The Lawsuits – Not Just a Retro Act at KFN Feb. 24

Posted on:

Kung Fu Necktie will be hosting a slice of Americana/roots rock tonight featuring local artists The Lawsuits and Ron Gallo alongside People’s Blues of Richmond (VA). The Lawsuits sound has its root’s deep in the tradition of American folk, bluegrass and the blues – similar to 60s acts like the Band and Bob Dylan. However, their recent work has proven that they are definitely not just a retro act. Earlier this month, the group teamed up with South Philly’s HotBox Studios to film an in-studio performance of their entertainingly titled new track “Hot Girl Makes Porno” (Dylan never wrote about porn stars!) which goes from a banjo-based folk song into somewhat of a punk influenced chorus, creating an interesting twist on the American folk tradition. They also had a HotBox performance which featured a collaboration with pals and up-and-coming hip hop outfit Ground Up – for their Tracy Chapman sampled track “Turn Around.” The Lawsuits are planning to release a new EP Hot Love later this spring. Also on the bill is Toy Soldiers’ frontman Ron Gallo performing songs from his catalogue of solo albums from 2006 to 2009. Kung Fu Necktie 1250 N. Front Street, $5, 7:30 pm, 21+ Dan Brightcliffe

Where Is My Mind?: Bandname

Posted on:

You can learn a lot or nothing at all from a band’s name. So what does the band name Bandname mean to you? (Yes, we got the spelling of their name all cleared up.) It’s pretty simple to figure out that the power trio of Jeremy Jams on guitar, Cat Park on bass and Greg Labold on skins enjoys a good laugh. The band(name) is performing a show tonight at PiLam with pals Algernon Cadwallader and Teen Cool Kids. Their split 7-inches with Shat Shorts and Hot Mess will also be available for the first time this evening, and expect a 3-song EP coming out later this year via Evil Weevil Records. Check out what has meaning to Bandname and what really doesn’t HERE

Little Bar Closed & Will No Longer Be a Music Venue!

Posted on:

The saga continues for Little Bar, but it looks like the end for the once promising South Philly music venue. According to City Paper’s Meal Ticket, owner Michael D’Addesi has decided to close the bar, and plans to leave the bar biz to attend law school in North Carolina. All this happened after PVP, who had been handling the booking there after things went sour with Phonographic Arts, decided to suddenly quit last weekend. They’ll be moving their events to Teri’s (where they’ll be permanently booking) and JR’s. All pending shows at Little Bar are cancelled, and D’Addesi stated that “the new tenants are going in the neighborhood bar/restaurant direction, so no more music venue.” No word about who the new owners will be yet. We can’t say that we are surprised at all by this recent outcome.

Final Rockers! Show at Tritone Feb. 22

Posted on:

For nearly five years the Mighty Paradocs have brought their celebration of Rockers! to the Tritone stage. The event has always given bands that add a message to their musical mayhem an opportunity to jam to their hearts content. And it even found the time to serve up a special helping of spoken word, dancing, art, and more. While the band has assured that the event is far from over, tonight marks its final hurrah at the classic venue where it all began. Joining the Mighty Paradocs for one last time in the little red room on South St. will be familiar faces to the Rockers!’s stage. The National Rifle are taking a break from recording their full-length album this evening so they should have some new tunes for you as they finish up and get ready to embark on a spring tour. Between being a part of NYC/Philly’s the Kominas, lead gunslinger in Sunny Ali & the Kid, and one of the strangest tweeters that we follow, Hassan Ali Malik (a.k.a. Sunny Ali) seems to be doing his own thang, and tonight he’ll be taking the stage solo to pay his respects. Add in the soulful gospel punk of Baptist Preachers and the folk-y grunge rock of Sherman with specials guests Joe Jordan and DJ Evil V, and it will be a proper way for the Rockers! to close things out. Tritone, 1508 South St., 9pm, $5, 21+ – Bill McThrill
