Purling Hiss & Bandname Close Out the R5 Free Summer Concert Series at Morgan’s Pier Aug. 25

Posted on:

Purling Hiss are headlining the last showcase that is part of R5’s Free Summer Concert series at Morgan’s Pier, ushering out the summer with creaky, crackly fuzz-rock whose colors bleed together like tie-dye. Led by lo-fi acolyte Mike Polizze (also from Birds of Maya), their recent single for Weathervane Music’s Shaking Through, "Lolita," is a departure from the band’s amorphous sound. Purling Hiss are still reminiscent of the early 90s, but the track sounds like it came from another band entirely. With a clear-cut swagger, and a plaintive, aggressive rant that rises above the grit of some truly raunchy guitar work, it’s strange to hear Purling Hiss sans static, fuzz pedals and muffled vocals, but they’ve made this rock-and-roll gem pretty much irresistible. They’re preceded tonight by Bandname, who definitely belong on somebody’s last-beach-trip-of-the-summer playlist. Morgan’s Pier, 221 N. Weekend Warrior, August 24 – 26

Posted on:

I’m really excited to get a chance to chill out this Saturday, grab some brunch, visit the Gauguin, Cézanne, Matisse: Visions of Arcadia exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and swing by the 40th Street Summer Series with Adventuredrum, which seems quite appropriate since the first and last time the massive side project from Christopher Sean Powell (Need New Body/Man Man) performed was at PMA’s Art After 5. Pow Pow was surrounded by fellow Man Man bandmates Jamey Robinson and Matt Gibson, Chris Ward (Pattern Is Movement), Jason Kourkounis (Bardo Pond), Chris Wilson (Ted Leo & The Pharmacists), Ricardo Lagomasino (Many Arms), David Fishkin (Extreme Fishkin), Stephen Buono (Split Red), Koofreh Umoren (The Extraordinaires), Adam Hershberger (Bobby Zankel’s Warriors of the Wonderful Sound), Sam Belkowitz, Eugene Lew and Ellen Houle. I also saw that Arc in Round’s Matt Ricchini will be joining the group so it will be interesting to see who else Powell has recruited for this time around, but it’s guaranteed to be weird and funky and FREE so that’s all good in my book. Just hoping that the predicted isolated thunderstorms will hold off for their performance, but I’m guessing that they’ll be able to move it indoors at The Rotunda if things don’t go quite our way (though I’d obviously rather for it to be outside). Don’t miss out Adventuredrum tomorrow because who knows when you’ll get a chance to catch them again! 40th Street Summer Series, 40th & Walnut Sts., 6pm, Free All Ages (Photo by Joshua Camerote) – Q.D. The local branch is back after a summer hiatus, and will be holding another showcase this Saturday in South Philly. If you want to know where, then you’ll have to contact them at phillysofar@gmail.com. If you want to know who will be performing, we do know, but you’ll just have to show up and discover for yourself or view the livestream HERE (now, that just isn’t as fun, but to each his/her own). Light Heat Makes Its Live Performance Debut at Fleisher-Ollman Gallery Aug. 24

Posted on:

Quentin Stoltzfus makes a long-awaited return to the stage tonight at Fleisher-Ollman Gallery for the closing reception of "A Complete Die, etc." The former centerpiece of Mazarin, who released 3 LP’s over a seven-year run 1999-2006, dropped out of the public eye after the psych-rock outfit disbanded due to a naming conflict with a wedding band from upstate New York and other issues. His new venture called Light Heat finds Stoltzfus combining forces with members of local favorites The Walkmen, whose Walter Martin appeared on We’re Already There, and Alec Ounsworth of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

“And the Birds” the project’s lead single is a testament to Stoltzfus retro rock/pop sensibility. Uniting crafty organ and keys with percussion that provide a solid structure and direction while still allowing the vocals and lyrics to shine through. The harmonies develop a depth without attempting to overachieve. This early peek at Light Heat is an indication that Stoltzfus still has a lot to offer to our thriving local music scene. (BTW: He also tweeted that he’ll be pre-gaming at Oscar’s before the show if anyone would like to join him.) Fleisher-Ollman Gallery, 1616 Walnut St., 7pm, Free, All Ages, – Michael Colavita

Doylestown rockers Circa Survive have a two night residency at Union Transfer this weekend for the upcoming release of their new album, Violent Waves, which will be officially available on August 28. The album is an attempt to capture the group’s live energy, and was recorded in a week and mixed by the band. New Music Video: “Pink Ruff” – Bleeding Rainbow

Posted on:

Here’s a new music video for the lead single, “Pink Ruff,” off Bleeding Rainbow’s forthcoming album Yeah Right. It premiered earlier today via Stereogum. It was directed by Herbie Shellenberger and Michael Thomas Vassallo. Below is what they had to say about its production.

Bleeding Rainbow approached us about shooting a video for the firstsingle (“Pink Ruff”) from their new album. One of the references they mentioned was the “Stargate” sequence from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Thinking about this scene, we were reminded of similar abstract portraits (Warhol’s “Chelsea Girls” as well as films by Kenneth Anger and Shuji Terayama) and the colorfield films of Paul Sharits.

We shot on 16mm color reversal (Ektachrome 7285) in Rob and Sarah’s basement with each of the four band members sitting and posing in a bust shot. We had intense lights with color gels moving around the band members, video and overhead projectors, a fog machine and a sequence with plastic wrap in front of the lens.

When we got the film back from the lab, we discovered that much of it was misregistered in the camera and out of frame. The footage was even more abstract than was planned, but luckily it fit with the theme. Michael Tom edited the footage with lots of fast cuts, chopping it up to match the intensity of the song. We are very proud to work with Bleeding Rainbow and thank them for their support in helping us shoot on 16mm!

Last Sickoids Show in Philly for a While at Golden Tea House Aug. 23

Posted on:

Tonight at the Golden Tea House is the last show in Philly for punk outfit Sickoids in a while. The trio will be soon scattered throughout the U.S. According to a post on their blog from Rob Fitzpatrick, he’ll be leaving for the Bay Area to satisfy his “Babylonian tendencies.” Vince Klopfenstein is heading off to LA “where he will probably seek work in a Sunset Strip cock-rock band.” And Eric Montanez will be going down to Richmond, VA “where he will sit on his throne as the King of Punk.” However, it’s not exactly the end for Sickoids. The band just recorded six songs this past weekend for a 12” that will be released via Sorry State. They’ll also continue to perform and tour when it fits their schedules. Sickoids will be joined this evening by Nightbirds, No Stayer, Mutant Genes, and Attitude Era. Golden Tea House, (Please contact one of the acts or the venue for more details.), 7pm, $7, All Ages – Alexis V.
