It will be the first time they’ve used one of their “Feed the Beat” artists in a national campaign. Chiddy Bang will also be teaming up with Taco Bell to give away FREE tickets for a show on Wednesday, May 25 at the First Unitarian Church that will be streamed live as well. Details are below.

Photo Recap: THE FINAL ARMCHAIRS SHOW (Maybe)!

Posted on:

I was out last Friday night covering the Hezekiah Leaves and Spinning Joneses Release Party at Bookspace (which I’ll have photos up for you soon), but I was very happy to be able to make it over to Johnny Brenda’s to capture some amazing photos of the FINAL performance by The Armchairs. The madcap foursome certainly didn’t fizzle out like most bands tend to do when breaking up. In fact, it was (as I am sure most of their fans and friends will agree) the BEST ARMCHAIRS SHOW EVER which is obviously bittersweet (and makes me believe that they will share the stage together again someday), but we all had a blast anyways as you will see from the photos HERE. Enjoy! – David Turcotte

Party Photographers Get Moody at D!D!G May 15

Posted on:

Party Photographers will bring their moody surf rock to Danger! Danger! Gallery tonight. The Philly trio will induce some aggressive bopping with material from latest effort Second Masterpiece, their 4-track EP, and overcast follow-up to debut self-titled release. This collection of ambient lo-fi rock takes a minimalistic Japanther left out in the rain, and sprinkles it with the reverberating antiquity of 70s punk. This eerie vintage rock ‘n’ roll is haunted by singer Elizabeth Rogers’ smooth and vaporous vocals…think Beach House on a half a dose of ritalin. Party Photographers’ vibed-out pop is sure to bring a flowery basement punk party to the West Philly DIY venue. They’ll be sharing the stage with Dikes Of Holland, Dangerbird, Fossil Eyes, and Holy Ghost People. Danger! Danger! Gallery, 5013 Baltimore Ave., Philadelphia, PA, 8pm, $5 – 10 donations, All Ages – Jules Friedland

Grimace Federation Takeover at Triumph Brewery May 14

Posted on:

Since it is about to start raining for what seems like forever, you should get out to Triumph Brewery tonight to see Grimace Federation while you still don’t have a lame excuse like, “it’s raining.” Personally, I would take just about anything to get me away from this Italian Market Festival down in South Philly. Grimace Federation have been taking their forward moving spacey post-rock on the road recently, but tonight they are playing a sweet local gig with their new bassist Jim Calverese. Their hard-driving psychedelic infused epics are great to get the body moving or just the head nodding, but regardless they are definitely given new life in a live setting, especially the massive vibraphones, so go get your drink on and enjoy the ride. Triumph Brewery, 117 Chestnut St., 8pm, Free, 21+ Adam G.

Buried Beds Headline at JB’s May 14

Posted on:

The lustrous subtlety of Philadelphia’s folk/chamber-pop quintet Buried Beds always brings a smile to my face. There’s a bohemian beauty to their littoral spirit, where coasting radio-pop arrangements are interrupted by soaring strings, spirited piano plays, and percussion wails–just check their performance of "Breadcrumb Trail" below from their sophomore release, Tremble the Sails, for Knox ivi’s weekly Eleven O’Clock Rock webcast. And now, after depriving us of their golden sound for a bit, the five-piece, who toured with local indie faves Dr. Dog earlier this year, will finally play a proper headlining show tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. They’ll showcase some can’t-wait-for-it new tunes, perform some never-before old ones, and possibly throw in a cover (some special guests are coming along for the ride but you have to show up to see who). The brash, obscure synth-psychs of Philly’s one-man wonder Ape School, whose "Marijuana’s on the Phone" b/w "Weak in the Teeth" single drops this summer on Needless Records, will also work the stage with Buried Beds’ comrade Dr. Dog’s Eric Slick on drums, and New York’s prog-folkster collective In One Wind will take the opening slot. So drag yourself out of bed, enjoy the weekend and catch some Buried Beds before they leave us again for most of the summer. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave, 9pm, $10, 21+Annamarya Scaccia

Mr. Unloved’s Birthday Bash at Tritone May 14

Posted on:

From meshing rockabilly with carnival music to sideshow oriented theatrics, Mr. Unloved is one truly unique entertainer. And he’s sure to pull out all the stops when he celebrates his birthday at Tritone tonight. He’ll be joined by St. James & The Apostles, a power trio that features a former member of Asteroid #4 and Mondo Topless. The band has also joined forces with the Unloved one in the past when they were a part of The Three 4 Tens. Helping out to warm up the party will be psychedelic tinged alt rockers Pointcloud, twisted garage swingsters The Improbables, and the full blown force of rockabilly surf rockers Full Blown Cherry. Tritone, 1508 South St., 9pm, $7, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Weekend Warrior, May 13 – 15

Posted on:

We have a couple of shows that we are presenting this weekend, and you should definitely come join us. It will be bittersweet tonight, but we wanted to see The Armchairs off with a bang! Come to Johnny Brenda’s this evening because it will be the LAST TIME you’ll get to experience them performing live! (Well, we are still hoping for a reunion someday, but we’ll all probably a little older, fatter and balder so it will be the last time we’ll see them perform looking as pretty as we do. You can also check out our first and last interview with the individual members of The Armchairs HERE.) They’ll be joined by musically talented buddies Orbit to Leslie, The Circadian Rhythms and Dinosaur Feathers to make sure that they get a proper send off. We’ll also be teaming up with the Rock to the Future crew and Cloud Entertainment to provide some hope for the future of our beloved Philly music scene. Please join us at Circle of Hope for another Rock to the Future Benefit Show this Saturday with K Record’s Jason Anderson, Dead Milkmen’s Joe Jack Talcum, When I Was 12, Ghost/Light and Boy with Robot. They’ll also be raffling off some nice prizes like a R5 10 Show Pass, brunch for 2 at the Four Seasons, and much, much more. We hope to see you at one or both of these events this weekend! Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+; Circle of Hope, 1125 S. Broad St., 5pm, $6, All Ages

Psalmships Looming at DDG May 13

Posted on:

The ghost folk project Psalmships will be playing a show at Danger Danger Gallery tonight. Joshua Britton has been making music with the help of many talented Philly friends, and has been churning out a fairly prolific amount of recorded material ever since, including his first record of live material collected and released earlier this week on Baby, I’m Wild. In the album, the creaky intimacy of his music is fully captured. His vocals, reminiscent of Jason Molina of Songs: Ohia, is an Americana baritone that is as haunting as the songs themselves. Also performing are NYC’s The Loom, who put on a killer live show, and locals Annachristie of Sisters 3 and Former Belle. It should be a great night of folk in our favorite West Philly DIY staple. Danger Danger Gallery, 5013 Baltimore Ave., 8pm, $5 – $10 Donation, All Ages – Adam G.
