New Video: New Black ® History (Documentary) – Asaad
Who is Asaad? Well, you’ll get to learn more about this year’s Deli Philly Fans’ Poll Winner from his candid documentary short film below New Black ® History. It was presented by Brain Bandits and shot/edited by Glassface.
Experience the Good & Bad of Crills Wilson at The Fire March 28
Crills Wilson possesses that good ol’ boy spirit that can be rather comforting. However, when you get him on stage with the rest of his band, those good ol’ boys play like they each just drank a fifth of Jack and you were hitting on their women. In other words, they are ready to fuck shit up! The band can get downright ornery and loud, but that also makes for an evening to remember – good or bad. Well, tonight they’ll be headlining at The Fire, and I’m going to put my money on the former. The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave., 9pm, $7, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman
Recap: Dr. Dog at E Factory (Tour Closer – March 25)
Road trips typically follow a pattern. At first, there’s an immense weight lifted from the travelers’ shoulders as the mundane burdens of everyday life temporarily take a backseat to the boundless possibilities that lay ahead. That came with my trip to Boston last Thursday to experience Dr. Dog at House of Blues for the first time outside of the Philly area. However, as the days pass, one begins to miss the comforts of home. With these things in mind, Dr. Dog completed its recent stint of tour dates promoting their latest album Be the Void with a pair of shows at the Electric Factory where I caught up with them again for the tour closer this past Sunday.
The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Hott Tubb
Local lo-fi electronica duo Hott Tubb is currently out on a mini-tour of the Northeast (not Philly). They’ll be in Boston tonight. The band recently won our Featured Artist(s) Poll, and was nice enough to answer our interview questions before they hit the road, which you can check out HERE. They’ll be back performing next in Philly on April 19 at Kung Fu Necktie opening for Mansions on the Moon, and look out for a new 7-inch coming out the last week of April.
Last Gods and Queens Show at KFN March 27
Sometimes the signs are all there for a band to know when to say “when.” After nearly dying in a van accident on their European tour this past November, being held by the Czech police until they paid off their hospital and towing bills, and going into thousands of dollars in debt and needing the help and generosity of the music community to bail them out, local indie punk outfit Gods and Queens is calling it quits. But the guys seem pretty excited for their last show where they’ll be opening for Grant Hart of Husker Du so come say goodbye to them at Kung Fu Necktie this evening and share a toast to “livin’.” Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Alexis V.
Update from the band’s Facebook Page: Tonight show at Kungfu Neck Tie has been canceled. No joke! The most absolute, perfectly fitting way for this band to end.
Jamie/Ben/asserted drummers.

Ground Up Headline at TLA March 24
It’s pretty crazy to see Ground Up featured on the marquee of the TLA. It just feels like yesterday that we discovered the hip hop collaborative in our Open Blog inbox. However, that was many free mixtapes ago. And the local crew has a new one entitled The Get Up to get people on their feet and movin’ (you can cop it HERE). It features contributions from Freeway, Young Chris, Reef the Lost Cauze, and many others. Hopefully Ground Up will have some guest appearances lined up for their set. We already know that Reef will be in the house heating up the crowd as an opener so expect him to join in on “Flippy Phones” from their latest. Also joining them on the bill is up-and-comer Young Savage. Come out and watch Philly hip hop burn down the big stage on South Street! TLA, 334 South St., $10 + fees, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman
Sweet Lights Opening for Polica at KFN March 24
Shai Halperin has already accomplished a lot as a musician and the former leader of The Capitol Years. Halperin and his band recorded a live session for BBC Radio, played the Glastonbury Festival, received high levels of praise from Rolling Stone and Pitchfork, and toured with the likes of the Pixies and Daniel Johnston (whom they also backed on tours). And The Capitol Years that featured members of Nightlands and The War on Drugs at certain points started out as Halperin playing every instrument on the first two albums. The artist went back to those roots for his latest project Sweet Lights, and it’s been all him for the “Endless Town” single and the self-titled debut that’s scheduled for release in April. He’ll also be going solo tonight for the SOLD OUT Polica show at Kung Fu Necktie. Some more tickets may be made available at the door though, so it’s recommended that you look into it pronto! Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 7:30pm, $10, 21+ – Bill McThrill
Weekend Warrior, March 23 – 25
Oh, Dr. Dog, how we’ve missed you while you were on tour in support of your new album for ANTI-, Be The Void. Sure, you needed to spread around its fantastic, bellowing, melodically mincing 12 tracks, but you were gone for far too long. At least, now we have you back for a little homecoming at the Electric Factory this weekend – a sold out show tomorrow with openers Purling Hiss, who, if you remember, is a total "raging erection of rock ‘n’ roll," and one on Sunday with openers Birds of Maya (Purling Hiss’ Mike Polizze’s other lover) who just showers you with their gritty, bones-bare pub sermons. The E Factory will be home to a good ole fashion party this weekend – Philly style. Electric Factory, 421 N. 7th St., SAT. SOLD OUT; SUN, 8:30pm, $23-$25, All Ages – Annamarya Scaccia
