Free Download: “Leap Year” – Prowler

Posted on:

Below is a new track from Prowler called “Leap Year.” It’s a rather chilled out offering compared to the usual spastic hyper-space funk jams that you are probably used to from the local five-piece. It’s available for free download below, and they also have freebies for their covers of INXS’ “Need You Tonight” and The Stooges’ “I Wanna Be Your Dog” HERE. (Photo by Chris Sembrot)

Wigwams Opening for Nada Surf at TLA April 9

Posted on:

If you were looking forward to catching Wigwams at Johnny Brenda’s this past Friday with Busses and Orbit to Leslie and were a bit bummed out about them dropping off the bill kind of last minute, then you now have a reason to get psyched and grab some tasty cheese fries from Ishkabibble’s. The local alt indie rock four-piece will be opening tonight at the TLA for 90’s alt rockers Nada Surf and Australian indie rock duo An Horse. I can’t guarantee that Wigwams will be whipping out the Gumby costume like they did last time they were in the joint opening for Battles on Halloween, but we can sure send out the positive vibes for them to do so. Or simply just harass them via Twitter. TLA, 334 South St., 7pm, $20 + fees, All Ages (Video by BITBY) – Alexis V.

Restorations Leaving Their Imprint at The Barbary April 8

Posted on:

Maybe it’s because I am child of the ’90s that I heart Restorations so much. Unlike most of the crap put in the mainstream, this is one local outfit that wraps itself so tightly around the passionate, bleeding heart melodies of the yesteryear’s indie rock – the overwhelming seduction of shoegaze interrogations, the breathless melancholy of campus rock beer stains, the ballsy behavior of reckless post-punk, and the story-telling missives of modern Americana. It’s sonic nostalgia that never seems out-dated. In every daring chord, in every dusky intone, in every pleading rhythm, there is Restorations’ imprint. And tonight at The Barbary, it will pair perfectly with Kite Party’s beating heart alt-rock and End of a Year Self Defense Family’s rusty New York post-hardcore shrills. Yup, that’s the stuff. The Barbary, 951 Frankford Ave., 7:30pm, $10, All Ages – Annamarya Scaccia

The Lawsuits EP Release Party at MilkBoy Philly April 7

Posted on:

The Lawsuits have been tantalizing us with their countrified folk rock with just a tinge of blues for a while now. So when I first learned that they were heading into Sigma Sound Studios to work on a new EP, I was ready for more of their music filled with good vibes. The end result is Hot Love, and songs like Baby, Don’t Go (which the band filmed their first official music video for, and you can view it below). Tonight they’ll be celebrating the release of their album at Milkboy Philly, and they’ll be joined by the Brothers Murphy of Penrose who just finished their first recording session with Bill Moriarty. The evening will also feature the pulse pounding rockabilly of Levee Drivers, and the psych rock swagger of Mountjoy. Milkboy Philly, 1100 Chestnut St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Bill McThrill

The 34th Annual Human BBQ at PiLam April 7

Posted on:

There really are so many options for things to do this weekend, and PiLam’s 34th Annual Human BBQ seems to be flying under the radar more than usual this year with the inaugural run of Liberty Fest. The badasssss Screaming Females will be headlining this wevening as they tour in support of their fifth album Ugly, and NY’s Young Magic will be impressing the hoards of drunken Penn kids with songs from their buzz worthy album Melt. But the mega fest features a lineup of 13 more bands playing for just $15, and if past Human Barbecues are any indication, then they might just have a few surprises planned (the secret Dead Milkmen set from a few years back most likely still fills all who were there with some good memories). While Sunny Ali & The Kid test music and racial barriers with their electrifying Pakistani cowboy rock, Norwegian Arms will impress with their lo-fi mandolin-driven ditties as they preview tracks from their upcoming LP. Dry Feet will rock you into a frenzy with their fast-paced surf punk, and Catnaps will sooth you with their melodic, heartwarmingly catchy tunes. The Tough Shits play their first home show since coming back from tour, and will have you sloshing around to their garage rock anthems in no time. Especially since The Shakes will be on hand to deliver an energetic set of under-two-minute assaults. This years barbecue will also feature the German hip hop of MC Digga (a.k.a. Ben Morgan), the three pronged bass assault of Acid Kicks, the alt rock anthems of Welter, and so much more. Check out the set times HERE. PiLam, 3914 Spruce Street, 12pm, $15, All Ages – Bill McThrill

Busses, Break It Up & Orbit to Leslie at JB’s March 6

Posted on:

If Busses new 2-track EP Metal/Shangri-La is an indicator of the trio’s desired sound, then they may be on to something. The first half “Metal” begins with a guitar that gradually increases in decibel as if first heard faintly approaching in the distance, creating the lure of anticipation. Moments later, it arrives with a bang as drums kick the track into gear. When the lead vocal finally enters the equation it seems to take control as a calming force. The opposing track works in reverse the vocal creating a peaceful comfortable setting that the other instruments play within rather than fitting through. In either case, the overall feel is well-produced by the band and Kyle “Slick” Johnson and refined with hints of being rough around the edges. They’ll be joined by Break It Up, whose sound combines the sweet vocals of modern pop with the grainy attitude of post punk, and Orbit to Leslie, whose interstellar journey finds them time-warping to the land of 50’s doo wop funneled through a hazy, psychedelic strainer. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Joe Kusy + Big Shirts 7” Record Release Party at The Station March 6

Posted on:

When Founding Fathers Records described the four tracks on Joe Kusy‘s debut EP, POPCORN SALAMANDER, as "revved-up, psyched-out, space-jammin’ ramblers from the mind of a mad man," it hit the nail on the head. On POPCORN, the guitarist/vocalist from Far-Out Fangtooth runs wildly through trippy kaleidoscope meadows, breaching levels of psychedelic acid trips, bone-deep garage phantasm, and spastic finger work that somehow seem reserved in the end. But it’s a journey that shouldn’t be all-powerful every minute – to truly understand the mad genius of Kusy is to lose the mystery of it all, and that’s not something you could afford. You can, though, get a glimpse of it tonight at The Station where he’s holding a record release party for the EP’s 7-inch pressing (dropped as a 45 first ifyadidn’tknow). And, as a bonus, you’ll get to witness the live rarity of Robo Trippers and the abstract beauty of Plural DovesThe Station, 1550 McKean St., 9pm, $5, 21+ – Annamarya Scaccia
