Little Berlin Benefit w/Bleeding Rainbow, Nothing & Little Big League at Little Berlin Dec. 10

Posted on:

The folks at Little Berlin are throwing a killer benefit show tonight for their newly relocated space (awww, but I do miss their old porch for the bands). It will feature the debut of a rad, new local band called Bleeding Rainbow. Ha…actually, if you haven’t been keeping up on your blog reading and Twitter, that’s the name Reading Rainbow will be going by from now on. (You can follow them at their new Tumblr and Twitter accounts.) Shoegaze-y outfit Nothing should have some new material to share this evening since they’ll be releasing a new EP early next year. You’ll get a glimpse of what Post Post’s Michelle Zauner has been working on lately with her new band Little Big League which includes former fellow bandmate Kevin O’Halloran on guitar, Deven Craige (Golden Ages, Strand of Oaks) on bass, and Ian Dykstra (Titus Andronicus) on drums. Rounding out the lineup will be Rain Season and Tank. There will also be Little Berlin’s “very own signature cocktails” available – “the kind that’ll get you feelin REAL fuzzy, REAL quick.” Now, I definitely love the sound of that! “LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL.” Little Berlin, 2430 Coral St., 6pm, $6, All Ages – Alexis V.

Kung Fu Necktie will be hosting another rare big show tonight. The recently reunited Dead Milkmen will be throwing down for their The King in Yellow album release party. They plan on performing the album in its entirety “with limited commercial interruptions,” which we can only hope to mean that we’ll be getting to hear some fan favorites like “Punk Rock Girl” and “Big Lizard in My Backyard.” Unfortunately, the show is sold out, and their ticket giveaway via their Twitter account is over. However, all ticket holders will be rewarded by receiving a download card for a free copy of The King in Yellow. Best of luck to the hometown punk legends on their latest album! Steve Goldberg and the Arch Enemies CD Release Show at JB’s Dec. 10

Posted on:

For their ambitious third album The Flood, Steve Goldberg and the Arch Enemies set out to create a major production that featured a HUGE ensemble of drums, bass, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, vocals, more vocals, violin, viola, cello, piano, trombone, trumpet, clarinet, flute, glockenspiel, handclaps, and various other percussive pieces. The bulk of it was recorded between Turtle Studios and Sweden in Northern Liberties, and the end result is a beautiful 5-song baroque pop EP that gives Goldberg and his friends/enemies much to celebrate and they’ll be doing just that tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. Joined them will be the indie pop orchestral arrangements of Cory Duncan’s ambitious project Oh! Pears who most recently kicked it with the BITBY crew for their fourth monthly episode. The show will also be opened by the always whimsical Arrah & the Ferns who are back from the road where they were supporting their new EP Soldier Ghost. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Monster Entertainment Holiday Party at MilkBoy Philly Dec. 10

Posted on:

You can’t deny it — the holiday season always brings about a certain youthful nostalgia of snowball fights and lazy snow days. Even the hearts of us ex-retail workers who suffered through too many early mornings hawking needless products get a little misty during the season. And, honestly, there’s no better way to relive our winter youth than getting totally merry and totally sloshed with our friends at the Monster Entertainment Holiday Party tonight at MilkBoy Philly. The show will feature a slew of locals, including young-at-heart indie rock-pop rebels, Young Statues, whose enthusiastic, youthful self-titled debut recalls the pain of young love (they’re gearing up for a tour starting in March, so look out for them on the road) , the blues-meets-roots rock enthusiasts Toy Soldiers, the brash, fierce indie rock melodies of the Quelle Source, who recently released their The French Rapture EP and were nominated for Y-Not Radio’s Best Philly Artist of 2011 category, and Revolution, I Love You, who also recently released their debut LP We Choose to Go to the MoonMilkBoy Philly, 1100 Chestnut St., 8pm, $10-$12, 21+ – Annamarya Scaccia

Free Showcase for Jonas Oesterle’s 30th Birthday Celebration at The Fire Dec. 9

Posted on:

If you’ve been to The Fire over the past 8 years then you’ve probably encountered the positive vibes of Jonas Oesterle (Purples, The Teeth, Flashy Python, etc.) as he’s worked there in one capacity or another. Tonight he’ll be celebrating his 30th Birthday at the club, and you’ll be welcomed to join him during a FREE show that will feature an eclectic assortment of entertainment. While Alison Wadsworth acts as master of ceremonies, Matt Helm will roast the crowd with his comedic stylings, and Obidiah Bones will deliver a jamming folk session that will be complete with plenty of instrumental solos. But the incendiary retro jazz beats will be coming from Circadian Rhythms who recently released their LP A Dream or Something Else. If you caught them when they celebrated their vinyl release during our Halloween Bash, then you know that the band can deliver an energy-filled set that will get you moving, and tonight will be no exception, especially when DJs Spano, Hansel, and Natty Ice feed off those good vibrations! The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave., 9pm, Free, 21+ – Bill McThrill

“Still Life” Series w/Tadoma, Gemini Wolf & Gina Ferrera at FUC – Side Chapel Dec. 9

Posted on:

Philly music enthusiast John Vettese returns tonight to the Side Chapel of the First Unitarian Church with his second installation of “Still Life.” It’s a music series that focuses on showcasing experimental/ambient music from the Philly area. Vettese is very excited to bring you tonight’s lineup. Sound sculptor Tadoma (a.k.a. Joe Patitucci) will be matching the weather outside with his super chill Brian Eno-esque soundscapes while the “two-headed musical monster” Gemini Wolf consisting of singer Pandar (a.k.a. Megan Pandar Cauley) and Mikronesia (a.k.a. Michael McDermott) will be filling the tiny chapel with ethereal vocals and futuristic doomsday atmospherics. They’ll also be joined by Gina Ferrera who conjures up primal poly-rhythmic beats to create her unique blend of electronic dance music. Prepare for them to start the party in your minds. Side Chapel – First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 7pm, $8, All Ages – Alexis V.

Local pop punk five-piece Vintage Kicks will be celebrating the release of their debut full-length King Geek (which you can download for free HERE) with a record release party at Dobbs tonight. The 10-track album includes stop and go anthemic riffs coupled with indie rock vocals. The band’s music is inspired by a unique combination of diverse acts like The Strokes, The Beach Boys, Devo, and Blink182. Chill Moody Bringing It Back at The Rotunda Dec. 9

Posted on:

Tonight Love Us is presenting “Heartbeats” at The Rotunda, featuring a performance from one of West Philly’s own up-and-coming emcees Chill Moody. Moody’s microphone skills has been compared to some of the finest hip hop lyricists of the modern era such as Common and Black Thought. His latest mixtape wESTchilly has been making people take notice, which lead to Moody being asked to collaborate with Roots affiliates Truck North and Young Gliss. Chill Moody is a rising emcee in Philly’s hip hop community trying to bring back the focus on “lyrics and substance” in a genre that often gets overrun by trends.
