Cozy Galaxies Invade Our Universe at The M Room March 19

Posted on:

Philly-based music blog Noise Narcs have decided to make everyone’s weekend by rounding up three of its favorite local bands and encouraging “the entire audience to get drunk” (which we totally support). The main attraction is Cozy Galaxies, who have a knack for unflinchingly honest lyricism laid on top of impossibly lush, romantic instrumentation. “Clean Yourself Up” sounds like Noah and the Whale with some bite, a steady-build track with a majestic guitar refrain. “Dreamer” centers around a rousing military march. There’s also Grubby Little Hands, who are possibly in a genre all their own with their apathetic slacker-folk, while Bridge Underwater provide the pop jangle with a post-punk streak. So grab a special, and cheers! The M Room, 15 W. Girard Ave., $10, 8pm, 21+ – Joe Poteracki

Southwork Sell Out Debut Performance at KFN March 19

Posted on:

Tonight’s sold out show at Kung Fu Necktie might be Southwork’s debut performance. But it’s far from the first time that you’ve seen the seven-piece multi-instrumentalist rock outfit. The classically trained group is a former street pirate band of Mummers who have marched across South Philly with an ensemble of horns, percussion, ukuleles, and then some. It also features members of bands like The Swimmers, Fat City Reprise, and Distant Orange. When the collective takes the stage you will bare witness to a cavalcade of layered harmonies, mellotrons, kazoos, and more. Univox will be on hand to give the show a boost of energy with their arena rock anthems and multipart harmonies. Rounding out the bill will be New Jersey’s electro misfit duo Brick + Mortar. Weekend Warrior, March 18 – March 20

Noise rock all-stars Pissed Jeans are back at Johnny Brenda’s tonight. Currently signed to Sub Pop, this local minded four-piece brings the mosh with sick riffs and thrash-worthy preludes. From the brooding baseline of “Ashamed of My Cum” to the provocative sleeve of King of Jeans, Pissed Jeans blurs the definition between hardcore punk and noise while managing not to sound retro, trite, or forced. Lose yourself in the serious shred of “Caught Licking Leather” or the snarky diction of “Lip Ring” and hints of The Jesus Lizard’s bravado amped up with a side of Drunkdriver’s visceral grit can’t help but come to mind. Liable to melt your face, get a taste of Pissed Jeans antics tonight at one of Philly’s best with M Ax Noi Mach and Purling Hiss. Johnny Brenda’s. 1201 N. Welcome AZI Fellas Back at The M Room March 18

Posted on:

Socially conscious Cambodian hip hop crew AZI Fellas just landed back in Philly after returning from their homeland. While the boys had made their first trip to Phnom Penh to soak up some of the underground sounds of their country’s evolving hip hop community, their journey had a higher purpose. They returned with the One Love Movement, a Philly-based non-profit in support of better immigration policies and stopping deportation, to videotape footage and help bring awareness to this issue haunting the immigrant population. I love do-gooders, especially when they have mad skillz. So welcome the posse back this evening at the M Room! They’ll be joined by the smooth flow of Young Gliss (who I’m also really feelin’) and Voss. The M Room, 15 W. Girard Ave., 9pm, $10 adv/$15 door, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Chill Out w/Tadoma and Friends at Pilam March 18

Posted on:

When multi-instrumentalist Joe Patitucci, otherwise known as Tadoma, felt inspired by his previous physical and chemical journeys, he created the sonic sideshow that was his 2010 album Fieldnotes. The songs that manifest themselves during live performancesexploit the senses with an ever looping pattern of toy instruments, drum machines, and enough bizarre samples to mirror 70’s krautrock icons. I was highly impressed by his last minute set when he opened Arc In Round’s EP release show that The Deli presented after Post Post abruptly broke up dropping off the bill. He is the perfect addition to this evening’s lineup of experimental music cohorts at Pilam, which will be headlined by the constantly evolving psychdelitronic wizardry of Gemini Wolf. The band has been hitting the studio and aiming to drop their newest release Infinite Sand Dunes, but also released a hot new ambient remix for I’ll Take U that needs to bbe heard! Also on tap will be chiptune fuzzy-headed superstar Dino Lionetti a.k.a. Cheap Dinosaurs, who headlined last year’s chiptune extravaganza, Magfest. And rounding out the lineup will be recent Deli Philly Artist(s) of the Month winner, Music for Headphones. Pilam, 3914 Spruce St., 8pm, $5, All Ages – Bill McThrill

Norwegian Arms Come Out Swinging at JB’s March 17

Posted on:

