Young Gliss Drops It at the M Room May 28

Posted on:

With his lyrical word play and ear-catching hooks, Young Gliss is helping usher in a new generation of Philly hip hop. The young emcee, whose musical bloodline runs deep (his cousins are ?uestlove and Lee Andrews of legendary Philly doo-wop group Lee Andrews & the Hearts) describes his style as a four-way cross between Jay-Z, Lupe Fiasco, T.I., and Wiz Khalifa. You can hear for yourself tonight at the M Room where Young Gliss will perform in support of his latest mixtape, Dealing With The Pressure 2, the long awaited follow-up to his debut mixtape that dropped last year. Featuring appearances from Philly emcees Dice Raw and Truck North from the Money Making Jam Boys crew, Dealing With The Pressure 2 has received much praise throughout the hip-hop blogging community, and is available for free download HERE. Also on the bill for tonight’s gig are Minneapolis-based alt-hip hop chief Witness, New York-based indie hip hop duo Divine Rhyme, and Boston-based rapper LTC. So drop what you’re doing and check it out. The M Room, 15 W. Girard Ave., $8, 7pm, 21+ – Dan Brightcliffe

Live Review & Weekend Pick: The Frail

Posted on:

The Frail stirred up a raucous dance party at the Zazzle Bay to Breakers After Party at Public Works, and this Saturday, May 28, the indie-electro-pop outfit headlines a night of music and fashion at Red Devil Lounge. No guarantee a disco turtle will make an appearance.

From a humble Craigslist collaboration to appearing on MTV, vocalist Daniel Lannon and producer Kevin Durr have carried the band for four years strong through to its recently released EP, Lasers Over Lovers.

If you miss the fun this weekend, The Frail and Altars will support MOTHER MOTHER on Sunday, June 12 at Rickshaw Stop.

Night of The Living Cover Bands II: Electric Boogaloo

Posted on:

WOW the brains behind Southern Girls Rock’n’Roll Camp sure come up with some great ideas for fundraising! Tonight will put their most recent scheme to the test, in the form of a second round of their successful benefit series, "Night of the Living Cover Bands II: Electric Boogaloo." Sounds creepy. Don’t be scared though–the bands playing are great, including Powerbrrrd, Bad Cop, Heavy Cream, Take the Power Back, Gentleman Divers, Apollo Up!, Ascent of Everest, Protomen, Kelly Kerr & The Distractions, H.P. Witchcraft, Skybox, and Those Darlins.

They’ll be covering some beloved 90’s material by Fugazi, Radiohead, Weezer, Sleater-Kinney, The Replacements, Guided By Voices, and They Might Be Giants. (I hope somebody plays Particle Man)! With all that variety, it’s totally worth driving to Murfreesboro to see such a spectacle, even at $3.85 per gallon! Check out the facebook event for additional details, and then toss on a pair of Jnco jeans, tighten your scrunchy, and then head on out to Murfreesboro to see a great show for an awesome cause!–Erin Manning

Dom Announce “Family of Love” EP, out August 9 on Astralwerks.

Posted on:

dom

Ever since he went from selling low budget beats out of a Worcester bedroom to pursuing his own twisted version of pop music, Dom has made one thing clear: his undying desire to deliver heaven-sent harmonies and hooks that are heavier than—and about as colorful as—his pink paisley guitar.

Nothing’s changed now that he’s finally ready to release EP2, Family of Love, out August 9, on Astralwerks. This time around, Dom used a proper studio session with producer Nicolas Vernhes (Animal Collective, Deerhunter, Björk).

With a third EP also in the works for later in the year, Dom is doing what he does best: delivering filler-free pop tunes that are catchy as hell.

Tracklisting:
Telephone
Family of Love
Damn
Happy Birthday
Some Boys

Tour Dates:
6/16 Boston MA, WFNX Clam Bake
6/17 Brooklyn NY, Northside Festival / Brooklyn Bowl
8/5-8/7 Chicago IL, Lollapalooza
8/12 Bangor ME, KahBANG Festival
8/26-27 St. Louis, MO LOUfest

Below is an acoustic version of Burn Bridges, a track off last year’s EP, Sun Bronzed Greek Gods.

