Album Review: Mermaid in China
Often times you can recognize a band’s early recordings within the first few second of listening. A lack of tonal clarity, straining to hear some of the instruments and hearing a member swear after striking a mistaken note all stick out as obvious signs that you’re listening to a bandcamp debut of a local project. Mermaid in China have, thankfully, ignored this option and instead worked to release a professional-quality debut that transmits their dance-infused indie pop compositions through synthesized tones, hypnotic rhythms and dynamic vocal arrangements.
“The Vast Divide” opens the self-titled release with an ambient space that is quickly filled with by swirling electronic melodies, a grooving bass line and contagious rhythms that need to be danced to. The second track, “Gentle,” combines acoustic and electronic instrumentation with a crisp vocal stylings like something out of a Broken Bells record. Each track from here on out has something unique to offer: be it the driving rhythm section grounding ambient flights in “The Average Man,” the anthemic chorus that dances through the catchy “Tame the Wild,” or the arrangement of that “A Stroll Through Calloway Bay” which sounds like it could be a B-side from Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds .
The release as a whole doesn’t sound so much like a cohesive album as it does a sample platter of singles that showcase the range of sounds that Mermaid in China are capable of producing. If you’d like a taste of these sounds for yourself, head over to Slabtown on Thursday, October 2nd to catch them perform alongside Clawfoot Slumber, Mega Tera and Liquid Light.

Roger Sellers releases new album
Roger Sellers does not push play. He is the one behind every note, lyric and jangle on his latest release, Primitives. Think more composer than the dreaded “DJ” label. The intricate layers Sellers creates is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Comparisons to Sufjan Stevens are just. Like Stevens, Sellers takes advantage of our need for lush sounds and intoxicating melodies. Sellers will play an album release show this Saturday at Cheer Up Charlies with visuals by Topher Sipes. Expect chill vibes and plenty of beer. The self-produced Primitives is out via Punctum Records September 30. – Allison Mayoral

Late Cambrian packs the bags for month long European tour. “Golden Time” LP out in November
Another round of congratulations are in order for The Deli Readers’ Best of NYC 2014 artist, Late Cambrian: The band just announced a (noteworthy) month long European tour with Wheatus and MC Frontalot, starting on September 30, and featuring more than 20 dates in the UK and Ireland and a few in continental Europe. Status Quo w/OhBree at The Fire Sept. 24
Tormenting yet playful like some delightfully twisted subconscious dream concoction, where slightly off-kilter becomes the status quo, OhBree will be performing tonight at The Fire. With songs that tap into a theatrical/dramatic with quirky, catchy lyrics and instrumentation that varies from bright, cheery keys and horn combinations to more heavily clouded, grey mood makers, you can’t help hearing the influence of local favorites Man Man. Like their forefathers, OhBree warps listeners into their musical world, and it’s a compelling place. Life Stinks and MUSK Support Sub Pop Records Artist Deaf Wish – 10/7
Two Bay Area based bands are set to support the Australian Sup Pop Records band, Deaf Wish on October 7th at the Hemlock Tavern in San Francisco. San Francisco based heavy garage punk band, Life Stinks is on the bill and will be pounding the stage with their heavy and vivacious punk rock music, and the Oakland based pure punk band, MUSK will be opening the show and setting the tone of the night. Both bands are fully equipped to help Deaf Wish tear the house down!
We’re excited to plug this gig because this International band will be playing such an intimate venue. We should not take what we have for granted in regards to being able to attend a number of hardworking smaller live music venues who survive and book cool acts from all over the world.
With all that said, we encourage you to check out Deaf Wish, Life Stinks and MUSK at the Hemlock Tavern on October 7th. It’s going to be a cool and insanely heavy show.
