Weekly Feature: Stone Cold Fox headlines The Deli’s CMJ show at Rockwood tomorrow (10.22)

Posted on:

Expanded to a full band for their 2014 album, "Memory Palace," Brooklyn’s Stone Cold Fox deliver a collection of songs that’re like the early Strokes in both sonic texture and easygoing vocal phrasing. (Elsewhere, there are hints of Bob Dylan’s lyricism and the emotional drama of the Killers.) All of these influences from across the decades are made fresh by the band’s intimate keyboard flourishes and succinct sound design.

Stone Cold Fox will be headlining The Deli’s CMJ show at Rockwood’s Stage 2 tomorrow October 22 at 11pm.

Video: Dark Waves, “Echo”

Posted on:

Nick Long of Dark Waves induces my music coma with every synthesized piece of pop on his EP. He’s a lyricist that tells a story in every single track, and equally puts as much thought into his beats. A beautifully haunting video to his single "Echo", that includes Leon walking through the streets in a black and white scale, creates the ominous illusion that is an echo with breathtaking cinematography, “Every time I try to let go, you keep coming back like an echo.” Dark Waves does a powerful job at getting inside your head and igniting your soul, subconsciously making you want more. – Kayla Hay

New Track: “Best Time Ever” – Khari Mateen

Posted on:

While Khari Mateen‘s latest single "Best Time Ever" might have missed its opportunity to be your summertime anthem for 2014, it does reveal a more fun, lively side of the multi-dimensional artist than we’ve ever heard from him before. Now, we’re kind of interested in hanging with him for an evening and seeing where the night takes us. You can stream the track below. And "kids, don’t do drugs."

Listen to This Exclusive Stream of Tetherball’s “Whimsy” Right Now!

Posted on:

We are so excited to bring you this exclusive stream of Tetherball’s debut album "Whimsy," a week before it’s release date of October 28th. The single "Spring Chicken" first caught out ear in September, and put us back in touch with long-lost fantasies of going fishing with Les Claypool. The subsequent video for "Bootss" put us over the edge. We were so taken by their twisted genre-hopping that we made "Whimsy" our CD of the Month, and the Tetherball camp was kind enough to let us stream the album before it officially drops. The band is doing some great things this month, including a CMJ showcase in New York on October 25th, and a show at homebase Silver Point Studios on Halloween. Take a listen below to what has got us all hot and bothered. -Terra James-Jura

Slowness Cre·scen·do and Big Surr Play Neck of the Woods – 10/24

Posted on:

Counter Culture Artist Management Presents: San Francisco based authentic shoegaze band, Slowness will be playing Neck of the Woods on Friday, October 24th. The bill is rounded out by the washed out, etherial local band, Big Surr and the Los Angeles based Cali pop band, Cre·scen·do.

If you’re into reverbed, psyched out post modern bands you’ll enjoy this show. Big Surr will reflect a more youthful sound compared to the polished and seasoned gazey style of Slowness and Cre·scen·do will play an upbeat tempo driven style of pop rock to make the night reasonably eclectic.

We recommend you make it out to this show. The music will be good and you’ll be near the beach. Sounds like a good way to spend a Friday night to us.

Found in our NYC submissions: Savants play Music Hall of W’Burg on 11.24

Posted on:

We are not sure how Brooklyn quartet Savants managed to land a gig at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on November 24, since – from the numbers we gather from their Facebook and Soundcloud profiles – it looks like they might have trouble filling that huge room. What we know, though, is that, at least musically, the guys totally deserve to play that venue. We are especially fond of their debut limited cassette ‘s opener "Think!" (streaming), which sounds like our beloved musical hero Syd Barrett fronting – dunno – a lo-fi version of The Kinks? The rest of the album is full of psychedelic slacker-style sketches, in perfect early Weezer style, but just a little more sober. Interesting ideas and melodies emerge from every single song, from the Lou Reed-esque "Something (Part 1)" to the laid back and bizarre "Us," where the slightly out of tune, gliding vocals add character to the track rather than detracting from it.

This band submitted their music for coverage here.
We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best Psych Rock songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Sons of Huns Live at Devils Point 10.22

Posted on:

Some things are just meant to go together… mac and cheese; whiskey and fightin’; Yin and Yang; and of course Rock n’ Roll and babes! This Wednesday night, The Devils Point strip club presents the latter: live, cut-throat, riff-heavy metal by Sons of Huns, who will be accompanied by the infamous badass, mowhawk yielding, tattood nudie dancer, Malice. The Huns are sure to fill out this small, single dance stage club with their raucous sounds and rowdy fans alike. Having spent a good chunk of the past year touring the States and playing with various huge names in the metal scene such as Andrew W.K, Danava, Kadavar, Graveyard, Wolfmother, and Saint Vitus to name a few, SOH only have a few remaining shows to play for us this year here in Portland before they hunker back down to record a follow up to their slaying debut album, Banishment Ritual. And what more could you ask for than such an intimate show with live nudes? 10pm, Wednesday night 10.22, $5 cover.

The charming twee pop of Field Guides: live at The Rock Shop on 11.02

Posted on:

There’s only one thing that slightly spoils this song (entitled "Lisa Loeb Probably Never Pierced Her Ears") by Bed-Stuy project Field Guides: the bass does something kind of weird (out of key?) on minute 1:16. Something like this would normally prevent a track from being covered in this blog, but this single is so catchy and charming in a early Belle and Sebastian/The Shins kind of way that we decided to make an exception, although we are aware that the band will probably hate us forever for pointing this out. Field Guides are about to release a full length entitled "Boo, Forever" – we are curious to hear the rest of the album, considering that in their 2012 debut two track single they sound like a completely different band.

Deli Premiere: Zip-Tie Handcuffs release new single, set date for album release

Posted on:

This Friday, October 24, Boston’s Zip-Tie Handcuffs will be premiering their new record, Sundream, in its entirety over on WEMF radio. The album will air at 7PM, accompanied by interviews with the band. However, if you’re impatient like me and are interested in hearing a sample of their new tunes before then, you’re in luck. I was able to get my hands on a single from the record and I have posted it below in an effort to satisfy your collective curiosity. The single, “Fwench”, is a great, gritty punk song. I really liked the production–everything sounds huge and open, a rare find among most 3-chord punk tracks. All I could think about when I first heard this song was hauling ass on the back of a pickup truck in the desert, speeding through dirt roads with the radio on full-blast. I hope the rest of the new album is even half as good as this.

Sundream will be released on November 4th at Middlesex Lounge in Cambridge, MA. The show, presented by Eye Design, will feature support from local favorites Nice Guys and Midriffs. $5 cover; show starts at 9PM; 21+ with proper ID.

For more info on the show, check out the Facebook event page. For more info about Zip Tie Handcuffs, visit their Facebook page.
