Marco Argiro’s new band is Marco With Love – live at R Bar on 09.18

Posted on:

Once described by this blog as the "rootsy rock singer with the West Coast vibe", Marco Argiro has come across our radar once more, with his new band Marco With Love. Stemming from classic indie rock influences and rootsy vibes, Marco With Love’s most recent tracks are the new music videos, "In The Shade" and Ramones-themed "Will You Remember Poison Heart". ‘In The Shade’ encapsulates the band’s heartfelt melodies and lirycal intensity, while ‘Poison Heart’ plays with 60s pop and a crooning style somewhat reminiscent of Argiro’s Florida origins – a state that like no other brings back images of the swinging sixties. In anticipation for their debut album out late 2014, you can see Marco With Love at R Bar on 9/18. – Sammie Spector

“Let’s Have a Show With No Phones” Show at The High Watt 9.10

Posted on:

This Wednesday is going to be dedicated to anyone that’s looked through a tangle of upraised arms holding glowing screens aloft and thought to themselves, "The end of the world is going to be Instagrammed…"

Of course East Nashville Underground would be the ones to put together a completely analog remedy to this epidemic. "Let’s Have a Show With No Phones Show" is going to be 100% phone-free, save for two 20-minute "phone breaks" (bless their hearts.) The night starts at 8pm, and the cover is seven fully-refundable dollars should a guest make it to the other side without checking his or her device. While no one is going to be slapping a phone from your hand, consider this an opportunity to reconnect with the way things were done long before you were a twinkle in your daddy’s eye.  Your pop’s might have said that music was better in his day, but there’s a good possibility that he was just paying more attention.

At the very least, this is a risk-free way to have three amazing bands in front of you for your complete and unadulterated listening pleasure: Machines are People Too, Penicillin Baby, and Diamond Carter. While we just raved about Penicillin Baby, we are one of many, and Diamond Carter has been receiving love on all sides, especially from our No Country for New Nashville brothers. However, we’re tickled pink by this recent development from the Machines are People Too camp. MAPT have remixed "Middle of the Night," a song by their friends Vinyl Thief that might be recognized from our current album of the month. That sort of synth4synth love, along with with this event’s entire concept, are perfect examples of the deep appreciation of music that makes this scene so great. -Terra James-Jura

Cayetana Record Release Show at Golden Tea House Sept. 7

Posted on:

With their debut album Nervous Like Me set for release on Tuesday via Tiny Engines, the pop-punk trio of Cayetana headline a record release show presented by The Guild this evening at Golden Tea House. The tight-knit group of ladies lock into a unifying sound that touches on intimate moments and memories lyrically as the vocals express an ever emotive, unprotected side. However, they find a solid manner to measure levels of raw unfiltered snapshots and intense bursts of instrumentation, while also developing songs that capture an infectious relatable element. Punk rock four-piece Albondigas, who recently released a new single, “In The Eyes,” will serve as an appetizer. The moody, melodic pop-punk of The Spirit of the Beehive is also slated to perform as is New York power-pop outfit Chumped. Clean Air Council’s GreenFest Philly returns to Headhouse Square for its ninth year today, and this year is set to be the biggest one yet. Victory Brewing will be hosting a ping pong-filled beer garden, and local, organic foods will be provided by a few of the city’s favorite food trucks. Sean Barna EP release show at The Lot, tonight (9/6)!

Posted on:

Anyone who’s seen Sean Barna live knows he’s the most passionate performer in DC. Barna’s new EP, Cutter Street, is a culmination of years of desire, experience, ambition and heart. Self-described as "slutty folk," Barna’s music music reminds me most of the soulful and woeful Irish style, with a performance and lyrics reaching Van Morrison levels of exuberance, drama, and emotional honesty. Sean Barna, winner of the DC Area Deli Artist of the Month, is a force on stage, a delight in person, and a performer to watch at any given opportunity. You can go watch him for free, tonight (6/9), at The Lot (@ Atlantic Plumbing–behind the 9:30 Club), starting 7PM, in DC.  –Natan Press

Bardo Pond Luring You Into Places Unknown at KFN Aug. 6

Posted on:

Sometimes, drifting is the best move. Bardo Pond is a band whose musical structure dictates and in fact, may suggest drifting as a policy; gradually picking up the threshold and inching it further from the starting point. In the process, stirring a wicked brew of cutting, dungeon-painting guitar countered by enchanting vocals, they’ll lure you into places unknown. Bardo Pond will be prefaced tonight at Kung Fu Necktie by the heavy-psych vibes of Gondola, hard-rocking trio The Company Corvette, and the searing rock ‘n’ roll guitar riffs of Carousel. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., $8, 8pm, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Pree release new single “Two Feet Shy.”

Posted on:

Pree’s new single, "Two Feet Shy," is their best yet. The lead single off their new record, Rima (Paper Garden Records), "Two Feet Shy" is a delightful and bright jumble of nerves and hope. The off-kilter arrangements of chiming guitars and ringing keys swirl around May Tabol’s sweet warbling jazzy vocals. A thick kick-drum in the opening section beats like the heart of a nervous lover, creating as much anticipation in the listener as the narrator. It’s a moving song, with glistening tones and splashes of color, perfect for a walk with headphones on through the cool breezes and dancing leaves of the approaching autumn. Rima is set to drop in February of 2015. For now, we eagerly look forward o more singles and you can catch Pree on tour across the country. –Natan Press

Weekend Warrior, September 5 – 7

Posted on:
With the release of their forthcoming album, Pretty Music for Pretty People, happening in early October, autumn is going to be the season of The Dead Milkmen. Alas, the band will be touring the western part of the United States during the bulk of fall, giving Philly little opportunity to see them. But before they go, the beloved satirical punk band has lined up a fitting venue for a sendoff celebration – Laurel Hill Cemetery. Join the veteran rock outfit as they entertain the living and the dead with the classics that you know all the words to, and preview some new material from next month’s release. However, be sure to arrive early to do a tour of the historic cemetery, and catch the opening performance from cyber art rockers S.T.A.R.W.O.O.D. Laurel Hill Cemetery, 3822 Ridge Ave., 7pm, $15, All Ages – Bill McThrill

NYC Band on the Rise: Told Slant

Posted on:

Told Slant is the musical project of Brooklyn-based Felix Walworth currently featuring Oliver Kalb, Gabrielle Smith and Emily Sprague. After unceremoniously dropping their 10 song LP ‘Still Water’ on bandcamp two years ago in August 2012 (and garnering very little response as a result) the ‘bedroom punk’ band officially re-released the album earlier this year with Broken World Media and embarked on an almost-national tour with NY pop band Crying. A sorrowfully beautiful collection of songs, the album trickles along quietly at a slow pace allowing the listener to fully immerse themselves in the intensity of Walworth’s dark and searching lyrics. Each song reads like a carefully crafted essay, honestly and artfully exploring relationships (and their dissolution), love, depression, confusion and the human condition. Listen to the full album here or even better purchase it on 12" vinyl via Broken World Media. – Brescia Mascheretti
