Peasant Headlines w/a Full Band at WCL July 6

Peasant is the moniker of working class singer, songwriter and producer Damien DeRose. The young artist built his reputation and honed his songwriting skills performing on bills alongside the class of talented musicians that emerged from the Bucks County indie music scene like Drink Up Buttercup, Illinois, and Adebat. After recording and self-releasing his debut album, Fear Not, Distant Lover, Derose signed to Paper Garden Records releasing his first “official” label album 2008’s On the Ground to much critical acclaim which sent him and his genteel voice on national and international tours. His music has also been featured on CBS, ABC, Showtime, and MTV shows including Bones, The United States of Tara, Kyle XY and Private Practice as well as by Apple, Blackberry, and Starbucks. DeRose has been in the studio this year with other musicians for the first time, and he’s returned with a full backing band consisting of Alex Bortnichak on drums, Joe Montone on keys and shakers, and Mike Ruhl on bass. Live Show Recap: Work Drugs, CSLSX, Wrestling & Smooth Sailing DJs at JB’s

As part of The Roots’ two-day takeover of Philly with their 4th of July Jam, Work Drugs dealt out their smooth-fi tunes at Johnny Brenda’s this past Sunday to get folks warmed up for the next evening’s festivities on the Ben Franklin Parkway (and possibly laid). They brought along ultra-groovy CSLSX and Wrestling (featuring members of Power Animal) as well as the Smooth Sailing DJs [which included Kenny Bloggins (Flufftronix), Christopher Crossfade (DJ Romes), Michael Tender (Low Budget), and Joey Maserati (Dirty South Joe)]. Rock and Read Fest 2011!

Cloud Entertainment will be hosting the Rock and Read Fest on July 30 appropriately at Bookspace. The event’s proceeds will go to support our favorite local after-school music program Rock to the Future. Philly bands who will be donating their rock skills for the evening will be Mischief Brew (whose Erik Petersen will be performing solo tonight at Danger! Danger! Gallery), Dragon King, New Motels, and Satellite Hearts. They’ll also be joined by Harry and the Potters, MC Kreacher and Uncle Monsterface. Geology Class in Session at KFN July 5

The indie folk side project of mewithoutYou’s bassist Greg Jehanian, Geology (formerly named The Tourist), will be performing at Kung Fu Necktie tonight. Jehanian recently lent his talents to the sold out Pizza Brain benefit at Johnny Brenda’s alongside musical brethren Aaron Weiss. They joined forces with other local musically inclined pals for a set of Neutral Milk Hotel covers which included a performance of the classic In the Aeroplane over the Sea in its entirety. Jehanian will be making another rare appearance this evening to share his rustic Americana tunes. The Roots Present Philly’s 4th of July Jam at Ben Franklin Parkway!

Did you hear that The Roots are performing a free super secret show on the Ben Franklin Parkway tonight? Ok, so maybe it’s not so super secret, but it’s definitely free! The famed Philly institution is headlining tonight’s Philly’s Fourth of July Jam and Grand Finale Fireworks, closing out the week-long annual Wawa Welcome America! Festival with ?uestlove acting as its musical director. Besides the Main Stage this year with Earth Wind & Fire, Michael McDonald, Estelle, Sara Bareilles, and DJ Jazzy Jeff, plus a special Gamble and Huff tribute for the 40th anniversary of their Philadelphia International Records label, there will also be ?uesto’s Stage with Nicos Gun, Res, Donn T, Kindred The Family Soul, Chin Chin, and the last minute addition of ultra smoothly hilarious Cookie Rabinowitz (feat. Celebrate American Independence w/Joe Jack Talcum at KFN July 4

