Bladen County Records Presents a Night of Musical Fortune You Can and Should Take a Chance On

Posted on:

Bladen County Records is putting on the Spin the Wheel Showcase @ Holocene this Thursday the 21st! What does that mean? We’re glad you asked…

Here’s how it works: A member of the audience gets to come and and spin a fun and giant "Wheel of Fortune" to determine which one of the local and talented bands is to come up and play one song. The process then repeats itself, and keeps on rolling. The format lends itself toward laughing and libations – things are bound to get a little silly.

The various possibilities for performance are endless! Why not start by buying a vowel? Give me an O! You can bask in the melodically indulgent, vintage indie rock of Oh, Captain, My Captain.

Give me an H! Perhaps you then leisurely take a stroll through the weird, though beautiful and transfixing compositions of Hosannas (formerly Church).

Give me a T! Here comes a delightful ditty from indie-folk songsmiths, Typhoon.

Give me an M! Hither comes a ’50s rock ‘n’ roll/pop classic from Oh, Captain, My Captain spin off, Monarques.

Give me a P! A well-crafted garage-pop jam with addicting organ lines just may blossom through live cultivation from Patterns. The wheel will decide!

The boisterous carnival of music kicks of at 9:00 p.m. for $5.

The Deli LA is officially social media whore-tastic!

Posted on:

Have you added us on Facebook yet?  We just joined and we’re already a hit with all those crazy kids and their banal status updates about mafias and farming. Once you’re on, tell your friends to join us. We promise not to tag you in mega incriminating photos.

And if you aren’t following us yet on Twitter, what are you waiting for? We’ll tweet your face off, all in the name of giveaways and exclusive Deli LA twitter information including (but not limited to) passwords into events, presales and all that other stuff that’ll make you glad you followed us long, long ago.

If those reasons aren’t enough, then simply do it to support LA’s music community. Tons of bands have hopped on and have found really great uses through our outlets and anything that excites the music community is, frankly, good for all of us.

In the wake of the devastating Haiti earthquake, Portland musicians are banding together to raise donations for the disaster’s horrific aftermath.

On Sunday, January 24th, Holocene hosts a benefit of electronic proportions with electro-pop darlings Pyramiddd (or Starfucker to you and me), the instrumental, visual art duo Deelay Ceelay, and experimental dance outfit, Gulls. Show starts at 8:00 p.m.

On Monday, January 25th, The Woods hosts a benefit featuring the Americana sounds of The Builders and The Butchers, vast folk/gospel arrangements of Tu Fawning and indie folk songs of Nick Jaina. Show starts at 9:00 p.m.

Tickets for each show are $10, but more donations are welcome. All of the proceeds will go directly to Mercy Corps.

Dragons and Champs and Netherfriends

Posted on:

Well, all of the votes have been tallied and the results are in… The Deli Chicago is proud to announce that their emerging artist for 2009 is I Fight Dragons! They not only won the hearts of our readers, but received several voters from our jury of experts. In 2009 we saw them release their debut EP, Cool is Just a Number, create an army of fans, and rock out on retro Nintendo controls.

In second play we have the electro-dance-rockers Hey Champ who recently put out their compilation album/mixtape Winner’s Circle. They made their biggest impact this year with their remix skills.

On third place band is Netherfriends who not only released their latest EP Calling You Out this year, but constantly toured the country.

We would like to thank our sponsors, the jury, all of the bands in the poll, and of course you the reader and voter.

It isn’t lonely at Raymond Richards’ Idaho Falls

Posted on:

The Idaho Falls, collaborative-laden project of producer/engineer/songwriter Raymond Richard, is a breathing all-star act featuring local notables.  His upcoming LP The Spark tracks cameos from Angela Correa and Rob Poynter from Correatown, Brian Whelan from Broken West, Alex Silverman from Alex & Sam, Wendy Wang from The Sweet Hurt and others including longtime Idaho Falls guitarist Kevin Feyen and drummer Roger Brogan. For those seeking that classic Topanga Canyon sound, Richard isn’t too far — musical communities tend to have that effect.

Gina Ferrera & The Philadelphia Gyil Fusion Project CD Release Party at MarBar Jan. 20

Posted on:

Gina Ferrera maybe an Italian-American girl from dirty Jerz, but her heart lies somewhere in the warm climates of West Africa. She specializes in a tonal percussive instrument called a gyil – pronounced jeel – an acoustic, wooden mallet instrument in the xylophone family that originated from the tri-border region of Ghana, Burkina Faso and Cote D’Ivoire, where Ferrera traveled to learn from gyil masters Kakraba Lobi and Bernard Woma. She’s brought her knowledge and rhythms back to Philly where she’s recorded her latest album on Rope A Dope, titled Gina Ferrera & The Philadelphia Gyil Fusion Project – imagine a more organic, primal sounding Imogen Heap. Come to MarBar tonight for her CD Release Party with her all-star local lineup of special guests if you are in the mood for a little soul cleansing! Let’s Get Hypnotized – Bloc 11 – Union Sq. Somerville 1/20 TONIGHT!

Posted on:

Wednesday night, in the heart of Somerville’s Union Square, local songwriters Dan Blakeslee, Tim Riordan, and James Houlahan will be performing from 7-9 at Bloc 11 Cafe.  Dubbing themselves as “The Folk Hynoptists,” each of their sets will feature original songs covering a wide range of styles and feeling.  Blakeslee sings of late night wanderings, fascinating characters, and enduring love.  Riordan’s tunes evoke strong connections to the listener, drawing one in with detailed, powerful emotions.  Houlahan combines simple, sometimes traditional melodies with his own twist of folk magic and inventive language.  Hypnotic trances are encouraged.  Regardless, Bloc 11 is at 11 Bow Street, and they feature a variety of beverages and good eats.
