Weekend Warrior, September 7 – 9

Posted on:

Last weekend marked the end of summer for many, though it doesn’t officially end until Autumn Equinox. Luckily, there are plenty of shows to hit this weekend to keep summer alive and well in Philly. We love the scuzzy, face-melting sounds of Purling Hiss, and it seems that the rest of the music world is starting to realize the badassery of Mike Polizze’s wailing guitar so catch the Hiss while you can before they are taken away from us on seemingly endless tours. They’ll be opening tonight for legendary post-punk outfit Mission of Burma at Union Transfer. (BTW: We also love WHYY so don’t miss out on their generous Connections Fest freebie this Saturday at The Great Plaza with Yo La Tengo, Maps & Atlases, Frank Turner and locals The Lawsuits and Fabian Akilles.) St. James & The Apostles Album Release Party at JB’s Sept. 7

Posted on:

St. James & The Apostles celebrate the release of their latest recording Baphomet tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. The group of cousins, fronted by former The Three 4 Tens/Marah/Asteroid #4/Mondo Topless member Jamie Mahon, approaches the concept of a power trio from a psychedelic garage rock perspective. Mike Kiker incorporates organ and key-bass creating a funky blues groove à la The Doors. The three-headed battering ram delivers an unadulterated heaviness developing a depth that isn’t determined by decibels but through the inner-core conviction in their performance. They’ll be joined by Shawn Kilroy’s Weird Hot and Joey Sweeney’s Artic Splash. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Blayer Pointdujour and the Rockers Galore Record Release Party at MilkBoy Philly Sept. 7

Posted on:

Blayer Pointdujour and the Rockers Galore will be holding their record release party tonight at MilkBoy Philly. Their new full-length album The Bull, the follow-up to 2011’s Port Au Prince EP, was recorded at MilkBoy Studios, and will be released via Philebrity Label. Blending a mixture of reggae, funk, hip hop, compas, and rock with some historical and personal knowledge and experiences, Pointdujour uses music to educate, uplift and shake the booty of its listeners. The band will be supported this evening by the psychedelic dub sounds of I Yahn I Arkestra, indie rockers The National Rifle, and hip hop collective Philadelphia Slick, which should make for an eclectic night of music. MilkBoy Philly, 1100 Chestnut St., 9pm, $10, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Instamatic & The Bad Doctors Opening for Gemini Club at North Star Bar Sept. 6

Posted on:

Tonight the North Star Bar will be hosting a dance partay. Synth army Instamatic, which is made up of “4 guys, 9 synths, 3 drum machines, 1 computer, 3 PAs, [and] speakers, speakers, speakers,” will be teleporting its audiences back to those days when bands like New Order and Depeche Mode were blaring through your cassette Walkman. The Bad Doctors will also be time warping with you – only to an earlier, more aggressive period. However, both acts are rising stars proudly keeping the New Wave genre alive and well in the local music scene. They’ll be supporting Chicago indie-electronic dance trio Gemini Club. Come out this evening and show how Philly gets down! North Star Bar, 2639 Poplar St., 9pm, $10, 21+ (Instamatic Photo by Shadowscene) – H.M. Kauffman

Purples Toe the Line at KFN Sept. 5

Posted on:

Former The Teeth members Peter MoDavis, Brian Ashby, and Jonas Oesterle take the stage tonight at Kung Fu Necktie as their latest incarnation Purples. The band’s sound is a combination of raw power with an eye focused on pop refinement. Ashby’s guitar licks are at times ragged and sinister at others refined and soaring. The vocals toe a similar line between gut-wrenching and harmonious providing the full range of possibilities while giving strength to either cause. Purples appear to hit that balance – the brute force and emotional energy of a garage band with a touch of control and precision. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

September’s Deli Philly-Curated Tuesday Tune-Out at PhilaMOCA Kicks Off Tonight w/The Homophones’ Jason Ferraro!

Posted on:

Hey Everyone,

Tonight is the kick-off to my curation residency this month at PhilaMOCA for their Tuesday Tune-Out, which will feature The Homophones’ Jason Ferraro. Hopefully you should all know and love his work as much as I do. He’s a class act and a true entertainer. It’s guaranteed to be a fun evening! We’ll also be screening Bill Murray’s only directorial effort. Jason will be providing the popcorn and hot dogs as well as the kick-ass tunes. Other upcoming Tuesday Tune-Outs will include Tadoma + Arc in Round’s Jeff Zeigler (9/11), Arrah and the Ferns + The Extraordinaires’ Jay Purdy (9/18), and Vintage Kicks + TBA (9/25). I’m completely confident that these shows are going to rule! Hope to see you sooner than later. (Photo by Shadowscene; Video by Out of Town Films)

BTW: Also check out a guest post that I did for WXPN’s The Key HERE about this month’s events.

Much love!
