Five Years of Music at Johnny Brenda’s This September!

Posted on:

This September marks the five year anniversary of Johnny Brenda’s as a music venue. To celebrate, the good folks at JB’s will be presenting special concerts every Friday and Saturday evening beginning Friday, September 16 through Saturday, October 1. There will be local acts like Work Drugs, Purples (members of the Teeth), White Birds, Meg Baird, Watery Love, Blood Feathers, Like a Fox and Dry Feet as well as acclaimed touring bands, such as Ted Leo & The Pharmacists (two shows – which also includes a rare All Ages Matinee on Sept. 24), J. Viewz, Jenny Owens Young and Home Blitz as part of the festivities. Come out and celebrate how JB’s has changed the landscape of the Philly music scene over the last five years (and hopefully many more to come)!

Archer Spade Pushing Boundaries at Highwire Gallery Sept. 8

Posted on:

Archer Spade is an unlikely duo compromised of Philly music veterans, world-reknowned klezmer trombonists Daniel Blacksberg and demon shredder Nick Millevoi. The combination has previously performed in seemingly every possible genre ranging from rock to jazz to chamber-pop and traditional Jewish music, as well as in Deli fave the Hassidic punk band Electric Simcha. They’re latest project creates a unique blend of their previous musical endeavors as they push the boundaries of their expansive musical knowledge and abilities. Also on the bill are Swedish born multi-instrumentalist Helena Espvall (Espers) and Brooklyn experimental/improv group, Mary Halvorson/Weasel Walter/Peter Evans Trio. Highwire Gallery 2040 Frankford Ave., $6, 7:30 pm, All AgesDan Brightcliffe

Univox 7” Release Party at KFN Sept. 7

Posted on:

Incendiary art rockers Univox are celebrating their new self-released 7” Tonight with a FREE show at Kung Fu Necktie. I really can’t get enough of the band’s truly unique songs with their vocal harmonies sculpting epic tales filled with anthemic pop hooks that simply make me uncontrollably wail out lyrics as I ferociously jump up and down pumping my fist (and that’s just alone in my room). Univox will be joined by sinister post-punk outfit The Bad Doctors (whose Luke Nally created a club party-starter with his “Tonight” remix) and emo rockers Everyone Everywhere. Hopefully the Crystal Visions crew will give Nally’s version a spin tonight during their after-party when they unload a blend of 60s/70s psych rock on the crowd. You can check out the A- & B-sides of the 7” below to get your vocals and fist-pumping warmed up. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Frankford Ave., 8pm, FREE, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Future of Bookspace as a Music Venue Pending

Posted on:

Sorry folks for the website being down yesterday so we have a little catching up to do today. First off, we started seeing the rumors about the beloved Bookspace possibly being shutdown at the end of last week in the Twitter Universe as well as speculations from Philebrity and The A.V. Club Philly surfacing yesterday. Well, below is an update from The A.V. Club Philly that they received from Bookspace co-owner Ben Orlick.

Not shutdown completely– as of now the bookstore remains open our normal hours.  We have temporarily stopped hosting shows for now as we await further details from the city–we haven’t gotten any paperwork from them yet, so it’s hard to elaborate much at this point, but we’ll definitely be taking care of whatever is necessary to resume other activities.  I’ll keep you posted in the next couple days as the details evolve.

Obviously, we hope for the best for the space and its kind peeps who help keep it going. In the meantime, swing on by and purchase some items to show your support. (Photo by David Turcotte)

Photo Recap: 215 Magazine/Vitamin Water Uncapped Live Showcase w/Sun Airway & Work Drugs

Posted on:

We made it out to the 215 Magazine/Vitamin Water Uncapped Live showcase with Sun Airway and Work Drugs this past Saturday. Corporate promotional events are usually a hit or miss, especially in relation to the bands and their audiences. We have to give mad props to the artists. It’s rather difficult for them to perform in a room where it seems at least half of the crowd is more interested in the free booze. We had a blast either way. We hope that they did too. It’s always a treat to see bands that you really dig for free. And throw in some free alcohol – forgettaboutit! The venue was very accommodating – though we think that all who attended could agree that we could have used a little less Vitamin Water decorations (and definitely without the cheesy V-shaped wannabe metal guitars). It kind of felt like a marketing company threw up all over the venue. The sound also unfortunately had its issues, but the bands still put on enjoyable performances. All in all – the event was a success. Fun was definitely had. And you can’t really hate on the price as well as the talent that you had a chance to experience. You can check out some of our photos from the evening HERE.

Creepoid & Psychic Teens Play Host at D!D!G Sept. 6

Posted on:

RAD SHOW ALERT! Tonight Creepoid will be invading West Philly at the Danger! Danger! Gallery along with the very promising young local post-punk outfit Psychic Teens. You should be familiar with the grunge-y psychedelic folk foursome already. Some Creepoid news – there are plans in the works for them to release a split release with the band Shores via No Idea Records. (BTW: If you rock, hit up Creepoid drummer Pat Troxell about hopping on one of his Phonographic Arts showcases.) Now, Psychic Teens is a relatively new trio that seems to have also grown up on a steady diet of the dark and gloomy music that dominated my high school years. They recently won The Deli’s Featured Artist(s) Poll, and if you haven’t downloaded their FREE tracks yet HERE, then you need to right now. Both Philly crews will be hosting out of towners Vaz (who features ex-members of Hammerhead) as well as Pygmy Lush and Pygmy Shrew. Yes, two bands with the word “pygmy” in their name on the same bill – what are the odds? Or is this another indie band name trend? Well, get to D!D!G early for the locals, but stay for the imports. Danger! Danger! Gallery, 5013 Baltimore Ave., 8pm, $5 – $10 donation, All Ages – Alexis V.
