Young Statues Opening for Now, Now at JBs Oct. 20

Posted on:

There’s something about youthful defiance I cannot resist. Not that Young Statues is particularly rebellious but the bi-state outfit’s brand of whimsically angsty and foolishly idealistic indie rock recalls moments of drowsy dreaminess and carefree abandon that I can’t help but become nostaglic about the high school years of yore. Their self-titled debut, which drops November 8 on Run For Cover Records, is saturated with that feeling of the sweethearts’ breakup–the block in time where all that young love has washed into teary-eyed depression and creativity. And since winter is coming, it may be wise for you to relive your youth in Johnny Brenda’s warmth, where Young Statues will open for Now, Now and Mansions. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Psychic Teens Opening for Zola Jesus at FUC Oct. 20

Posted on:

Psychic Teens will be setting things off at the Church tonight for headliner, Zola Jesus, with their unique, noisy blend of experimental post-punk. The three-piece recently won our Featured Artist(s) Poll, after catching reader’s attention with their debut digital single back in the summer, including “Yung,” with its gloomy bass line and raw guitar work, and “CbbK,” which show the groups more experimental side. (You can download both tracks for free HERE.) Psychic Teens are currently putting the final touches on their follow-up, debut full-length scheduled to be released later this month. So be sure to head down to the Church to check out one of Philly’s most promising up -and-coming new acts. BTW: Check out a video that was filmed by our pals at BITBY of the band stripped-down backstage at Kung Fu Necktie below. Lady Album Release Party at PhilaMOCA Oct. 20

Posted on:

Since their earliest inception, Kate Foust and the other members of Lady have time-warped us back to the good ole days with their vibrant mix of soulful blues and jazz. Each member of the quintet is classically trained, and they have previously collaborated with the likes of Toy Soldiers, Virtual Virgin, The Divine Lorraine, and many others. After an impressive debut EP the band set out to record its first full-length You & Me under Ropeadope with the help of Studio 4’s Phil Nicolo, and they’ll be celebrating its release at PhilaMOCA tonight by performing the whole album in its entirety and unveiling a few new songs. Lady will be joined by good pals Toy Soldiers who just hit Bloktoberfest and CMJ, and are getting ready to throwdown at The Note next week for the Halloween Hoedown with Hoots & Hellmouth. Mike Bell & The Movies Record Release Show & Tour Kickoff at KFN Oct. 20

Posted on:

Mike Bell just dropped his new album today the self-deprecatingly titled The World’s Most Unremarkable Man. He’ll be backed by his compadres The Movies tonight when he headlines the dome-shaped stage at Kung Fu Necktie with his joyfully riffs and humdrum vocals. It will be the kickoff to his East Coast Tour. Joining them this evening will be the rock-folk trio Hop Along led by Frances Quinlan’s gorgeously intimidating vocals and upbeat, glass-half-empty indie popsters Little Black Rainclouds, which features members of Dangerous Ponies. The Deli’s Featured Artist(s) Winners: Ecomog

Posted on:

We enjoy asking the artists that we interview about local acts that they are into. It’s sometimes a good way to discover underground artists that have been flying under our radar, which is how we discovered Ecomog. The crew made up of Entity, Epidemic, and Tonik aims to preserve the rich heritage of hip hop while also aspiring to help it to move forward. Such is the cycle and evolution of music. You can check out our interview with Ecomog HERE, or just swing by Millcreek Tavern this Friday, October 21 to really find out what they are all about.

Dragon King Opening for Unknown Mortal Orchestra at JB’s Oct. 19

Posted on:

Since starting out as a studio project between guitarist/songwriter Dominic Angelella and producer Ritz Reynolds in late 2010, Dragon King has evolved into the majestic indie quartet that they are today. And while their debut full-length Paragraph Nights comes closer and closer to being released, you’ll have a chance to experience what I am sure are the ever-evolving tunes in a live setting when they takeover the stage tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. I am sure the learned guitar licks of Angelella will mesh nicely with the mysteriously quirky genius of Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Ruban Nielson. There should be plenty of attendees gettin’ down this evening. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Shaking Through w/ Creepoid

Posted on:

The new Shaking Through episode features one of our favorite bands Creepoid as well as some awesome folks who add so much to the Philly music scene! The project was curated by R5’s Sean Agnew. Kyle “Slick” Johnson (Wavves, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Rogue Wave, etc.) also was the guest producer, and provided his usual brand of comic relief. You can check out some video footage from the session and the fruits of their labor “Old Tree,” which is also available for free download, below. Enjoy!

DJ ?uestlove Opening for Little Dragon & Tycho at Union Transfer Oct. 18

Posted on:

?uestlove was recently added to tonight’s already fantabulous lineup at Union Transfer. Now, I shouldn’t have to really convince anyone who lives in Philly why you should come out this evening and give our fine froed friend a little local love. But I would like to take the opportunity to give some to Sweden’s Little Dragon. I did happen to catch ?uesto raving about them on Twitter when they debuted on Fallon so I checked them out, and they lived up to the hype. It was such a mesmerizing performance that it actually made me come early to The Roots Picnic to catch their set at 1:30pm, which is definitely a big deal when I need to stick around for nine or ten hours drinking seven dollar beers to see the final acts, Man Man and Nas. (BTW: Live Nation, I know that you probably don’t care, but pssst…press folks will definitely have nicer things to say about your events if you allow them re-entry. Just glad that I was able to sneak in my trusty little Jameson bottle to help pass the time. :o) San Francisco sound artist Tycho (a.k.a. Scott Hansen) should provide plenty of swirling soundscapes to help warm you up for this evening’s imported headliner. Union Transfer, 1024 Spring Garden St., 8pm, $15 -$17, All Ages – Q.D. Tran

New Track: “Make My” (Feat. Big K.R.I.T.) – The Roots

Posted on:

As promised, The Roots just “leaked” the first single from their upcoming album undun called “Make My,” which features Big K.R.I.T. The LP is scheduled to drop December 6 via Island Def Jam. It’s the band’s first conceptually-based album as explained in their press release.

undun is an existential re-telling of the short life of one Redford Stephens (1974-1999). Through the use of emotives and Redford’s internal dialogues the album seeks to illustrate the intersection of free will and prescribed destiny as it plays out ‘on the corner’. Utilizing a reverse narrative arc, the album begins as the listener finds Redford disoriented-postmortem – and attempting to make sense of his former life. As he moves through its pivotal moments he begins to deconstruct all that has led to his (and our own) coming undun.

You can check out “Make My” below as well as the rest of the album’s track list.
