The Shakes & The Tough Shits Opening for The Coathangers at KFN June 1

Posted on:

Start your weekend off right with some garage rock – Philly style with The Shakes and The Tough Shits, who will be opening for all girl group ATL rockers The Coathangers at Kung Fu Necktie tonight. The Shakes will be kicking the evening off with their soulful brand of sing-along garage punk. Back in March, the four-piece dropped their latest 7-inch featuring the keyboard-laden party jam “Full House (Come Over)” and their love song(?) “No One Likes My Baby.” Next up will be the Pabst-soaked drunken harmonies of The Tough Shits. The group is infamous for their extremely catchy anthems of debauchery like “Heard She Kisses on The Mouth” and “Born Drunk.” It’s Friday, and you ain’t got shot to do. Come test out your livers tonight! Kung Fu Necktie, 1201 N. Front St., $10, 7:30pm, 21+ – Dan Brightcliffe

Tonight at the Mercy Lounge, the lineup is stacked high with Tennessee talent, featuring set lists from Eastern Block, The Gills, The Future, and Josh Foster. For some inexplicable reason, this show is free of charge, which makes it very easy to come out and show your support for some of your local talent. The show starts at 9 pm "sharp," which could also mean "9:30… ish" on a venue’s watch, but show up early just in case.

More Rock from NYC: Element plays Trash Bar on June 22

Posted on:

Gritty NYC trio Element demonstrate what a well-oiled rock ‘n roll machine should sound like as audible on the group’s four-track sojourn "SOUNDTRACK TO THE END OF THE WORLD." Meshing a freewheeling hard rock bravado with a potpourri of pop-rock sensibilities, Element’s winning songwriting showcases an aptitude for creating grandiose atmospheres that never lose a pounding backbeat (“Tin Man”) as well as wealth of left of center heaviness straight out of Dave Grohl’s playbook (“Beautiful”). Bolstered by a rash of massive hooks with luxurious harmonies akin to King’s X meeting Muse, Element’s attentive musicianship and versatile rock chops allow their songs to span the rock continuum with an exhilarating sense of swagger where hitting the repeat button constantly is encouraged. See them live at Trash Bar on June 22. -Mike SOS

Zoe Sundra plays New Music Seminar night at Cake Shop on 06.19

Posted on:

Zoe Sundra, an artist hailing directly from Natalie Merchant’s school of wistful storytelling, takes a playful look at some of romance’s endless games in her sophomore record, ‘The Hunt.’

In her quieter moments, like the forceful ballad ‘Born to Please’ and the genealogical reveal of ‘Force of Love,’ Zoe reveals a country tinge to her contralto that puts her enormous range on display. But she’s at her strongest in larger anthems like album opener ‘Scarlett,’ where Sundra pours her heart out on top of brassy fanfare and glissando winds unafraid to fly the piece up to the heavens. See her when she plays the New Music Seminar show at Cake Shop on June 19 on May 27th. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets) – Zoe Sundra submitted her music for review to The Deli here.

Vinyl Alert! In A Cloud II: New Sounds From San Francisco

Posted on:

The Bay Area’s Secret Seven Records vinyl label (whoa, I just typed that in 2012) are releasing a who’s-who of the Bay Area compilation featuring unreleased tracks from Ty Segall, Vetiver and Sonny & The Sonsets, among others.

The record, titled In A Cloud II: New Sounds From San Francisco LP, is a follow up to – you guessed it – In A Cloud (Vol. I). After taking a listen to the A and B sides of this collection, if you’re a vinyl type of guy or gal you’ll want to get your hands on one of the 650 copies that will be pressed.

The album is pretty diverse, spanning the likes of lo-fi haze rock (“People Like Us” by Tim Cohen of Fresh & Onlys) to garage surf rock (“Gotta Get Back” by Chuck Prohet) to my personal favorite, girl group swooning (“Octopus Via Satellite” by Hanna Lew of Grass Widow) which you can take a listen to below.

In A Cloud II: New Sounds From San Francisco LP comes out July 17th and you can preorder the record here.

On June 26th, Vapor Records will release Hero’s Dose, the sophomore album from the Los Angeles bred quartet. The album was produced by Niko Bolas and recorded at the legendary Sunset Sound. Following the release of their debut Would Work in 2010, the young band headed out on a whirlwind tour of the US, including stops at Bonnaroo, Wakarusa and Dave Matthew’s Caravan as well as a late night TV appearance on Conan. It also coincided with many of its members’ 21st birthdays, marking a coming of age moment both personally and artistically. Hero’s Dose has the band taking a more mature new direction and adding new sonic textures. The band will be on tour throughout the summer, including a show on Satellite on June 26th.
