Hot Guts recently celebrated the release of their debut LP Edges (Blind Prophet Records) at Wierd Records in NYC. (You can stream its dark wave title track completely HERE as well as other sample clips from the record.) Founded in 2007 by frontman Wes Russell and drummer Greg Frantz, the duo is accompanied by Michael Reaser (FNU Ronnies) and Adam Cooper (Tickley Feather, Akasha Blade, the Chimeras) on the album, which also features contributions from Miss Shari Vari (a.k.a. Void Vision) and Philly-based experimental musician Charles Cohen (on the Buchla Music Box). Hopefully Hot Guts will be joined on stage by special guests tonight at Kung Fu Necktie when they open for Quintron (who ingeniously invented an analog “drone synth” called The Singing House that you can learn more about HERE) & Miss Pussycat and S.T.A.R.W.O.O.D. Work Drugs Help Break Down Barriers at KFN April 28

Posted on:

As you walk along the streets crowded with individuals headed to numerous unique destinations. Simultaneously, you are a small piece of a larger group and also an isolated entity populating an isle. The beat finds an easy course as the rhythm flows with the traffic, and absentmindedly yours steps feel lighter and less labored. The pace quickens while warm vocals take the chill out of the night air, and the exterior environment is no longer a hazard. Instead, it transforms into a haven. Work Drugs has a way of breaking down the barriers of isolation and bridging its gaps.

The constant beat may be the primary observation. However, the vocals are smooth and calming adding a layer that provides stability with the steady continuous movement.  Horns, when thrown into the mix, clear the dark skies providing a magnificent view of the stars that help you reach your destination, but don’t forget to take a look around. Work Drugs will be sharing the bill at Kung Fu Necktie tonight with the “beer-battered” garage pop/rock of Faux Slang and dreamy psych rockers Ports of Call. Kung Fu Necktie 1250 North Front Street, 9pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Climbing New Heights w/Oh! Pears at JB’s April 28

Posted on:

Accessibility and intensity often unite at the entrance of music. Orchestral string-based productions develop a natural sense of dramatic importance. However, the complexity characterized by this drama can be overwhelming – like an intricate labyrinth of sound where the listener is easily misled and frustrated. Fortunately, Oh! Pears avoid this frustration unlocking the gates to an expansive estate allowing the listener to wander freely and embrace the surroundings.

While Corey Duncan’s earnest voice may hold the reins of this vehicle, it’s the instrumentation that provides guidance along the path. At times, the layers of percussion, strings, and his vocals converge building a sonic mountain to climb, but the musical hike is certainly worth the view at the summit. Oh! Pears will be headlining Johnny Brenda’s tonight with support from Alex Winston and Octant. Johnny Brenda’s 1201 N. Frankford Ave, 8pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Fishtown Shadfest 2012 at Penn Treaty Park April 28

Posted on:

Penn Treaty Park will be abuzz for another spring-ish day as it hosts the annual Fishtown Shadfest. And while local arts and craft vendors sell their wares, Philadelphia Brewing Company will serve their brews and host the Kenzinger Challenge Run, and you have the chance to enjoy a shad sandwich from the chefs of Standard Tap. Philadelphia Rollergirls and WXPN have joined forces to showcase an afternoon of exciting music. First the bad news, Grandchildren had to cancel their anticipated appearance last minute. But Asteroid #4 and Mondo Topless alum Jamie Mahon and the rest of his psychedelic garage rock outfit St. James & The Apostles will be taking their place. And today will still be the last chance to catch Buried Beds before they tour alongside local natives and pals mewithoutYou. York Street Hustle will be headlining with their soulful jazz beats, while the Citywide Specials will be kicking it with some country bluegrass twang. And come out to support Girls Rock Philly and Rock to the Future as they give you a proper glimpse into the future of local music. Penn Treaty Park, 1199 N. The Spinning Leaves 7” Release Party at Underground Arts April 27

Posted on:

For their latest album Head Aglow, the Spinning Leaves recorded with Henry Hirsch (Lenny Kravitz, Madonna) from Waterfront Studios inside a 19th century church in Hudson NY. If you’ve tuned into the bands website over the past few days, then you’ve most likely already streamed the soulful acoustic melodies of their latest 7”, which is being released today on vinyl (digital May 1) by Drexel’s Mad Dragon Records. And when James Michael Baker and Barbara Gettes play at Underground Arts tonight they’ll be backed by the likes of Ross Bellenoit, Jonas Osterle, Phil D’Agostino and an array of special guests. Just 2 months ago Lightninging celebrated the release of their EP in the very same building, so they’ll be right at home when they open the evening. The album release celebration will also feature the latest project from The Weeds‘ Emily Ana Zeitlyn called Divers and the humorous storytelling of Juliet Hope Wayne. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 9pm, $10, All Ages – Bill McThrill

Montreal vs. Philly w/Streetwalkers and More at House Show April 27

Posted on:

Some bands attempt to play up their sound by adding pieces that just don’t fit, in a word overproducing. Philly’s Streetwalkers don’t over dress for the occasion. It’s simply jeans and t-shirt indie rock. The guitar riffs are simple and slightly raw, but that rawness is a technique meant to demonstrate the band’s style. Streetwalkers are comfortable in their own skin and the slightly worn appearance. The straightforward “we are what we are” approach gives an air of natural authenticity. The bass guitar thumps along in a slightly irritated manner that matches the six-string while the drums come along for the trip.  When the guitar decides to step to the front, the sound is heavy yet controlled pushing up to the edge, but not over it. They’re a band that can play the clean-cut rock ‘n’ roll. But they prefer to be themselves rather than dressing the part – frayed edges and worn boots take it or leave it. Tonight Streetwalkers will be performing in South Philly at a DIY house show as part of a Montreal vs. Philly showcase with Satellite Hearts, Alpha Wavez, Crabe and Leamers. House Show, (Please contact one of the acts for more details.), 7pm, $6, All Ages – Michael Colavita
