Heyward Howkins Official Post-release Show at PhilaMOCA June 27

Posted on:

Former lead guitarist of The Trouble with Sweeney and founding member of The Silver Ages, Heyward Howkins has really come into his own with the release of his solo debut LP The Hale & Hearty (which you can stream in its entirety via Spinner). From the fine production work of Chet Delcampo (an artist who has been linked to such greats as Smokey Robinson, Kid Congo Powers, and David Lovering), to the merged melodies of British twee and Americana roots, it’s an impressive album that will resonate for years to come. While the artist had an album release party at Fishtown’s Maas building earlier this month, Howkins will be now having his official post-release celebration at PhilaMOCA tonight which will also feature whimsical Swedish singer-songwriter Sofia Talvik and radiant folk beauty Emily Arin. And along with an impressive lineup of music, the venue will be providing complimentary home-made hard lemonade, Narragansett Lager, and gourmet sandwiches. Purling Hiss Get Awesomely Loud at JB’s June 26

Posted on:

Imagine the badassery of a blues guitar solo, the reckless, chaotic attitude of a punk show, and noise so all encompassing, Kevin Shields would ask to turn it down. Intense, right? Something like that’s happening tonight at Jonny Brenda’s where Deli favorites Purling Hiss are headlining. On record, these guys sound like a seriously vintage blues band on a vinyl not quite dusted properly after years spent oin the garage. Which is to say, awesome. And it only promises to be more awesome live; fresh off tours with The War on Drugs, Dr. Dog and Wilco, the grungy, unapologetic trio is known for its energetic live shows, matching the intensity of its sound in its performance. With creepy noisers Far-Out Fangtooth and the newly-signed-to-Matador The Young opening, JB’s is sure to be one of the loudest rooms in Philly this evening. Which, again, is to say, awesome. Tuesday Tune-Out w/Oh! Pears at PhilaMOCA June 26

Posted on:

Oh! Pears, the orchestral/chamber pop project of Corey Duncan, takes the stage tonight at PhilaMOCA. He will be doing a solo set followed by an improvisational vocal set which definitely will require some audience participation. His voice, which is a bit reminiscent of acts like Beirut and Grizzly Bear, is honest and versatile. His music is complex in instrumentation and lyrically thoughtful. What always seem to stand out are Duncan’s effortless guitar work and its nuances of hidden treasures. This evening’s show is part of PhilaMOCA’s Tuesday Tune-Outs, where a musician performs and then selects a movie to be screened (which is usually unannounced) for the crowd to enjoy after their set. It’s fun and intimate! Well, I happen to know that Duncan has chosen The Room, a cult film that was dubbed the “Citizen Kane of bad movies.” So warm up your vocal chords and prepare to view a movie that’s so good at being bad.
