Momma unveils new single “Work,” debut LP out 5/25

Posted on:

Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten have created a beautiful assemblage of uplifting, star gazing energy that will elevate your mind and soul into serenity. Masterminds Friedman and Weingarten together tackle both the instruments and the vocals with ease dominating the soft grunge genre. Hints of Tegan and Sara and Liz Phair flow through their newest single, “Work," layered with moody instrumentals, heavy lyrics, and undeniable talent. Momma is of the first magnitude – their depth and experience as young women hold a great impact on the sound they create.

Momma’s forthcoming album, Interloper, is available on May 25 via Danger Collective. Follow the duo on Instagram and Facebook for updates on a future tour. Kayla Hay

Cloud Becomes Your Hand is back at Alphaville on 06.09 within the Northside Fest

Posted on:

Demanding NYC indie rock fans who are struggling to find original, fun, and entertaining new bands should go check out Cloud Becomes Your Hand when they play live at Alphaville on Juse 9th, within the Northside Festival. The avant-post-punk (!?) collective was on the cover of our 47th issue of The Deli, and for a reason: their debut album "Rest in Fleas" was the most refreshingly fun thing we happened to listen that year, in particular single "Hermit," streaming below ("Sand of Sea" and "Bridge of Ignoramus" are pretty darn awesome too). Their live show is some kind of perfectly excuted experimental theatrical production that’s tightly paced without ever falling in the traps of self-indulgence. Do not miss!

Weekend Warrior, May 18 – 20

A mysterious psych/surf sonic structure sweeps through when breathing in the music of Sixteen Jackies. Serenading in relaxed, sand-in-your-toes melodies that rhythmically breeze by but hint at an underlying stormy volatility, there’s a cautious, haunting element that lays in wait, stirring up the atmosphere in funky, possessive, art-rock/pop grooves. Incorporating the serene with the slightly strange and cutting through the mist with moments that set you in motion, the glam quartet hovers the threshold between calm and combustible. Tonight, at PhilaMOCA, Sixteen Jackies will be celebrating the release of their double EP 12” vinyl, Movie Was Bad Mascula, via Born Losers Records. They’ll also be joined by The Lawsuits’ offshoot Isles Isles, the tumultuous, trance-inducing fun of Madalean Gauze, and the hazy, splintering get down of Long Hots. – Michael Colavita

Heather Styka Releases North

Posted on:

Heather Styka released her new album, North, today. This album is a journey in itself, being recorded last summer in a cabin in Wisconsin with the Denmark band The Sentimentals. Heather documented this process in the video below. The album is filled with folk, pop, and Americana, but most importantly wonderful storytelling. Heather’s lyrics are filled with stories of personal and political change.

You can help Heather celebrate her new album on June 2nd at Martyrs with Jess Robbins (also releasing a new album!).

New Quiet Slang/Beach Slang Album Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

Everything Matters But No One Is Listening is the new album from Quiet Slang, which is out now via Polyvinyl Records. Strings and piano reshape the instrumental environment of these Beach Slang songs. Rather than rearing back and roaring, these takes sit back – still exhibiting poignant power but with more space and air, allowing the lyrics to gradually sink. Originally slated to perform this weekend, Quiet Slang is now scheduled to take the stage at Underground Arts on Saturday, July 14, supported by Abi Reimold.

New Track: “Key & Bone” (revisited) – Heavy Temple

Posted on:

Originally featured on Chassit, the power trio of Heavy Temple recently shared an augmented version of “Key & Bone” (featuring Thunderhorse). While its previous incarnation orchestrated an eerie cathedral of sound, the fresher take wastes little time, throwing you directly into the pressure cooker. Oozing a fuzzy hypnosis, the band proceeds to shred and stampede in tight, explosive, instrumental pockets.

Pronoun unveils new singles + plays Brooklyn Bazaar on 05.26

Posted on:

Since 2016, Brooklyn artist pronoun, the brainchild of songwriter Alyse Vellturo, is on a catchy single roll: her debut EP "There’s No One New Around You" exposed a talent able to forge memorable yet intimate pop songs dealing with troubled personal feelings, in the tradition of The Magnetic Fields. In 2018 the project has already released two singles, "Run" (streaming below) and "Wrong," which was recently included in Stereogum’s "Best 5 Songs of the Week." Alyse will be performing live with band at Brooklyn Bazar on May 26.
