Drowners headline The Deli’s Ten Year Anniversary party #2 – Brooklyn Bazaar, 08.01 – FREE SHOW!

Posted on:

Drowners, a band that didn’t grace the cover of one of our 2013 issue just because of an unfortunate coincidence, will be headlining the second of The Deli’s Ten Year Anniversary Parties, scheduled for this upcoming Friday August 01 at Brooklyn Bazaar (it’s a free show!). The group has been one of the most successful NYC indie exports this year, and is scheduled to play the legendary Leeds and Reading festivals in the UK later in August.

A Farewell to Eidolons? Double EP Release at Mississippi 7.30

Posted on:

The sweetness of fleeting sound. The frantic grasp of ears from one measure to the next.

Alright, listen up, this one is important. Eidolons are taking over Mississippi Studios July 30th in what might indeed be their last show for an indefinite amount of time. Ian Wollman, their “beloved BASS player/friend/chinese scholar” is moving to China. As they say, go big or go to China. Well the band is certainly going big as they will use Wednesday night’s show as a release party for their brand new double EP, The Big Yellow Shirt / Hard Hang in a Deep Country.  If this is a memorial for the band… let’s make it a monument.

Over the past six odd years, Eidolons have been engaging in collective sonic masonry, crafting their sound into the Frank Gehry of basement rock as evidenced by their most recent 2013 release, Skyhook. Frontperson, guitarist/vocalist Dan Byer’s crooning tenor sands and smooths the band’s oft jagged garage sounds whilst still making room for the occasional folk tinged slow-dance.

The band describes The Big Yellow Shirt / Hard Hang in a Deep Country, as having “some raucous tush-pushers on one side, some smooth gravy on the other.” Sounds delicious. The double EP is currently available for digital download through their Bandcamp page on a pay-what-you-want basis, but physical CDs and cassettes will be available at Wednesday night’s show.

Eidolons will be sharing the night with buddy bands, Animal Eyes and Talkative who are stellar experimental, noisy space punkers with enough energy for all. They’ll play how they feel while you feel how they play.

9:00 Talkative
10:00 Animal Eyes

Modern Vices

Posted on:

Modern Vices is lead by the energetic and compelling voice of Alex Rebek. Their self-titled debut album will be released by Autumn Tone (home to like-minded Twin Peaks and The Orwells) on October 7th. They recently released their first single "Cheap Style". Their sound strikes a charming balance between garage pop, late ’50s croon, The Smiths, and The Drum. High praise, sure, but Modern Vices is already proving they can deliver.

You can catch Modern Vices at Subt on August 3rd with Zoo Brother, Twin Cabins, and Sister Savage and at The Burlington on August 15th with Heavy Times and Dead Gaze.

Noisy NYC band on the rise: ADVAETA – live at Silent Barn tomorrow (07.29)

Posted on:

Noise-rock trio ADVAETA utilizes a static-ridden ambience to create otherworldly sonic soundscapes.  On "Gold Thought Exit" (streaming) we are acquainted with Amanda Salane’s voice, a presence as strong as the expansive atmosphere that surrounds them.  Her vocals are in part reminiscent of Andrya Ambro of Talk Normal (a band we featured on the cover of the 22nd issue of The Deli back in 2010); both feature an attitude that seems to add extra layers of meaning to what is happening lyrically or sonically.  The band’s energy is remarkably original and daring, and among the wash of reverb and distortion, complexities are revealed through dissonant melodies and creative structures. You can see ADVAETA live tomorrow (07.29) at The Silent Barn. – Jake Saunders

A NYC country girl: Michaela Anne plays Union Pool on 07.30 + hits the road

Posted on:

Michaela Anne’s ‘Ease My Mind’ is the sweet, heavy-hearted story of a young country singer recently disillusioned by the trials and tribulations of love, her family, and her city. Michaela croons these disappointments with a sadness readily combatted by grace and power, offering all of the simplicity of a true country album with the complexity of being young in a big city. Brooklyn’s country gem laments, “Is this what Mama meant when she told me how hard it can get?” with a syrupy, unmasked voice, recalling perfectly the blissful ignorance of childhood in a single line. Now, Michaela is spreading the nostalgia as she hits the road in support of the album— be sure to catch her at Brooklyn’s Union Pool on July 30th. – Jillian Dooley

Multi-instrumentalist Josh Pannepacker has been lending out his drumming skills over the last few years to notable acts like Streetwalkers, Sun Airway, and now Cheerleader. We first encountered Pannepacker as mastermind and frontman for Shorty boy-boy. Well, he has a new/old music video (which was actually shot two years ago) that he wanted to share for his track, "Crickets," which you can check out below. The psyched-out footage was edited and shot by Jon Applebaum, with help from Kevin Howley. (Photo by Grace Dickinson)
