Da Comrade! Ist An Tritone Jan. 9

Posted on:

It is still kind of sad to see the house show spot Chernobyl no longer hosting events. But ever since Da Comrade! moved on from their venue/home, they’ve continued to blow it up like the disaster that it was named for! The War From Your Living Room was another favorite release of mine last year. Everything from the recording to the design of the album cover was a full blown group effort by the band and their Chernobyl Collective. Catching their live performance usually adds up to seeing them painted up and doing something quite unexpected on top of their incendiary music. That’s why catching them at Tritone tonight might just have to be your prerogative. They’ll be joined by Tongue Sculptors whose music seems to echo everything from lo-fi garage to Tom Waits. Tritone, 1508 South St., 9pm, $5, 21+ myscape.com/dacomradeBill McThrill

Globes on Remote’s campy video for “Space Camp”

Posted on:

Globes on Remote | "Space Camp"
Dir. by Bridger Nielson

Indie-pop quartet Globes on Remote turned Deli heads a few months ago with their brand of super-happy-fun-time dance tunes, and turned heads they’ve done again. Their video for "Space Camp" is a visual orgy of colors and smiles and dancing and photographic whimsy, all representative of one of our favorite breaking acts. Is it too early to call favorite video of 2010? Yes? Then prove us wrong and send some video goodness to hugo [at] thedelimagazine [dot] com.

CD of The Month: All Things Lucid

Posted on:

Although All Things Lucid has been putting out music since 2005, their latest album marks their first self-titled release. All Things Lucid keeps in true following with the band’s sound and style but ups the ante with a little something new. This was my first All Things Lucid album, so many of my observations may not be new or fresh from previous reviewers. A first listening experience can either make you embrace a band or disown them, and All Things Lucid was by far the former.

The band’s increasing fluency in sound captures you right away. Lead singer Miles Benjamin has one of the more unique voices in the Chicago area. It’s not smooth but it’s not caustic, not soft but not gritty. It’s not nasally, guttural, or throaty. It has it’s own category of timbre and quality that is rarely found but greatly liked. Benjamin’s voice on "Take it Easy Joe" and "The Lesson Learned" leads you in like a barker at a carnival into a song that will "astound the senses" or "boggle the mind." All Things Lucid has a certain bluesy quality mixed with good ol’ fashion rock and roll – none of that fake pop crap you hear on the radio that tries to pass as such – and Benjamin’s voice weaves easily between the band as well as the addition horn and string parts.

The recording quality is also fantastic and adds a lot to the band’s finished product. Since All Things Lucid is meant to be purchased on vinyl, each track has a warm sound with more definition than a digital release or CD could offer. Even just listening to it on your iPod you can get a true sense for the direction that All Things Lucid wanted to go with their sound. It’s rare to find a band that doesn’t want to slap a glossy coat of high-end production on their album with no regard for how it’ll affect their final product and call it a day. You can hear the extra effort All Things Lucid put into their album, and it makes a hell of a difference. A great album to kick of the New Year for Chicago music. – Amy Dittmeier

The Alternates play pre-Grammy networking event ‘disclosed to the public’

Posted on:

If you’re in the mood for some white-collar schmoozing among music industry folks, then later this month you’re in luck. The Moodtyme Events company’s pre-Grammy mixer comes with a set by indie locals The Alternates and though it’s "disclosed to the public" we found a link where you can buy your way in for twenty bucks. In the off-chance a good connection can’t be made with these uber-powerful industry people, you’ll at least go home with an excellent set by a group we’ve had our ears on since this site began three years ago. Artistic consolation: check.

Dead Meadow premiere video/film preview for major Xemu project

Posted on:

Dead Meadow | "That Old Temple"
Dir. by Artificial Army

We know who Dead Meadow are: a three-piece psych rock group with the itch to tastefully jam between verses and choruses, all without ever making listeners bore in the indulgence. What we don’t know is what film project this music video is a preview for. According to a release, Dead Meadow are part of a "multi-media project to surface later this year on Xemu." Xemu, of course, being Dead Meadow’s label and apparent web hub for this hyped film project by Artificial Army (whose work includes The Mars Volta, The Sword, and Coheed and Cambria). The video itself is hallucinating, and until more information comes out on this alleged multimedia project, we’ll just let it stand on its own.

