Weathervane Music Showcase at World Café Live Sept. 23

Posted on:

Weathervane Music is hosting a showcase this evening at World Café Live. Brian McTear has brought together some fine acts that have graced his Miner Street studio. It will feature local folk hero Hezekiah Jones (a.k.a. Raph Cutrufello), who will be joined by his merry musical family of Joneses, and Brooklyn songbird via Jersey via Tennessee via Jersey Sharon Van Etten, a Deli NYC favorite who recently signed to Jagjaguwar and has been captivating the music world with her effortlessly mellifluous vocals and beautifully polished songwriting. Both are Shaking Through alumni. Folk pop princess Marissa Nadler (McTear produced her latest eponymous fifth full-length album) will also be joining them. The showcase is part of the Philly F/M Fest, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit Weathervane Music. World Café Live, 3025 Walnut St., 8pm, $19 – $24, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

Photo Recap: Union Transfer Grand Opening w/Clap Your Hand Say Yeah & Policia

Posted on:

There was certainly a buzz in the air and the interweb on Wednesday. The Clap Your Hand Say Yeah show was sold out at Union Transfer for the release of their first album in four years, but the vibe at the new R5, Bowery Presents, and 4CM venue was that the majority of the people were actually more interested to see what had become of the old Spaghetti Warehouse than who was performing that evening. There were plenty of friends, artists, fans, and in the indiestry folks roaming the spacious place who were there to congratulate local area DIY punk kid done good Sean Agnew, who had been vacuuming the place up until the doors opened, as well as corporate music big wigs checking out the competition. But UT was full of smiles and friendly faces ready to drink and hear how Clap Your Hand Say Yeah and opener Policia sounded through its new killer sound system. You can take a look at our photos of the momentous occasion HERE.

New POPPED! Fest Schedule and Message

Posted on:

Below is a message from POPPED! and the new schedule of performers (please note that the set times and artist line-up are subject to change).

We understand everyone’s concern for the move, and we are working around the clock to ensure POPPED will be a great event for all. The event is still general admission. There will still be a VIP area, sponsored by Vita Coco, featuring a separate entrance, separate bar area restroom facilities and premium seat locations so all VIP tickets will be honored. Due to the relocation from an outside venue to the Liacouras Center, unfortunately we are no longer able to accommodate the specialty Food Trucks for the Food Bazaar but the Liacouras Center will be operating with all normal concessions and bars open.

Free Download: “Ancient Drum” – Former Belle

Posted on:

Former Belle recently went into the studio with their good friend Farzad Houshiarnejad (White Birds/ex-Drink Up Buttercup), who recorded and mixed their latest track “Ancient Drum”. It’s more experimental in production and song structure than the radio-friendly pop morsels found on their debut EP Sounds From the Ground, but with Bruno Joseph’s lead vocals, hooks, and subject matter, it doesn’t stray far from something that could still get some spins on the radio. You can take a listen to “Ancient Drum” and download it for free below.

Philly F/M Fest Kicks Off w/Philly Slick & MH the Verb at 2424 Studios Sept. 22

Posted on:

The sophomore run of the Philly F/M Festival kicks off this year with a hip hop showcase at 2424 Studios’ Skybox tonight. For six years running, Philadelphia Slick has been thrilling crowds with their impressive live performances. Last year’s opus Everything’s Game featured supercharged tracks like “Daily Dose”and “Everything Must Go”. They plan on unveiling a massive Kickstarter campaign once their Spit Pro Quo Tour comes to an end so it looks like the band is showing no signs of slowing down. In a short amount of time MH the Verb has managed to gain an ample amount of praise from the likes of The Roots and Kid Cudi. And now that the flourishing MC/Producer is backed by an all-star live band and a new album on the horizon, he’s shaping up to be another artist on the rise in the Philly music scene. The Skybox at 2424 Studios, 2424 E. York St., 7pm, $10 (includes a free beer for 21+), All Ages – Bill McThrill

FYI on DIYs in PHL: Phonographic Arts & Little Bar

Posted on:

With the more northern parts of Philly already establishing themselves as the “epicenter” of the local music scene over the last few years and West Philly’s music scene always being an interesting and unique breed of animal unto itself (but often being so goddamn far from everywhere else), where are inhabitants of South Philly to go to consistently get their music fix near their hood? Well, the guys behind Phonographic Arts now have your answer. Thanks to the Little Bar. We had a chance to chat and share a hand-rolled cigarette with Phonographic Arts founder Cliff Shumaker, his partner Pat Troxell (who if you didn’t know already is also Creepoid’s drummer), and Little Bar owner Michael D’Addesi to find out more about their plans to bring music to South Philly (hell, Philly in general) and their close-knit little family happily working to make it happen HERE.

Posted on:

Woah bummer! But at least we won’t be getting soaked (something that we were honestly not looking forward to).

Due to forecasted weather conditions and possible flooding at FDR Park the POPPED! Festival has been moved to Temple’s Liacouras Center (1176 N. Broad St.). All previous purchased tickets will be honored, and tickets for the Liacouras Center are on sale now through Ticketbastard.
