Hezekiah Leaves & Spinning Joneses Album Release Party at Bookspace May 13

Posted on:

Separately Hezekiah Jones and The Spinning Leaves are easily regarded as the cities two premiere folk bands. But together the Philly Folk Parade founders have been performing together in perfect harmony for quite some time. The uplifting, ethereal vibes that have resonated from these artists joining in union has led to the inception of “Hezekiah Leaves & The Spinning Joneses”, who have recently released their debut collaborative album on Mad Dragon Records. The bands are set to celebrate its release tonight during a special album party at Bookspace (and the $12 entry fee will also get you a copy of the album). They’ll be joined by longtime friends and fellow members of the Philly Folk Parade, Joshua Park and Nick Esposito of The Savage Detectives. And Friday the 13th will be far from unlucky once special guests The Extraordinaires take the stage. The band recently bid farewell to founding member and bassist Matt Gibson who left to join Man Man, and welcomed new member Adam Ravitz. And tonight they’ll be ready to bring their special blend of supercharged pop music with folk sensibilities to liven up the festivities. Bookspace, (Please contact one of the acts for details.), 8pm, $12 (includes a copy of the new album), All Ages – Bill McThrill

Where Is My Mind?: The Armchairs

Posted on:

The Armchairs are performing their last show this Friday at Johnny Brenda’s with buddies Orbit to Leslie, The Circadian Rhythms, and Dinosaur Feathers, and The Deli Magazine will also be there presenting it. We wanted a chance to interview our loveable psych-pop crew for surprisingly the first and last time. Like an Armchairs show, it was all about being in the moment. We caught up with the band right before they headed off to their second last show in Brooklyn at Death by Audio, and conducted the interview in their van on Broad Street parked in front of the Merriam Theater. But of course, with The Armchairs, we needed to have a bazaar twist so we interviewed each member separately while the others sat there with earplugs and making weird noises so not to hear each others’ answers. It was strange and fun, and exactly what you’d expect from The Armchairs. We hope that you can join us tomorrow night to wish them well and show support as they get ready to head towards the future separately. But first, check out what each of them had to say about their amicable breakup and being in The Armchairs HERE. Much love! (Photo by Michael Persico from Philadelphia Weekly)

The Shorty Boy-Boy Experience at KFN May 12

Posted on:

From his beginnings with bands like Saudi Arabia to creating low-key minimalistic, experimental ditties that are infectiously catchy, Shorty Boy-Boy has created a live show that truly embraces the over-the-top nature of glam/art rock. And from random Terminator montages to playing chess and hopping into bed during guitar solos, his antics certainly provide a unique experience that will attract fans looking for more than business-as-usual performances by other acts. Tonight Shorty Boy-Boy will be performing alongside the pop rock stylings of Cold Fronts, the guitar-fueled garage rock of Bulletproof Tigers, and the radio-friendly tunes of Temple undergrads The JLE. But be sure to stick around for the dirty dance party aftermath courtesy of female DJ duo Stab & Grab. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $8, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Live Performance Video: “Wolfboy” – Dragon King

Posted on:

Below is video footage of Dragon King performing “Wolfboy” from a recent show at The Barbary. While we are fans of the recorded version featuring Peedi Crakk, we’re confident this video demonstrates how Dominic Angellela and crew’s live version simply fuckin’ kicks ass even without Peedi (or clear sounding vocals)! Special thanks to Stupid Easy for sharing. Enjoy! – The Deli Staff

The Holy Mess Gettin’ Sloppy at The Barbary May 11

Posted on:

With a name like The Holy Mess, you expect plenty of beers to be drank and spilled during their set as strangers’ bodies fly into each other. An eclectic mix of pop punk and soul, their music allows for a smooth blend of raging and shoving between ecstatic hi fives. The local foursome’s pop melodies complimented with primal yells and adrenaline-filled riffs create a somewhat familiar yet innovative sound that will pack plenty of sweaty bros onto the often perspiration-soaked dance floor of The Barbary this evening. The Holy Mess will be opening for Dear Landlord, which is made up of members from Copyrights, Houseboat, Off with Their Heads, and Gateway District, along with dirty Jerz’s Banquet and fledgling local outfit Luther. The Barbary, 951 N. Frankford Ave., 6:30pm, $8, All Ages – Emma Branson

Where Is My Mind?: Man Man’s Honus Honus

Posted on:

Life Fantastic is a difficult listen. It’s not because the fourth album (which hits shelves today via ANTI- Records) from indie outfit (and Philly’s golden sons) Man Man is hard to digest sonically. No, it’s far from that. Instead, Life Fantastic–the first album recorded with a "proper" producer (Mike Mogis of Bright Eyes and Monsters of Folk) in Omaha, Nebraska–is this beautiful rage of avant-pop hooks, distorted madness, and vintage explorations. It’s a winding trip into floating out of control and pulling yourself through the dust of life’s natural cycle. And that’s what Man Man frontman Honus Honus a.k.a. Ryan Kattner loves about Life Fantastic–the shift in direction that, while connected, takes you some place new, some place unexpected. It’s a journey, he says, also explained with the three totem sculptures created by New York-based artist Brad Kahlhamer that appear throughout the album artwork (one mouse-like critter is featured on the cover). We had a chance to chat with Kattner about the beauty of Life Fantastic, the emotions that fueled the songs, and what makes Philly unique HERE.

Lantern Open for Dirty Beaches at FUC – Side Chapel May 10

Posted on:

Lo-fi psych-garage act Lantern is the brainchild of Canuck and Philly transplant Zachary Devereux Fairbrother (formerly of Omon Ra/Omon Ra II) with help from Emily Robb and Sophie White. They recently released a new cassette Stranger I Come/Stranger I Leave via Night People. You’ll find dirty, blues-influenced mind-fucking tracks from their latest effort, but minimalistic, atmospheric tracks like “In The Night Alone” from Deliver Me From Nowhere certainly sound like they could have been pulled from the soundtrack of your favorite David Lynch film. Lantern will be opening the sold out show tonight in the First Unitarian Church – Side Chapel for Dirty Beaches which is led by Alex Zhang Hungtai who actually once played bass with Fairbrother on Lantern’s earlier recordings. Fairbrother and Robb recently did an interview with Vice Magazine that was posted yesterday (which you can read HERE) and should raise plenty of eyebrows in the Philly community – possibly making them the most notorious local band since Clockcleaner. The 7” was mixed and recorded by Al Ashraf, and was produced by Slipshod Mucus Kiss Recordings. Life Dreams will be available on Friday, July 15, but until then you can sample their first offering below. Enjoy! – The Deli Staff

The Many Faces of Creepoid at KFN May 9

Posted on:

The many faces of Creepoid are coming to the cozy stage of Kung Fu Necktie tonight to cure you of the Monday blahs! Which version of Creepoid will show up this evening? Will it be the stripped-down, almost acoustic version with multi-instrumentalist Dave Saylor (Exploding World) that they recently unveiled in their Big Ugly Yellow Couch Session? The rockin’, grunge-y folk outfit that has the blogosphere buzzing? Or the punk-as-shit crew that may or may not finish their set before imploding on stage and destroying their instruments? Well, you’ll just have to show up to see for yourself. But I guarantee that it will definitely be entertaining. Kung Fu Necktie, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 8pm, $8, 21+ (Photo by David Turcotte) – Q.D.