B.E.A.F. Alt Rock Stage with The yes Way, Taurus, Shake The Baron, Submarine Bells, Young Things and Pillow Theory

Posted on:

Although it is deemed as one “category,” tonight’s Deli B.E.A.F 2011 Alternative Rock Stage envelops a multitude of styles and tastes, representing the ever changing and progressive nature of the New York music scene. Here’s a closer look at the bands playing on May 27 at Spike Hill:

11.45 – THE YES WAY

Taking a path less common than most rock bands, The yes Way incorporate in their admirable track list different sonic elements – guitar riffs blended with smooth harmonies, heavy instrumentation carried by emotional vocals.

11.00 – TAURUS

IN Taurus’ music, harmonious and eerie melodies meld with psychedelic vibes and darker undertones on their upcoming EP, “Cannon Falls Forever.” Unexpected twists on swelling modulations keep the ear guessing on “Born a Lion;” hypnotic guitar strums and smooth vocals come together on the peaceful “Love Would Bury You;” and, a gentle introduction on “Carolina” transforms into a swirl of reverb and distortion. (MB)

10.15 – SHAKE THE BARON

Catchy, unassuming and emotional (not in an "emo" way), Shake The Baron’s pop rock is as good as it gets. This band has noteworthy songwriting chops – check out the embedded song "Tree House" – and a rather placid attitude: even though most of their songs are quite upbeat, they kind of sound like mid tempos, because the band rocks without "losing it", allowing guitarist/vocalist Andrew Oedel’s smooth tenor space to shine.

9.30 – SUBMARINE BELLS

Reverberating guitars and echoing, lax vocals melt together into Submarine Bells’ signature sound of silky melodies floating over crashing drums, embellished by flickering percussion. Vaguely reminiscent of Walkmen’s Hamilton Leithhause, Owen McCarthy’s vocals are so intense it seems they are carrying the weight of the world. (MB)

8.45 – THE YOUNG THINGS

Sounding like the early Beatles’ evil cousins, The Young Things’s music is likely to give your lazy NYC ass a good, deserved shake. Maybe their secret is that their music is obviously inspired byo the classic party songs of the 60s, from "It’s Been a Hard Day’s Night" to "La Bamba" – i.e. the sound track of most teenagers’ parties, or – at least – of the ones who have the word "hipster" branded in their destiny.

8.00 – PILLOW THEORY

There is nothing sleepy about pILLOW tHEORY ( a band that last year opened for Living Colour in Central Park). The NYC quartet’s current and second release, “Outpatience” showcases hints of jazz intertwined with the aggressiveness of metal, drive of punk, the smoothness of soul, and the energetic appeal of pop, delivering dynamic variety and unexpected twists on New York’s typical rock outfit. Weekend Warrior, May 27-29

When we heard about the First Annual Sundrop Music & Arts Festival at the Fire this weekend, we were definitely intrigued by the amount of support it’s giving to local artists. Kicking off tonight, you have headliners (and Deli friends) Hezekiah Jones, who will be joined by Americana revival artistes North Lawrence Midnight Singers opening up the three-day festival. On Saturday, there’ll be a FREE show and craft fair from 3pm – 9pm that’ll have The Circadian Rhythms, Attia Taylor, The Spinning Leaves, North Lawrence Midnight Singers, Paper Masques, Spirit and Dust, and Ron Gallo of Toy Soldiers (who are playing Saturday night) taking the two outdoor stages located in front of the Fire and Trios Tratorria while fine art, crafts and food vendors hawk their stuff. Paper Masques returns Saturday night to perform along with Busses, Orbit to Leslies, and Drink Up Buttercup, who, if you haven’t heard from us by now, have officially spilt, making this their last show as DUB. And closing out the fiesta Sunday night is Arrah and the Ferns, Peasant, Former Belle, and Illinois. We here at The Deli are all about cheering on local acts. Emanuel & The Fear announce new album – CD release at mercury Lounge on July 7

Posted on:

Having spent hours laboring in the studio for their first two releases, Brooklyn’s Emanuel and the Fear took a more organic approach for the new self-released EP “Hands“, by writing and rehearsing the tracks in the two months they toured Europe in 2010. They then recorded and mixed the whole record in 4 days, mostly live in the studio with Brendan Tobin (Made Out Of Babies/Red Sparrows). “Hands” will be released on June 10th, 2011. The band, which features members who have worked with bands as diverse as The National, From Autumn to Ashes, Sufjan Stevens, Zao, Akron/Family, Ryan Star, and The Canadian Brass, will be celebrating the release of the EP on July 7, 2011 at the Mercury Lounge. – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here).
