Burbank “always”

Posted on:

Young Beat Maker Burbank (aka Daniel Burbank) released a new EP, “always”, today (6/1). Burbank’s beats are heavily jazz influenced, downtempo, and LoFi. He is involved with The Cozy Collective, Most Qualified Collective, and Chapel Hill’s Grape Records. "always" is strikingly beautiful album filled with chopped-up horns, heavy but relaxed beats, and an array found sounds.

Amy León brings her individual poetic style to Baby’s All Right 06.05

Posted on:

NYC singer Amy León offers a unique and powerful blend of spoken word and soul, through a delivery that fuses singing and poetry. She tackles social inequality and celebrates blackness in her most poignant track, “Burning in Birmingham,” which starts as a soul ballad and turns to spoken word: “Didn’t I die for them? / Didn’t we do this already? / Who let Jim back in the White House?” Her voice is soothing, her lyrics stop-you-in-your-tracks striking, and her music builds to a point where it sounds as if it might burst. The way she reaches a chaotic, bustling climax in both “Burning in Birmingham” and “Child of the Sun” seems to express some sort of catharsis for León, a form of healing through art. Don’t miss the chance to see her unique style on June 5th at Baby’s All Right. -Lily Crandall

New Track: “Last I Heard” – Shinobi

Posted on:

“Last I Heard” is the standout track off Shinobi‘s new EP The World Is Mine. A mixture of riff and rhythm serve as the single’s fire-starter. Lyrically, the song appears directed at someone specific that fell off a personal grid or out of a social circle. Its snarly vocals capture a heady aggression, as electric guitars shred through its center with cantankerous fury. Lost connections can still sting.

Cherry Blaster – New Tune “Demo Reel” Soaked in Synth!

Posted on:

Cherry Blaster rolls on with a new tune just released titled “Demo Reel”. The track opens with deep synth and a carnival-like keyboard floating over top. There are some deeper thoughts in the lyrics though as she explains:

I’ve never been particularly good at taking initiative in social situations, and this has often allowed me to retreat behind walls of self-protection. Demo Reel paints a picture of what I initially feel from this vantage point”.

Get Angry, Stay Pissed with B.R.U.C.E.

Posted on:

Femme punk band B.R.U.C.E.’s first album Stay Pissed was just released. B.R.U.C.E. is comprised of Anna Janelle, Ryan Vail, David Thomas, and Gwen Shrieks. Together, they make music that is feral and blunt, exploring the ridiculous hypocrisy of the world. Each song on Stay Pissed is notable, but the two that really shine are “Succubus” and Tried.” Janelle’s vocals on “Succubus” are raw and angry, reminiscent of a huskier Kathleen Hanna. “Tried” alternates between a slower, more sultry pace, and jarring, crashing noise. It’s an excellent example of building and releasing an audience’s anticipation and letting the movement of the music turn into frenzied chaos. Next time you need to punch someone (like a Nazi) in the face, listen to B.R.U.C.E to pump yourself up beforehand.

B.R.U.C.E. will be playing at the Lombard Pub on June 9th, along with ISCH, Dead Coyote, and Jeff Smith. – By Avril Carrillo, Photo by Corbin Corbiin

Record of the Month: Forth Wanderers – Self-titled

Posted on:

Forth Wanderers‘ new self-titled album, their Sub Pop debut, is symphonic and rollicking. The band’s songwriting duo – Ben Guterl on guitar and Ava Trilling penning lyrics – are perpetually in sync, despite often writing at a physical distance. The five-piece band’s members are rarely in the same place at once (they’re all college students in Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Ohio, respectively). Despite this, their chemistry and synchronization as a band is abundantly evident on this release. "Forth Wanderers" is a triumph, bursting with angst and dissonance while maintaining an innate pop appeal. This album has something for just about everyone who has an ear for good songs – it’s bright and jangly at times, distorted and gnashing at others, and it always has something to say. New C0mputer Album Available for Streaming & Download

A brutal buzzsaw of honest, societal evaluation hits squarely on Consequences Of Mass Production Under The Entertainment Regime (Infinite Weed Records), the latest release from C0mputer. Balancing a primal roar with incisive, pertinently-crafted lyricism, aimed at both the big picture and the individual level, there’s a doubling down on heaviness as the muscular force of the music matches the power of its messages. You can’t hide from the weighty impact of reality.

The New Respects share rockin’ new fight song and video “Freedom”

Posted on:

Nashville’s New Respects are making some noise these days- and also throwing paint at an old, beat-up car before driving it around a muddy stadium. The guitar hooks in their new song and music video "Freedom" are bold, perfectly executed and juicy. "I get down to the sound of freedom," sings vocalist Jasmine Mullen, and you can hear that battle cry in the intensity and fearlessness of her delivery. We’d take a ride with the New Respects any day- by the looks of this video, it’d be a great road trip. are touring from June through October. –Geena Kloeppel

New Major Pursuit Album Available for Streaming & Purchase

With Feeling, the new album from Major Pursuit, is now available via Utica Records. Singer-songwriter Olivia Bellito’s self-inspection hovers between a gentle drift and a combustible energy that ripples over. Inviting one into the thoughts, which circle around her mind, draped in melody, these songs sway with sincerity that momentously erupts at peak points. You can further examine these insights into Bellito’s world at Major Pursuit’s record release show this Saturday, June 2 at JJ’s Diner, with Sinceres and Highnoon. (Photo by Ashley Gellman)
