New Music, Emerging from your Local Scene
Brooklyn’s Cruel Black Dove mash shoegazer, goth and industrial influences into a personal, sultry indie rock sound. The band – around since 2007 – will release their sophomore EP "The Myth and the Sum" with a show at Mercury on 01.14. Beginning in 2010, the band is planning more dates nationally and internationally in support of the release.
Boy Genius will release a new version of their single "Blame Love" (featured in the upcoming new album "Staggering") on January 26, 2010, via Greenpop Recordings – you can preview it here. Brooklyn Vegan said about their music: "Boy Genius are definitely within the indiepop realm but not too sugary, not too precious, relying on well-crafted melodies and gentle, mostly-acoustic instrumentation to carry the songs…Boy Genius deserve more attention than they’ve gotten, hopefully that will come soon." Boy Genius also announced dates for a Eest Coast tour mostly happening between the end of January and the Beginning of February. You can catch them live at Fort Useless in Brooklyn on 01.09.
Chicago’s Tall Corn Music is releasing the latest effort from Brad Loving (aka Lobisomen) this February. As Lobisomen, Brad is free to explore the depths of electronic music. Combining influences as diverse African, South American, and Jamaican music with elements for hip hop and jazz, his new ep Brightest Solids is near global effort. It’s not surprising given his extended stays in Brazil, France, Japan, and Mali. However, when you listen closely you can hear heavy elements of thriving local improvisational music scene. Tall Corn is giving us a sneak peak at the ep which is scheduled for release on Feb. 23. Here is “Plasma Is For Lovers” (mp3).

Strangely enough, this video plays more like a dim preview inside the souls of one of our favorite ambient outfits. It’s all sorts of intriguing, from the director’s manipulation of time to the group’s apparent desire to stay hidden behind their freshened up exteriors. Mission accomplished in the enigmatic department, Warpaint. Mission accomplished.

Local Natives played a sorta-farewell set to a sold out crowd at the Echo just before Christmas Day, sharing their bill with Chief and Voxhaul Broadcast as openers. It would be Local Natives’ final home show until they return to Europe in March. Their debut album, Gorilla Manor (nickname of their home/rehearsal spot/party dungeon) was released November 2 in the UK (Infectious Records) and won’t be available in these states until February 16 (Frenchkiss Records). The band had a few copies available for purchase along with a Christmas gift to the sold out crowd: a poster bill specially made for this night’s event. Show closer "Sun Hands" ended in true Local Natives fashion: by inviting the bands they’ve toured with on stage including Johnny Wilson (The Union Line) and Stewart Cole (Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes). -Courtney Coles
Seeing Daytrotter post their new session with Headlights today reminded me that I had not shared their video for “Love Song For Buddy”. This animated gem was directed and Illustrated by Scott Marvel, and beautifully captures this gentle effort from the normally upbeat Southern Illinois band. The song appears on the band’s second album, Wildlife, which was released by Polyvinyl back in October. Headlights also announced tonight their spring tour with David Bazan that will bring them to DeKalb’s House Café on April 3rd.
Here at The Deli we start the new year with the much anticipated results of our Open Contest linked to our Year End Best of New England 2009 Poll for emerging artists.
For the unaware, this Open Contest is the part of our Year End Poll which nominates artists through an open submission system – while the majority of the finalists for the Year End Best of Poll are freely selected by a jury of local bloggers, promoters and scenemakers.

When the album is released it will be a vinyl only release (Jan. 26th, Sophomore Lounge), but I still feel compelled to mention what my verision of this album looks like. A few weeks ago I was going through my mail and opened a package from State Champion. I looked inside and there was the spine of Michael Jordan’s I Can’t Accept Not Trying. Now it was close to Christmas, but why me and why Jordan’s tiny collection of thoughts? I pulled it out and found the guts of the book had been removed and in its place was a promo copy of Stale Champagne the new album from State Champion.
The album itself is almost as exciting as it’s unique packaging. A blend of southern twang, calculated Chicago rock, and a heavy dose of violin magic makes for an exciting and surprisingly warm album. It’s a lo-fi, heartfelt, and endearingly passionate garage-country. This, the bands debut album, proves that something original and unique can be built on a foundation of traditional ad known. Ryan Davis provides a steady swagger that could propel this band to bigger things in the year ahead.
Stale Champagne will be released on Jan. 26th, but you can celebrated the release on the 20th at Empty Bottle with Rabble Rabble, Phantom Family Halo, and Wishgift.
First, thanks to everyone who entered our open contest to be included in our year-end poll. The response was overwhelming and all of The Deli’s writers were involved in narrowing the field down to arrive at three bands that will be included in the year-end poll.
