Civil War inspired Americana: Jus Post Bellum live at The Living Room, 06.21

Posted on:

In its records inspired by the American Civil War, Jus Post Bellum has an old time feel accented by melancholy and refinement. Minnesota native Geoffrey Wilson heads the band, crooning with lyrics about Stonewall Jackson and the judgment of God. Jus Post Bellum, which is Latin for “justice after war,” could be described as the Historical Fiction version of Fleet Foxes or Southeast Engine, coming alive with the rich, country-tinged harmonies of Wilson and bandmate Hannah Jensen, a fellow Minnesotan. The Brooklyn-based group released “Devil Winter” in April, and we be appearing at The Living Room on June 21. – Devon Antonetti, photo by CJ Richter

The Bailey Hounds Trespass on Hallowed Ground at Laurel Hill Cemetery June 2

Posted on:

If you enjoy attending concerts in unusual places like the rest of our staff, then I’d like to suggest for you to attend The Bailey Hounds performing at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Yes, a cemetery – you are reading correctly. The alt folk four-piece will be trespassing on hallowed ground dating back to the mid-1800s to bring you songs from their LP Along the Gallows as well as some new tunes and covers, and all this will be happening at sundown. Does this sound creepily fun to you? Yeah, me too! It’s also BYOB, and don’t forget your beach blankets and chairs. Laurel Hill Cemetery, 3822 Ridge Ave., 8pm, $10 (BYOB), All Ages – Alexis V.

Weird Hot Album Release Party at JB’s June 2

Posted on:

Weird Hot will be celebrating their album release party tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. The group was started by songwriter/producer Shawn Kilroy in 2011 after a string of solo releases in an effort to be able to replicate the layers of his previous works in a live setting. The new album is entitled Million Dollar Movie, and is the second LP by the group. On their latest effort, you’ll find Kilroy giving the band a little more creative freedom in the studio, as well as experimenting with influences from 70’s film scores, creating an eclectic mix of sounds pulling from genres like art rock, psychedelic folk, goth and even funk to get the crowd moving this evening. Come out and get weird! Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave, $10, 8 p.m., 21+ – Dan Brightcliffe

Live Preview: Tim Cohen at Wood Shoppe on Tuesday

Posted on:

The Fresh and Onlys frontman, Tim Cohen, headlines Wood Shoppe SF on Tuesday, June 5. This free event the first Tuesday of each month at Brick and Morter is a great way to discover local and touring artists.

Cohen will embark on a brief solo tour before hitting the road for his new side project Magic Trick whose album Ruler of the Night is out June 12. Listen to the first single, "Invisible at Midnight" over at Spin. Cohen’s battered voice sings about mortality, mishaps, and misfortune over gloomy psychedelic-folk tunes. If you like Male Bonding, Thee Oh Sees, and Woods, do not miss Cohen on Tuesday night.

Weekly Feature: Widowspeak, “I guess you’re just not that into us”

Posted on:

Man, these aloof Widowspeak hipster guys are making us GREEN! We love their music but they wouldn’t play our shows (or even make a Facebook post about our coverage) to save their own lives. We must have tried to dat… ahem, book them half a dozen times by now and we are afraid it ain’t gonna happen at this point… Their record came out about a year ago – cool beijey cover, mellow sounds, a beauty – but we met them way before then. It was The Deli NYC’s Album of the Month in August 2011, and it still finds its way into our ears. The guys also placed 3rd in our latest Best of NYC Emerging Artists Poll, but they never really seemed to care much about this stuff… But wait! Fashion magazine "Interview" interviewed them the other day! They wrote a post on Facebook about it! Same thing with Noisevox, Wow Magazine, Vice Germany… what the heck Widowspeak?! You flirt with huge publications owned by even bigger corporations behind our back? INDIGNATION! BETRAYAL OF BROOKLYN DIY ETHICS! – Or maybe just jealousy of a small, unloved (but cute) local rag…
P.S.You were on the cover of our latest issue, did you even notice? – Read Ed Guardaro’s feature on Widowspeak here.

Weekend Warrior, June 1 – 3

Posted on:

The Roots Picnic comes to the Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing this weekend, and the annual event (now in its 5th year) will bring its usual blend of hip hop and indie/electronic acts. The Roots will be earning their money this Saturday and Sunday when they headline both nights along with backing legendary rappers De La Soul and the man with a master plan Rakim. Both days will feature indie darlings like St. Vincent, tUnE-yArDs, James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem), and Diplo. And plenty of more national/international and local acts will be occupying both stages (just check out the rest of the list HERE). Most of our staff will be there so hopefully you will be too. It’ll also be beautiful weather for a picnic so we hope to see you sooner than later. Cheers! Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing, Columbus Blvd. and Spring Garden St., 12pm (Saturday) & 5pm (Sunday), $50-$80, All Ages – Bill McThrill

Weekly Feature: Illumntr

Posted on:

Illuminator recently dropped some vowels because there were other bands out there with a similar name. It’s almost certain, however, that these bands sound nothing like Illumntr. In fact, it’s arguable that most bands sound nothing like Illumntr, for they exist, mentally and audibly, on a different planet. Like a tripped out sonic loom, their combination of sounds and ideas produce a multicolored patchwork. Vocals weave in and out, mingling with echoes, bells, and jangles, timpani and synths. These are not songs with hooks, meant to be easily digested and spat back out. Instead they are carefully constructed suites, pieces melding into one another with orchestral grace. – Read Alison Levin’s interview with the band here.

Dream Pop duo The Mast releases new Single + Video

Posted on:

NYC Thee Mast recently released the new single "UpUpUp" which showcases a partial switch in the band’s sound: Haale Gafori dreamy guitar parts have completely disappeared from this track, replaced by buzzy synths lines, which gently integrate with her ethereal vocals and Matt Kilmer’s signature inventive drum style. The duo has enrolled LA professional dancer Pandora Marie for the shooting of the single’s video, streaming below.

Hop Along Record Release Show at FUC June 1

Posted on:

Hop Along are celebrating the release of their album Get Disowned (which you can read about in our review HERE) at First Unitarian tonight, along with Little Big League, Mary Lattimore and Bandname. On the continuum of bands who specialize in the soft-loud dichotomy, Hop Along  – fresh off the set of their debut music video for “Tibetan Pop Stars” (below) –  is winning a good amount of Philly’s attention. They come at it by way of Frances Quinlan’s gossamer vocals, paired with punk and pop-folk campfire sounds, setting an achingly introspective mood that stays behind even when the band careens between tiptoeing, unhurried interludes and angular outbursts. Their supporting acts are a collage of both the art-punk and delicate folk ends of Hop Along’s spectrum. Bandname bring the good times with Philly garage rock and roll. Little Big League contain ex and present members of Strand of Oak, Post Post and Titus Andronicus. And Mary Lattimore gives you the chance to see punk and classical harp all in one set.
