Free Download: Covers – Nightlands

Nightlands, the bedroom-pop side project of The War on Drugs bassist Dave Hartley, has given us one more thing to dream about via his recently-released free digital single, Covers. Recorded during his travels, Covers features his lulling, swoon-sweet take on Lindsey Buckingham’s 1981 classic "Trouble", plus his disquieting version of Scott Walker’s "Big Louise". You can download it now HERE.

Nightlands will also hit the road for a North American tour with Norwegian indie singer-songwriter Sondre Lerche starting May 31 in Toronto (with a stop in Philly at World Cafe Live on June 3). And it’ll be a busy time for Hartley–not only will he be opening as Nightlands for Lerche, he’ll also play bass in his band for the tour. A Message from the Good Folks at R5 & Mariposa Food Co-op!

Bull Gervasi, who really inspired us to start R5 and who is pretty much the reason we have shows at The First Unitarian Church (he was one of the founders of "The Cabbage Collective" – the first group of kids to use the church as a show space), has been helping to run Mariposa Food Co-op in West Philly for years. Now he and all the members there are trying to renovate an old bank building on Baltimore Ave to make the store five times bigger and have a ton of space for more food, community events, roof garden, etc. Turning it into a space/store that would be for us as a community. 
 
It’s really awesome and this is just the sort of independent community effort we need more of in Philly, with younger people running the show.
 
But Bull and Mariposa need to raise a bunch more money before May 31st to open on schedule. Can you throw in a few bucks to help? We decided over this weekend that R5 will match the next $5,000 that gets donated….so whatever you give in the next few days gets doubled. Click here to watch their video and help out:
 

What Bull and the others are doing over at Mariposa Food Co-op doesn’t happen enough in Philly : Young people start something, it really takes off, and just gets bigger and bigger. They’re going out on a limb with this big new building, and we’ve got to make sure they succeed so more people will take more risks and build great stuff for everyone to enjoy.

Photo Recap: The Homophones at KFN

Last Wednesday night, The Homophones promised: “Balloons. Beer specials. Fake flowers. Real blood. New songs. And a Yes cover.” They delivered and then some. The band also brought along new member and female vocalist Kate Fabrizio. You can check out my photos from their set HERE. Keep a look out for Jason Ferraro’s yet-to-be-named new project (well, it was originally called NOWHERE until he discovered that a cheesy alt rock band from Switzerland was already using it). They’ll be performing live on July 16 at the M Room with Gang and Sgt. Sass. Ferraro also has plans to take a trip to LA in the near future to record an EP for the new side project with Mad Decent’s Bosco Delrey. – David Turcotte

R5’s Punk Rock Flea Market Spring Fever Edition!

With all of the sweet shows that they’ve had over the years, it’s pretty safe to say that R5 Productions has been good to us and Philly. Well, today is the day to return the favor by attending their bi-annual fundraiser and picking up some cool swag in the process. R5 Productions are hosting the “Spring Fever Edition” of their Punk Rock Flea Market across from Starlight Ballroom. And you’ll have time to pick up plenty of vinyl, books, vintage clothing, vegan baked goods, a moped, someone’s first born, etc. from the 250+ tables that will be hustling their items. If you’re lucky, you may even be able to pick up a coveted 10 show pass at R5’s booth along with electronic gadgets, concert tickets, and more. And since all the proceeds will go towards ensuring their yearly budget for booking shows, it will be a win-win situation for all of us. We hope to see everyone strolling around the market! Ground Up in the Rotation at The Blockley May 21

Ground Up consists of emcees Malakai and Azar and producer Bij Lincoln (a.k.a. Malcolm McDowell, Alex Azar, and Bijan Houshiarnejad, whose brothers are in Yep Roc’s Drink Up Buttercup). The crew started off back in 2008 after meeting as freshman at Temple University, and has been plotting a takeover of hip hop one mixtape at a time ever since. So far the prolific young group has already released six mixtapes, which are all available for free download HERE. Their most recent effort, Up Late, features contributions from legends in the Philly hip hop community, Freeway and Peedi Crakk. Ground Up’s sound can be attributed to their smooth production work, eclectic musical influences, and undeniable talent as beat makers. Their laid-back style beats are complimented fittingly by Malakai and Azar’s poetic wordplay and spoken word type vocal delivery. They’ll be joined by Sela, Wyldlyfe, and Dosage as well as DJ Phsh. The Weenies Rock for VH1’s Save the Music Foundation at Rachel’s House May 21

The Weenies are a children’s punk band and the senior project of Slutever’s Rachel Gagliardi. Tonight they will be performing at Rachel’s House to raise money for VH1’s Save the Music Foundation, which is “a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring instrumental music education in America’s public schools, and raising awareness about the importance of music as part of each child’s complete education.” Joining them on the bill will be post punk outfit Cousin Brian, alt rockers The Sniffles and Gaston. End the World w/Golden Ages & Hop Along at PhilaMOCA May 21

Tonight’s show at PhilaMoca is a stacked and eclectic one. Deerhaus co-founder and electronic wiz kid Francis Tseng a.k.a. Golden Ages will be headlining the show with his filled out live band sound. As stated on their Facebook, this will be their last show for an indefinite amount of time so it is bound to be a doozy. While Golden Ages on record land somewhere between the visceral, shape-shifting pop of Animal Collective and the blissful waves of chillness oozing from artists like Millionyoung and Washed Out. The more guitar-driven live sound shows Golden Ages from a different angle, a less electronic one, but still atmospheric and enrapturing. One of Philly’s best kept secrets, though not for long I’m sure, Hop Along will be performing as well. The Quinlan siblings will be bashing out their cacophonous folk tunes while Frances unleashes her vibrant croon that is both skittering and maternal. Brother Quinlan, a.k.a. Mark, will also be playing with Chicago migrant artist Shawn Rosenblatt a.k.a. Netherfriends along with Andy Molholt from The Armchairs (RIP). Don’t miss out on this live show, it could be the last living thing you ever see.
