We always love when we are caught off guard by new act that we are rather unfamiliar with. Thus is the case with the debut full-length release from Seagulls entitled Great Pine. The delicately textured recordings blend folk, orchestral pop, and 8-bit into a seductive concoction that languidly draws the curtain close to the end of summer, while the misguided hope of fleeting love still lingers on in the darkness of your bedroom. You can experience all this raw emotion for yourself this Labor Day weekend when Seagulls belatedly celebrates the release of their LP this Saturday, August 30 at Bourbon & Branch with pals Tutlie and New God.

Harrison B Release Video for “Me”
Harrison B just released this video for single "Me." The track upholds his glam mashup of rock and soul, and allows his supersonic vocal ability takes front and center. The band’s groove tsunami is evocative of Lenny Kravitz, but their random sense of humor makes this video. Granted, there’s not too much of a differentiation between his battling representations of Ego and Consience aside from sunglasses and lighting (is there ever?), but it’s a fun ride with enough searing looks and flowing locks to fill a Harlequin paperback. FYF Scene Report 2014: The Bronx
Living up to their hardcore punk reputation, The Bronx opened a spirited show with vocalist Matt Caughthran stage diving into the crowd. Their 10+ years together as a band were apparent throughout the set as they played to their high energy strengths and appeased their zealous fans. Caughthran delivered a screaming version of “Knifeman” and then cursed the end of the weekend, “Live and let die. Monday’s no joke… Let’s dance. Let’s dance.” The band, who also performed at FYF under their associated act, Mariachi El Bronx, continued to thrill as the sun set during “Shitty Future”. Between profanity laced call and responses with the crowd and a generalized hatred for the looming work week, The Bronx definitely knew how to get their fans riled up and the energy lasted long after the sun set. – Jennifer Mergott

FYF 2014 Scene Report: Flying Lotus
Flying Lotus, who’s LA roots are deep (he named his second album after the city), was in his hometown element on Sunday. Perhaps also hyped from the anticipation of his fifth studio album You’re Dead, FlyLo performed for all the senses. In front of his trippy Layer 3 visuals, which worked in unison with the music, FlyLo performed a mix of “Putty Boy Strut”, “Physics for Everyone” and “Clock Catcher” to a crowd of loyal listeners. His show, as expected, was by far the most interactive at the festival. His performance of “Zodiac Shift”, which samples both Carlos Santana and Alice Coltrane (his great-Uncle) sent the crowd into a fury, with background mimicking the music video. Between the visuals and trippy beats and mixes, FlyLo more than set the stage for his next album. – Jennifer Mergott

New Track: “All Over” – Cruisr & Signs to Vagrant Records
We’ve known this for a while, but wanted to wait until the official word dropped. Indie-pop four-piece Cruisr (now with no "e" – bummer we love "e" ;o) just announced that the band has signed to Vagrant Records, and its new EP, All Over, will be released on September 23. You can check out the title track from the group’s forthcoming record below, and catch it live this weekend when Cruisr performs at the Made in America Festival.

Psych at sea: High Wasted plays on a boat with Mainland on 08.28
High Wasted is not shy at all about their drug use, or it’s role in their music. I’ll let their own description of the jam, "Acid Tape Vol. 1" do the talking: "We went to Nashville, hung a mic in the room of a haunted house, took acid, and hit record on an old reel to reel. This is what happened." The result is a psyched out surf rock extravaganza (through the deforming lens of incompetent sound engineering). Ok, the recordings are lo-fi, but the energy is unmistakably vibrant and colorful, and the band has a good live reputation. Most exciting is the show they have coming up this Thursday… because it’s on a fucking BOAT! That’s right, this Thursday (8/28) you can check out High Wasted and Mainland (who played our ten year anniversary show this year) at sea, equipped with an open bar, face painting and more. In other Deli news, High Wasted is playing our CMJ show at CBGB’s come this fall, so stay tuned for that as well. Boyd Shropshire (previously in Kurt Vile) unveils single/video “Soon”
Unlike New Yorkers – who forget they live right by the Ocean – young Floridians seem to have an innate skill of taking the beach with them wherever they go. Boyd Shropshire grew up on a swath of eastern Florida land on the Atlantic known as the "Space Coast" – no wonder his music has psychedelic influences. After playing guitar for some time with Kurt Vile, he moved to Queens in NYC to focus on his solo career. His recent single ‘Soon’ is as lazy as a (high) day spent at the beach in the dog days of the summer can get. And the single’s videos – quite amazingly – manages to recreate this atmosphere… in the backyard of a Carrol Garden apartment! Check out also the EP "Victory Weather," released in July.

False Priest Clumsy Concentration The Twitches and Punisher Play Bottom of the Hill TONIGHT
There is an exciting local show coming up TONIGHT. San Francisco based music venue, Bottom of the Hill will be hosting a night of local alternative rock with Punisher, The Twitches, Clumsy Concentration and False Priest.
Full on local shows are so rare to find (Punisher has recently moved to Oregon, but their hometown is San Francisco), so it’s nice to see the music community coming together as a full line up.
Clumsy Concentration is a hardworking teenage band making their way up the local music ranks. They’ll probably find moderate success before they can drive a car or drink. Shout out to the cool parents who support them! Punisher is a garage pop band who, as mentioned, are traveling down south from Eugene, Oregon to return to their Bay Area roots to play this gig. The Twitches is a slightly eerie pop alternative band. Their music is fast paced and will have you shuffling around the dance floor! False Priest is an established Bay Area band whose music goes from being heavy and grungy to minimal and anti folk. Their eclectic style is fun and interesting, and their lyrics are super dark and ironic. We like it!

Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler Opening for Kevin Morby & Steve Gunn at Underground Arts Aug. 26
Underground Arts is opening up its recently renovated Black Box space tonight for a sweet Tuesday night show. You’ll find Woods bassist Kevin Morby, bringing some beautiful tunes from his solo project to the Eraserhood, and guitar maestro Steve Gunn will be captivating the crowd with his intricate fingerpicking. Local favorites Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler will also be hosting the talented visitors by kicking things off this evening. The duo is releasing their debut album Slant of Light next month via Thrill Jockey, and has plans to hit the road at the end of September through mid-October in the U.S. and Canada.