Best of ’09 Poll Update: Hold tight!

Posted on:

As you already know, The Deli runs in several major cities across the country, and when the Best Of poll comes around, this means mega, mega, mega traffic. While we love the attention (we really do) this often goes hand-in-hand with severe congestion and traffic outages which result in delays and balding. So just hold tight, Angelenos — we’ll let the rest of our sister sites go ahead of us until it’s our turn. If there’s anything we know how to do, it’s wait in traffic, amiright!? In the meantime, keep checking in for regular posting. Rock!

The Organ Beats @ Middle East Upstairs 1/9 (w/ Luxury, Conservitive Man and This Blue Heaven)

The Organ Beats – Sleep When We Are Dead from Ben Fee on Vimeo.

The Organ Beats play the Middle East Upstairs Saturday, 1/9. Part of show (guaranteed to make you forget it’s the middle of January and you live in New England) featuring Conservative Man‘s EP release. Indie-pop The Luxury and This Blue Heaven are also supporting. All the bands have 80’s rock undertones, which is good because I mean like Pixies/New Order 80’s with a 20-teens (I can’t think of a better term for this decade) energy. See you there?

In the meantime check out this interview the Deli’s Michael Spencer did with The Organ Beats. They are also up for Artist of the Year. Vote if you love them the most!

Autopilot is for Lovers Tonight at The Woods! Funeral Parlors and Banjos!

Posted on:

Autopilot is for Lovers is one of those rare Portland combinations of intimate musicianship and sincere urgency…actually backed up by talent. Anchored by multi-instrumentalist Paul Seely (formerly of The Builders and the Butchers, now also guitarist in Dr. Helicopter), Autopilot maintains a choral arc over their indie-rock kitsch. This isn’t a dig on them – they have simply nailed all corners of folk, orchestral-pop, gloomy rock, and railway blues into one cohesive presentation. The effect is eerie and fresh, as is evidenced on their debut album To the Wolves, released last spring.

Vocalist Adrian Hatkin (also Seely’s fiancee) weaves warbly melodies throughout tracks like "Pessimist," like a New Age Stevie Nicks with a newfound love of accordions. The result from the spiraling din of instrumentation, melodies plucked from the Maker, and the combined efforts of cellist Jessie Dettwiller, violinist Emily Nelson, and bassist Sterling Myles, is engaging, if not inspiring. If you don’t believe me, go listen to "Workhorse Blues" right now. Or if you don’t trust me, would you trust NPR?

You can see for yourself tonight, when Autopilot is for Lovers takes the stage at Portland’s favorite funeral-parlor-turned-music-venue The Woods! Opening the show will be former Deli Portland band of the month winners Porches, who’ve been skippin’ up an Americana whirlwind all over town as of late, showcasing the floppy mane of guitarist/bad dude Keenan Cloud, vocalist/guitarist Ryan Olson, saw(ist?) Matt Radke, and…hey what do you know! Paul Seely! Among other equally amazing band members whom I’m spacing the names of.

The whole goddamn thing is a recipe for rad. Mr. Frederick rounds out the bill. Tickets are $5 in advance, $5 at the door. Doors at 8:00 p.m., show at 9:00 p.m. 21 and over.

Two Subjects give birth to Cavemen

Posted on:

It doesn’t happen very often that a NON all star band plays its first show in a sold out Bowery Ballroom. This is the case of Cavemen, a brand new musical project born from two members of Brooklyn band The Subjects. However, we can’t really say that they sold out the Bowery, as on January 24 they are opening for Glass Ghost and White Rabbits… but still, this could be well interpreted as a sign from God! The band’s sound, reminiscent of a more psychedelic version of Bell and Sebastian or The Shins, definitely has appeal and potential. Simple song with beautiful melodies – that’s really all you need sometimes. Check out these guys’ demo here.

P.S. By the way, we have our own name for this kind of music here at The Deli: we call it "Mellow Core". Here’s a list of the Best Mellow Core Artists in NYC.

Raised in Branson, MO and Louisville, KY, Dawn Landes is a Brooklyn Resident with a playful approach to rootsy music. Her third full-length album will be available January 19 on Cooking Vinyl.
