South Street’s Tritone to Close

Posted on:

We are sad to hear that Tritone will be closing. We’ve had some fun and strange times in the little red room. Foobooz broke the news earlier today. They also received updates from Tritone’s owner Dave Rogers and Chris Fetfatzes, who owns South Philly’s Hawthorne Café and has entered into an agreement to purchase the place which is pending on the approval of the liquor license transfer. According to the updates, Foobooz reported Fetfatzes (who had originally declined to comment on the article) said that “there are a few different concepts he is working on for the space, none of which involve a focus on live music. But, he adds, that doesn’t mean he will phase out music completely.” They also received comments from Rogers after the piece was posted that “he’s already received a dozen calls and emails from bands wondering if their gigs are canceled. The answer is no. Rogers says he expects to be open for at least 3 more months and that any shows currently on the calendar are staying there.” So there you have it. Sucks. (You can read the rest of the post HERE.) But at least we still have Bob n’ Barbara’s – our (citywide) special home away from the rest of the world. Just sometimes wish they’d put on more shows there. We’d definitely be down with doing a showcase.

Ladies Auxiliary Opening for Gauntlet Hair at KFN Oct. 24

Posted on:

Ladies Auxiliary will be bringing their lo-fi, yet highly textured mix of country rock balladry and AM radio pop to Kung Fu Necktie. They should fit in nicely alongside lo-fi experimental duo Gauntlet Hair (Dead Oceans) as well as Krautrock revivalists Music for Headphones (XD Records). Yes, psychedelics would definitely be a good idea for this lineup. Get their early because Ladies Auxiliary will be opening the evening. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Alexis V.

Inaugural Showcase of the “Still Life” Series at FUC – Side Chapel Oct. 24

Posted on:

John Vettese (XPN2, The Key, City Paper) is a great supporter of the local music scene and music in general. Well, this evening will be the debut of his “Still Life” series. The event will showcase experimental/ambient music from the Philly area. Tonight at the Side Chapel of the First Unitarian Church will feature Cough Cool, Dan Malloy, and Brendan Codey. Vettese has been working with Malloy to digitize ten years worth of his home recorded bedroom tapes so this evening will also be sort of a release show for it, and expect for the material to be up on Bandcamp very soon. So go out, puff some herb (preferably with all who are involved), and just chill. It’ll definitely be a good way to begin the week. Side Chapel of the First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 7pm, $8, All Ages – Q.D. Tran

Attia Taylor & Oh! Pears Making Magic at M Room Oct. 23

Posted on:

I love when two of my favorite local musicians play the same show. There’s an awesome comradeship that’s present in the music, and I expect nothing less when Attia Taylor and Oh! Pears take the stage tonight at the M Room. Taylor’s music is always innovative, raw and futuristically vintage, while Oh! Pears, who recently performed at this year’s CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival for a day party at The Living Room, is always boldly abstract, voluminously bittersweet, and wholly encompassing. I highly suspect magic will be in the air. M Room, 15. W. Girard, 8pm, $7, 21+ – Annamarya Scaccia

Creepoid Opening for The Jacuzzi Boys and Pujol at KFN Oct. 23

Posted on:

Local favorites Creepoid will be bringing their grungy-psych-folk sounds to Kung Fu Necktie in support of The Jacuzzi Boys and Pujol (who both just completed a bunch of shows at CMJ). The four-piece was recently selected as the October artist for Weathervane Music and XPN’s Shaking Through program, which gives independent acts a chance to record their music with expensive equipment in studios they normally would not have access to. Creepoid’s session was curated by R5’s Sean Agnew and produced by Kyle “Slick” Johnson (producer for Horse Heaven). The session laid down a proper recording of the group’s latest song, “Old Tree,” which you can download for free below and you can also watch the behind the scenes footage of the group in the studio HERE. So be sure to head down to KFN tonight to hear “Old Tree” live along with more new material that they’ve been working on. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., $10, 8 pm, 21+Dan Brightcliffe

Weekend Warrior, October 21 – 23

Posted on:

Dream-punkers Acid Kicks are having a record release party for their 7” Life Dreams this Saturday night at Little Berlin. By now, you should know that the four-piece is made up of 3 bassists and a drummer (with occasional wails and dissonant trumpet accents), which may sound like the beginning of joke about musicians, but the joke will be on you if you don’t come tomorrow night to the DIY art space. They’ll be joined by South Philly psych rock outfit True Gold, who will be releasing a split album with Acid Kicks in the near future via Phonographic Arts, Mindless Attack, and a solo set by Al Creedon (Reading Rainbow, Swimmers Ear). Come underground and live the punk dream! Little Berlin, 2430 Coral St., 8pm, All Ages – Alexis V.

Free Energy Returns to Making Time for The Rapture at Voyeur Oct. 21

Posted on:

After exploding onto the Philly and national music scene, it has been pretty quiet in the Free Energy camp (except for a handful of big shows), which has been most likely due to their search for a permanent new guitarist with the exodus of Geoffrey Bucknum this past spring. Well, the boys are back at Making Time tonight, and it should definitely be a hyper-rager when they party down with The Rapture (performing at their fourth MT), Metronomy, Class Actress, and Still Corners. This evening will make your decision to skip CMJ a very wise one. Voyeur, 1221 St. James St., 9pm – 4am, $15, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Rock to the Future Open House

Posted on:

As it heads into its second year, Rock to the Future, the organization that provides free music education and academic assistance to underprivileged youth, has made some admirable strides towards improving our community. In this short amount of time, it has gained its non-profit status, has had its students perform showcases on stages like World Café Live, and is officially moving into a brand new performance space on East Cumberland Street in Fishtown. The organization will be celebrating the new space in style today by hosting its very first Open House. As you tour the space and check out its impressive mural, you will be able to enjoy refreshments, hear about RTTF’s success stories, and check out student bands and local musicians as they perform each hour. You will also be able to learn more about the fundraiser drive that they’re doing for this 2011-2012 season. So come out and learn a little bit more about them and show your support HERE! Rock to the Future, 2139 E. Cumberland St. – 2nd Floor, 4pm – 8pm, All Ages – Bill McThrill
