Floydfest: Music and Beauty in the Mountains

Posted on:

Tucked away in the quiet serenity of the Virginia Mountains howls a group of over 100 musicians who gathered in the wilderness to put on a 5-day show across 10 different stages to create something unforgettable. This festival is something of a hidden gem, unlike America’s notorious music festivals full of teens and pre-teens impatiently waiting for their generations pop idols to appear. The music that plays at Floydfest is perhaps something that requires a deeper appreciation, full of folk, reggae, rock, and bluegrass, there’s no question that this festival is something of a unique experience in this day and age.

Weekly Features: Wyldlife

Posted on:

The guys in NY/NJ’s Wyldlife seem to have time traveled back to a few decades ago when The Clash where refining punk rock and Joan Jett and others were making it commercially viable, proudly planting their sound in that era, while enhancing it with an attitude vaguely reminiscent of Mr. Mick Jagger. If you are a fan of that kind of energy and haven’t heard their 2013 album ‘The Time Has Come to Rock & Roll’ then you really need to catch up.  Every song in there is a leather jacket-wearing, beer drinking, early 70s trashy party of its own. After the band made our list of "Best Emerging NYC Bands 2013" in January, we were able to get some insight from them on what’s coming next. Read Michael Haskoor interview with Wyldlife.

A Deli premiere: Backwords unveil single ‘Gloria’ from upcoming LP ‘Nest’

Posted on:

Backwords belong to that thin layer of Brooklyn bands that can be defined as "lifers" – which is a perfect word for a career in music, since there are always times when it feels like a life sentence to shit earnings. The band, active since 2008, has reportedly played over 300 shows in the US on as many as 55 different stages in NYC alone, and received a fair amount of coverage in this blog. We are premiering here their preview single "Gloria" (streaming below), from upcoming LP ‘Nest,’ which reveals a more mature sound, as if their friendly psych folk had exchanged some friendliness for power and some lightheartedness for depth. Recorded in the dead of summer, with minimal overdubs, in a large open warehouse space in Sunset Park, Brooklyn "Nest" is an album of growth, openness, and change, from a band that knows the Brooklyn indie scene like few others. ‘Nest’ will be out on September 16, the release party is scheduled for 09.20 at Baby’s All Right.

Steady Hands has a new EP, entitled Brandy Of The Damned, coming out on August 19 via Lame-O Records, but you’ll be able to grab your copy beforehand at this evening’s performance. Their Wedding release new EP

Posted on:

Their Wedding is a unique clash of Matt Healy from The 1975, sister Danielle from Haim, and Alex Clare. The simply refreshing and igniting dynamic group grabbed my attention with their new EP, Wine, with my favorite single, "I Tried To Leave You". The vocals of member Celese Hernadez are so hypnotizing and spellbinding that I caught myself dancing in my living room while my mother brought groceries in. It was quite embarrassing to say the least, but the build up of vocals and their instrumentals create an overwhelming vibe that I could not shake off. Recently going through a breakup myself, this song hit me relly hard. It’s about creating a sound, reliving a moment in your life that is so intoxicating and so incredible, that the only thing that can be used to create that instant flash of joy is music. Or maybe it’s not joy, maybe it’s heart break, maybe it’s anger or peace or whatever it may be; music can truly heal a person’s soul and I believe Their Wedding has done a great job at provoking a multitude of emotions into this EP. And thanks to True Grit Records, the 12” vinyl is now available to download and buy. Take advantage of it. – Kayla Hay

From The Deli Submissions: No Nets plays Fontana tonight (08.13)

Posted on:

If you’ve ever been a nine to fiver in New York City you’ll know that walking through the subway with the hordes of grumpy New Yorkers can be borderline existential.  It can make you feel small, insignificant, and the realization that you are indeed one of the billions of people in the world trying to float in life becomes very real.  Bronx-born Sal Mastrocola is the guy behind the project, No Nets, and he’s got a lot to say on the matter.  "Nobody wants to be average, but that’s all I’ve become" he sings on his song "Average" off his debut album, Affabel & Ready For Small Talk.  The album is a compelling tribute to the feeling of being just another one in a million.   The subjects are carried through both the creative high to low dynamics, and Mastrocola’s confident vocal and lyrical sensibility, amounting to an infectiously catchy pop record. You can catch No Nets at Fontanas Bar this Wednesday (8/13) and stream the song "Average" below.  – Jake Saunders

Though Creepoid recently made a big move to Savannah, GA, the transient band is still keeping ties here in Philly with new member Nick Kulp continuing to work with his previous group Far-Out Fangtooth. Their latest video for "Yellow Wallpaper," off the group’s self-titled LP, is also the directorial debut of local photographer and octopus chandelier sculptor Adam Wallacavage, with help from Eric Weiss. The band is currently on tour with Against Me, and will be returning to Philly on Saturday, October 4 to perform at the TLA with Balance and Composure. (Photo by Adam Wallacavage)

The Cordovas, “Do No Wrong”

Posted on:

One of the great things about writing for The Deli is being made aware of bands that would otherwise have flown under my personal radar (and they are legion.) So consider me thrilled to have been introduced to The Cordovas via our music submissions. Their second full length album, "Love Bravely" was released this May, and damn, it is magic. The Cordovas hit upon a very fluid form of alt-rock (as they bill themselves), channeling the bare bones grit of the Black Keys as well as the reverent soul of Matisyahu.  There are also elements of R&B and funk, with a few instances that could have been at home on a Modest Mouse album, all potential to make for a band trying to do too much at once if it weren’t for the capable direction of creator Joe Firstman. In additon to being a bottomless well of natural songwriting talent with years of touring experience with A-list acts, Firstman can claim four years acting as bandleader for The Carson Daily show.  The role required a high level of day-to-day adaptability, which plays strongly into the polish and cohesion of "Love Bravely." There’s something magnetic here; watch this video for "Do No Wrong," which is nothing but Firstman walking down the street looking like sh*t, and see if it doesn’t suck you in.  -Terra James-Jura

The Cordovas upcoming Nashville shows are August 21st at South Paw Supper Club, and August 28th at Soulsine Pizza.

Song Premiere: Buzzmutt – Stumble Forward

Posted on:

San Francisco experimental post punk band, Buzzmutt will be releasing a new EP next month. Today, we have an exclusive first single from their upcoming album entitled, Strange Planes of Surveillance.

This new single, Stumble Forward is a strange grungy collage of urban drenched tribal instrumentation mixed with a catchy vocal melody. A cool thing about Buzzmutt is that they sound just as grungy, raw and intense live. It’s hard to find a live band that keeps the integrity of their recordings, but they do.

Stumble Forward and Buzzmutt are a breath of fresh air because this band obliterates the laid back, washed out Cali garage rock style that we know and love. They bring a gritty east coast underground sound that derives from Baltimore/DC punk and experimental vintage rock like, CAN. Get into it. The music may be a bit of an acquired taste, but it goes down easy.

You can catch Buzzmutt live on September 11th at their album release show at the Hemlock Tavern.