Local punk all-star Joe Jack Talcum sets to croon out acoustic anthems of rebellion, life, and lust. Co-founder of the legendary Dead Milkmen, Joe Jack’s solo work is heartfelt and peculiar, with the perfect amount of tongue-in-cheek sensibility to keep fans of his earlier antics with the Milkmen smitten by his clever lyricism. Tracks like “U Turn Me On” and “Photograph” prove Joe Jack’s skills are timeless, not to mention memorable. Known to belt out “Punk Rock Girl” every now and then, catch Talcum along with No-wave creepsters TV Ghost and frenetic cuts like “The Recluse” and “The Network.” Add in fast-paced faves by Nobunny (think “Somewhere New” and the screams of “Tina Goes to Work”) and local garage punk outfit The Pussy Dogs plus DJ Jonny Snot (aka Horizontal Action’s resident DJ) and you’ve got a lineup that bleeds red, white, and blue. Philadelphia Sound Konnoisseurs at Voyeur July 3

Voyeur will host Philadelphia Sound Konnoisseurs tonight as part of The Roots presenting Philly’s 4th of July Jam as well as being the official Making Time after-party. The lineup of handpicked tastemakers will be taking over multiple rooms throughout the nightclub. Mad Decent founder, DJ, producer, and world-traveling tweeter Diplo will be back in town to see what kind of trouble he can get into in Philly or should I say get Philly into. DJ Jazzy Jeff and ?uestlove, who is also quite the world-traveling tweeter himself, teamed up for the first time at last month’s Roots Picnic and will share the stage again this evening, now coining their collaboration with the moniker Magnificent Love. Judging from the duo’s debut picnic performance, you can expect a journey through their vast knowledge of hip-hop/R&B hits-story and deep cuts. West Coast’s J Rocc and New York’s DJ Spinna will also be controlling the club’s turntables to keep the dance party going long after you may not. Young Gliss and Kuf Knotz Ready to Jam at TLA July 3

If The Roots plan on hijacking your next two days in Philly, then it just makes sense to bring more hip hop into your life tonight at the Theatre of Living Arts. Local young buck Young Gliss will be holding things down for his cuz-o Questo. Young Gliss recently released the sequel to his debut, which is titled Dealing With The Pressure 2, so expect plenty of new tracks. He’ll also be unveiling a new collaboration called “Falling” tonight with West Philly’s Chill Moody. Philly hip hop staple and XPN favorite Kuf Knotz has been called on to bring some peace, love and good vibes to the big stage of the TLA this evening. He’ll be dropping some “boombox logic” to get the crowd in the mood for tomorrow night’s 4th of July Jam. Both homegrown emcees will be sharing the bill with up-and-coming Left Coast indie artists Dom Kennedy and Casey Veggies as well as local spitter Dosage. Making Time “You’re Welcome America” Rad-B-Q at Bamboo Bar July 3

Though it may feel like Wawa has taken over 4th of July WEEK in Philly, Making Time “You’re Welcome America” Rad-B-Q is here to bring us that non-family-friendly party that we really wish would be happening on the Ben Franklin Parkway. Instead, Dave P and his army of DJs will be laying down the radness at Bamboo Bar this evening, and there will be live performances by London’s electro-noise punk trio T3ETH (Moshi Moshi Records), LA’s Puro Instinct (Mexican Summer), the 80’s synth-pop throwback of scholar John Maus, and LA’s Geneva Jacuzzi (a.k.a. Geneva Garvin). There will also be FREE PBR and fishbowl drink specials from 6 – 8pm (Sailor Jerry Rum specials all night long), grilling by PYT, Little Baby’s Ice Cream, swimming, and as always spectacular visuals from Klip Collective’s Ricardo Rivera. FREE Mercer Street Block Party July 3

If you’re looking for a block party with a packed lineup of up-and-coming local acts this Fourth of July Weekend, then you’ll find you’re hook up at Enemies Central today courtesy of Cloud Entertainment. House band Conversations with Enemies will most likely give you a preview of tunes that they’ll be taking into the studio in August for their next album. Speaking of albums, grab a copy of Breakfast from garage-punk trio Bandname. It’s finally available on Bandcamp HERE for the affordable cost of “name your price.” They’ll be closing out the evening’s festivities. But don’t sleep on opener Tin Horses who recently released a very promising debut in American Radiance, and they’ll also be opening The War on Drugs Record Release Party on August 18 at Johnny Brenda’s so here’s your chance at a free sneak peek.