Philly’s own Norwegian Arms is playing a pretty buzzworthy show tonight at Johnny Brenda’s, where they’ll open for the Baltimore-based, Wham City no-wave breakouts Future Islands. I saw Norwegian Arms at band leader Brendan Mulvihill’s home-base, The Ox, and their freak-folk stylings translated into one frenetic and catchy performance. The intimacy of their recordings is just as super endearing. The aged, home-made sound gives it a fantastic feeling when supporting Mulvihill’s friendly voice that quakes like ancient floorboards. Some of the most enjoyable tracks are the ones released as solo demos on Mulviihill’s blog, which serves as a hub for his many creative endeavors. The tunes recall early Devendra Banhart and K Records cohort, Little Wings, with the addition of some Dodos-esque drumming. Norwegian Arms is set to release a limited pressing of some new recordings wrapped in bio-degradable and extremely eco-friendly packaging (props to Mulvihill & co. for utilizing art to highlight and improve on environmental issues). Dr. Dog‘s Eric Slick will be performing on stage with Norwegian Arms this evening. The show is also rounded out by fellow Phill-ites Club Lyfestile dance squad, who will be doing all they can to get booties-a-shakin’. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ – Adam G.

Free Restorations Record Release Show at KFN March 17

Posted on:

When members of hardcore outfit Jena Berlin retraced their steps and formed a rustic indie rock band in Restorations, they provided just the right musical backdrop for the raspy, dynamic vocals of singer Jon Loudon. After releasing a 7-inch, a split album with Rosetta, the band has been hard at work on releasing a full-fledged album that they will be releasing on vinyl via Tiny Engines on April 19 and early digitally via iTunes/Bandcamp on March 22. Tonight they’ll be celebrating the upcoming release with a free show at Kung Fu Necktie. The self-titled album was recorded by Algernon Cadwallader’s Joe Reinhart, and mixed at The Headroom by Jonathon Low, who has previously worked with Dr. Dog and mewithoutYou. Joining them on the bill will be buddies The Holy Mess and Gods and Queens. Restorations will also be doing an acoustic set at Grindcore House on March 26. Kung Fu Necktie, 1201 N. Front St., 8pm, Free, 21+ – Bill McThrill

“Jerry Lewis’ Birthday, A Little Berlin Benefit” w/Mammal of Paradise at KFN March 16

Posted on:

Tonight will be good chance for you to support the arts by coming out to Kung Fu Necktie for “Jerry Lewis’ Birthday, A Little Berlin Benefit”. Little Berlin is a rad artist-run collective and gallery space located in North Philly. “Proceeds from this event will go directly to helping the organization remain open and able to cultivate creativity in the Philadelphia community.” Sure, I’m always happy to help out a good cause. But what I’m really excited about is the rare live performance by Brooklyn/Philly gloom pop masters Mammal of Paradise who will be headlining. If you’re not familiar with Mammal of Paradise yet, it’s a new project from the guys of Bucks County’s Aderbat. They had a couple of fine-ass full-lengths in Rabbits and Rocks and We Belong to the Sea that were produced by Andrew Weiss (Ween, Akron/Family, Henry Rollins Band), who also joined them again on their latest endeavor. Mammal of Paradise have their debut self-titled album available here. Check out below a couple of my favorite new tracks, “Hey Mister” (which needs to be remixed over and over again) and “Anyone’s Song” (an achingly beautiful slow-burner)! And I hope to see you this evening! Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., $10, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Staring Into the Void w/Void Vision at The Troc March 16

Posted on:

The mood may feel a little darker and drearier in The Balcony of The Troc tonight when Void Vision takes the stage armed with eerie futuristic sounding synth lines intermingled with secretively hushed female vocals. Singer/programmer Shari Vari’s dance-alone-in-your-room tracks take me back to my disenchanted youth when the world simply just didn’t understand, except for the artist/band that happened to be blaring out of my stereo at the time helping me make it through yet another evening. (Ha – shit, was I really that much of a drama queen once?) I’m also rather intrigued by the combination of Whatever featuring Espers’ cellist Helen Espvall as they will be joining forces with Alien Architect. And Gemini Wolf’s Michael McDermott a.k.a. Mikronesia will be laying down the perfect down-tempo grooves to match tonight’s lineup. The Trocadero, 1003 Arch St., 8pm, $9, 21+ (Photo by ZINCINC) – Alexis V.

Interview w/The Deli’s Philly Best Emerging Artists Poll Winners: Sun Airway!

Posted on:

If you live in Philly, you should be quite familiar with The Deli’s Philly Best Emerging Artists Poll Winners, Sun Airway. Well, this week the former A-siders will be descending down to SXSW to perform anywhere and everywhere as many up-and-coming indie acts tend to do, but we are certain that our champs will leave their mark on this year’s festival. We had a chance to catch up with Sun Airway’s Jon Barthmus before he started his journey down to Austin, and surprisingly there wasn’t much talk at all about this week’s chaotic schedule of events (you can find Sun Airway’s SXSW schedule as well as other Philly acts here). But Jon was nice enough to share with us some of his personal favorite things and possible future plans on the horizon for Sun Airway here.
