New Music, Emerging from your Local Scene

North Philly’s Meek Mill recently dropped his new mixtape Dreamchasers as he preps his debut on Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group. The 2011 XXL Freshman once again teamed up with DJ Drama, and their latest features contributions from Rick Ross, Beanie Sigel, Young Chris, and many more. You can download Dreamchasers for free HERE.
The Peace Creeps, led by Richard Bush formerly of the critically-acclaimed new wave band The A’s, will be performing tomorrow at WXPN’s Free at Noon. They’ll be playing in support of their latest British Invasion-influenced sophomore album Time Machine. You can RSVP for the event HERE.
Check out the video footage of Dr. Dog from the last two years of touring accompanied by a live version of “Nobody Knows Who You Are”. The band is currently in the studio working on a new full-length album, the follow up to Shame Shame, which will be available early 2012.
There’s a special after-party for Spank Rock (a.k.a. Naeem Juwan) in the Ruby Lounge tonight at Voyeur (where anything goes) in honor of his homecoming stop on tour with Ke$ha at the Festival Pier. Juwan wanted to see all his friends, and Dave P is providing him the bash to do it. It’s FREE with performances from a special guest, Win Win, and a united Dave P& Sammy Slice so the only excuse you have is for your boss tomorrow morning. Ruby Lounge at Voyeur, 1221 St. James St. (far entrance at Camac St.), 10pm – 3:30am, FREE, 21+ (Photo by Amos Barshad) – H.M. Kauffman

(You can check out our review of their self-titled EP HERE.) There will be a $3 Sixpoint beer special from 9 – 10pm. Screening will start at 10pm, and Faux Slang & the BITBY crew will be spinning tunes all night.

Strand of Oaks (a.k.a. Timothy Showalter and now Joe Lazas on guitar & Deven Craige on bass) recently announce North American tour dates supporting Crooked Fingers. The trio will make their Philly debut on Wednesday, November 2 at Johnny Brenda’s (hopefully with Pattern Is Movement’s Chris Ward on drums). You can check out the rest of their tour schedule below.
This is crazy! But we are not surprised. According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Trocadero Theatre has filed for bankruptcy protection requesting “to obtain a breathing spell from creditors while it negotiates a restructuring of its debts”. Owner, Joanna Pang, noted that the high pay out to Ticketmaster for every show combined with declining ticket sales and litigation costs (that are not related) has affected the venue’s cash flow. You can read the rest of the article HERE or check out the petition (index number: US BC E.Pa. 11-16432). Oh Ticketbastard, will your reign of terror ever end!?!
Honus Honus, a.k.a. Ryan Kattner, recently took a break from filming the upcoming Man Man music video in a desert in California for an interview with us by phone about his latest project, Mister Heavenly. By now, you should already know that Kattner’s new band mates consist of fellow indie rock veterans, Nick Thorburn (Unicorns/Islands) and Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse/The Shins). The group’s charming debut album, Out Of Love, is available today via Sub Pop. (You can read the review of our August Album of the Month HERE.) We had a chance to talk with Kattner about doom wop, the difficulties of analog recording, the group’s connection with actor Michael Cera, and much more HERE.
Work Drugs just made the stems for their debut song “Third Wave” available for remixing. You can grab them HERE so feel free to add your own flava to the track. Have fun!
