for Psychedelic Furs!

Posted on:

Ahhhhh! Dot Dash is a last second addition to the Psychedelic Fur show at the State Theater, this Thursday (tomorrow, 4/3). I think tickets are still available. I hope tickets are still available. Dot Dash is the perfect opener for the Furs and I’m stoked they’re getting this kind of exposure. If you miss this show, because it sells out (which is the only legitimate reason), you can catch Dot Dash on April 26th, headlining the Black Cat mainstage (with Alarms & Controls, Regents and Highway Cross). –Natan Press

Terraplane Plane Sun announce new album Generation Blues, share new track “The Stone”

Posted on:

Venice quintet Terraplane Sun began as loping, bluesy musicians residing in a hillside somewhere up in Laurel Canyon. That side of them will never perish, though, but there’s something startingly joyful about their new track "The Stone" – the band is letting loose with a graceful fete that doesn’t shy from their roots-rock breathren, sharing a more accesible, though still thoroughly complex songcraft that has the same shimmering allure of their neighbors Local Natives. The title of their latest is called Generation Blues (which comes out in July), though, and with Wilco/My Morning Jacket producer Dave Trumfio in the helm it will surely throw some curveballs. Check out a preview of their new album below, and make sure to see them at the Troubadour on April 23 before they complete their nationwide trek in May.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah Announce New Album “Only Run” Out June 3rd

Posted on:
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, the brainchild of Alec Ounsworth, has announced that their new album Only Run will be self-released on June 3rd.  In support of the album, CYHSY head out on a North American tour, which includes a local stop  at Johnny Brenda’s on June 27th. As a preview of Only Run,  the band shared “Coming Down,” which can be heard below. The song ‘s smooth-layered structure gives it a strong sound that erupts as it progresses, Ounsworth’s softer vocals playing off the deep-tone of The National’s Matt Berninger to produce a conversational dynamic. Tickets for the summer tour go on sale this weekend.

Black Cat Sylvester at The End 4.4.14

Posted on:

Black Cat Sylvester keeps pretty busy around Nashville, between producing for various projects, marketing his brainchild, the Synth Table, and harboring a deep dislike of penguins. Seriously, visit his website for his logic (I’m convinced), then while you’re there, poke around and listen to what he’s concocted. If Dr. Who and George Clinton met and decided to dabble in dubstep, this is what they might have come up with. Check out "Laffy Daffy" to hear his patent (pending) in action.  He’s performing at The End this Friday with Fistikuffs and Al-D. The night starts at 9, and cover is $5. Show up fully prepared for things to get weird. -Terra James-Jura

Ratking drops new video in anticipation of new album

Posted on:

Ratking’s new album drops in the US on April 8. If “So Sick Stories” and the accompanying video are any indication of this Uptown trio’s aesthetic, their premier album ‘So It Goes’ portends to be a quantum leap for Hip Hop’s current sonic landscape. MCs Wiki and Hak, like a reborn El-P and Bigg Jus, scatter abstract syllables and concrete imagery like shards of broken glass on so many Harlem overpasses. They seem to conjure the spirits of the city’s restless ghosts in their frenetic verses, and the accompanying beats bear somber witness. U.K. up-and-comer King Krule dips in for an intense hook on the track; an unlikely yet brilliant complement to Ratking’s gritty and astute meditations. – BrokeMC

The Deli Philly’s April Record of the Month: Creepoid – Creepoid

Posted on:

The perfect solace for winter’s passing, Creepoid’s second full-length self-titled LP combines the zeitgeist of 90’s grunge with pristine dissonance and somber lyricism. Released earlier this month by No Idea Records, Creepoid is eerie, melodic and stirring from beginning to end.

The record’s introductory track “Nauda” opens with a singular note that swells into a melody, aligning itself with the listener in a way that feels confessional yet synonymous. A well-wrought continuation of the earnest diction reminiscent of Horse Heaven, “Nauda” is as bittersweet as its vocals, informed by the paradox of loneliness and longing. Expanding into a cinematically moody soundscape, guitars wail like sirens, beckoning chords to crash and settle into a fading ricochet – a premonition of “Sunday.” Coupled with acoustic strums and crisp vocal croons, a solemn request, “take my light and pull it out,” is beautifully melodic with perfectly placed tambourine that brings to mind the memorable mood concentrated. Exploring the affect and consequence of relational presence and its subsequent absence, the orchestration of “Sunday” renders a relatable narrative evocatively raw and sincere.

“Yellow Wallpaper” ignites with driving bass and swirling riffs. As if resurrecting the perfection of Jeremy Enigk (ex-Sunny Day Real Estate), a la “Killed By An Angel” meets “Pillars,” the song evokes an eerie all consuming sense of the sublime that centers the track’s duration. Like an extension of Horse Heaven’s “Hollow Doubt,” the contextual weight of “Yellow Wallpaper” is harmonically haunting and intentionally poignant. “Baptism” washes over its listener in waves of riffs and echoed vocals that occupy an emotive territory similar to lesser-known tracks by Sonic Youth, subverted and painted darker by the brooding buzz reminiscent of shoegaze greats like My Bloody Valentine.

In its decline, “Baptism” casts a feeling of transcendent submersion, befitting its namesake. With a crystallized aggression, “Gout” does the same – urgent and arresting with visceral shouts and screams. “Stay Inside” is considerably more subdued than the album’s preceding tracks but equally mesmerizing, unfolding “Tired Eyes,” a hypnotic chant of a fatigued psychedelic. “Golden String” feels slightly optimistic, while “Acrimony” blossoms then retracts into a reserved yet deliberate ballad that demands its audience’s attention like a gloomy lullaby with teeth. “Vulgar,” warm and sunlit, is lush and arresting, setting the stage for the album’s closer “Old Tree,” a jubilant ending to yet another epic compilation of clairvoyant anthems evoked by Creepoid. – Dianca Potts

New Song: “Your Love Will Blow Me Away When My Heart Aches.” – Son Little

Posted on:

His voice may already be familiar to you, but now Aaron Livingston, aka Son Little, is ready to get his. The endlessly soulful singer was featured on The Root’s undun, as well as RJD2’s Icebird project, and now he is coming out on his own, showing why such stalwarts were clamoring to work with him. The guitarist and singer’s torment and pain manifests itself into a haunting, slow-burning new track called, “Your Love Will Blow Me Away When My Heart Aches.” The sparse but emotive track is highlighted, unsurprisingly, by Livingston’s powerful vocals. The Anti- Record signed Son Little already has some important friends, so he is sure to be on the rise.  Check out the track and video below.

Drone Ranger and Le Yikes Surf Club play Kung Fu Necktie April 1st

Posted on:

The psyched out, cosmic rock of Drone Ranger is alive and eclectic within single songs like, “The Dead Isle,” one of the two tracks available from their forthcoming debut LP. The newish band sounds polished beyond their years, creating some far-out, mind-bending jams. Also joining in on the ruckus is Le Yikes Surf Club, the amped surf punks who bring a refreshing, upbeat, West Coast sound to the endless winter of the east. The most recent release from the boys is their acoustic tinged, Yikes (Country Club), (Get it?) but these guys will most definitely be bringing their amps to this show. Extra points for having a song called “GHOST RIDE THE WHIP.” Both the bands are opening for Burger Record’s Cosmonauts, and Black Sea tonight at Kung Fu Necktie. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St, 8PM, $5 21+ – Ethan Detry
