Philly Punx Picnic Picks and Schedule

Posted on:

Five years ago, the Philly Punx Picnic was merely an acoustic show and BBQ, but is now a full blown six-day festival. This year’s events feature over 40 bands (both touring and local), BBQs, block parties, homebrews, vegan food, and a daylong show under I-95 at FDR Skate Park. It’s going to be a great time so be sure to come out and support this truly special DIY festival. We just wanted to share with you our picks of the local acts that you might want to catch. New Track: “Voices” – Purling Hiss

Posted on:

Purling Hiss premiered a new track today on Visitation Rites called “Voices” from their 6-song EP Lounge Lizard (Mexican Summer). It’s a lazy day rocker to help pass the time lounging around in the infernal heat and humidity of summer. Well, maybe not today because it’s damn fuckin’ beautiful out! But you can still enjoy it below while chillaxing with a beer and a joint (just don’t let the "don’t wanna be alone" and "don’t wanna be stoned" lines mess with your head). Cheers! – The Deli Staff

Official Debut of White Birds Opening for Crooked Fingers at KFN June 29

Posted on:

White Birds will be making their official debut tonight at Kung Fu Necktie. Former members of Drink Up Buttercup, James Harvey, Farzad Houshiarnejad, and Mike Cammarata have left behind the thrashing trashcans and carnival-esque theatrics for a much more somber, prettier sound. It seems that the aggressive operatic wails of Harvey’s classically trained voice have matured finding more solace in breezy harmonies. With their musical preferences generally rooted in the classics, you may discover that the new tunes have more similarities to genteel works by Simon & Garfunkel and laidback West Coast 60’s pop than the rowdy psychedelic escapades of White Album-era Beatles (which is a nice change for this listener but that is coming from someone who has been hearing most of the same DUB material live for years long before the songs finally made it on to their Yep Roc release). Expect the release of a new self-titled full-length album to come out this year, and fall in love all over again this evening when White Birds open for Archers of Loaf front man Eric Bachman’s Crooked Fingers. Kung Fu Necktie, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 8pm, $12 adv/$14 door, 21+ – Q.D. Tran

FYI on DIYs in PHL: Philly Punx Picnic

Posted on:

An idea conjured up 5 years ago based upon the visions of several other music picnics around the U.S., the Philly Punx Picnic, which started out as a simple outdoor acoustic show and BBQ, has now grown into a 6-day festival featuring over 40 bands, BBQ, homebrews, multiple block parties, a show under the freeway at FDR Skatepark, and much more. Founded by two bright, motivated punks Nyssa Capps and Chris Tsonos, the Philly Punx Picnic aims to showcase local Philly bands and locations, support touring groups, and celebrate punk on the 4th of July. The DIY event has doubled in size each and every year, thus bringing it to “festival” status, which the two say makes things a whole lot more “real” as it has become an attraction that people all over are coming to experience. Find out more about the Philly Punx Picnic, which will be going on from June 29 – July 4, from our recent interview with Capps and Tsonos HERE.

Cat Vet Ready to Rile Things Up at Empty Space June 27

Posted on:

Yes, the ladies of Cat Vet might wear their hearts on their sleeves (and Facebook) for cats and the movie Dirty Dancing, but don’t expect them to shy away from a mosh pit or throwin’ down with the boys in Philly’s underground music scene. The local grunge-y, punk trio consisting of Portland transplant Dawn Riddle (who has also sung and played guitar on past Japanther albums), Kristin Hankins, and Jesse Higgins will be bringing their riot grrrl power to Empty Space to rile things up on a Monday night. They’ll be joined by delightful lo-fi songstress Kate Ferencz, the soothing experimental pop of Snow Caps – a fleshed out bedroom project from the mind of Andrew Keller (Hermit Thrushes, Folklore), and Athens singer-songwriter Madeline. Empty Space, 2005 N. Frankford Ave., 7:30pm, $5, All Ages – Alexis V.

Dry Feet Open for Fucked Up & JEFF the Brotherhood at FUC June 26

Posted on:

I’m lovin’ that local surf punk trio Dry Feet have been crawling out of the basements of Philly onto bigger bills lately. Ha…well, technically their show tonight at the First Unitarian Church is in a basement, but you get my drift. These guys keep it loose and rad so you’ll want the party to continue long after their power-packed set ends! Lucky for us that they are on a sweet lineup with the heavily buzzed about JEFF the Brotherhood and Fucked Up so there will be plenty of more tunes to scramble your brain for the rest of the evening. Summer is here, and you better be there! First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 7:30pm, $12 adv/$13 door, All Ages (Photo by Jenelle) – Alexis V.
