Where Is My Mind?: TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb’s Dan Bruskewicz

Posted on:

I’ll always remember the first time that I learned about TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb. I was on a balcony in NYC at my friend’s housewarming party, and was talking to the guitarist (at the time) of the band Xylos. I had just started working with The Deli, and he was asking me about Philly acts that were good and were worth reaching out to for trading shows. Then he inquired if I had ever heard of a “great band” called TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb, which caught me by surprise because I hadn’t. I had also been doing some booking in Philly for the last few years and paying close attention to venue bills, but didn’t remember coming across that name. TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb was the first band that was suggested to me since beginning to write for The Deli. I came home after a fun, drunken night, and was surprised that I was able to remember their name. I checked out their MySpace, and he was right. They were great, and I eventually wrote my first of many pieces about TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb. Well, today is the release date for their long-awaited follow-up to Idiots entitled Manufacturing Joy. It’s another fantastic LP from Kong and his crew that you should definitely take a listen to and purchase. They’ll also be celebrating its release this Thursday at Johnny Brenda’s. First, check out our interview with TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb’s talented, hard-livin’ frontman Dan Bruskewicz HERE.

New Track: “A Little Death to Laugh” – Cold Cave

Posted on:
Cold Cave just shared a new track called “A Little Death to Laugh” today which is the A-side to a three-song 7” that will be released via Wes Eisold’s own label Heartworm during their fall tour. The single was inspired by the late poet Tristan Corbiere. Eisold plans to record a new album, which is due out next year, with his new band lineup that consists of David Scott Stone (LCD Soundsystem, Melvins), Hunter Burgan (AFI), Cody Votolato (Blood Brothers, Jaguar Love), and London May (Samhain). Cold Cave will be performing next in Philly on October 22 when they open for Divine Fits.

The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Johnny Showcase

Posted on:

We love alter-egos and artists who stay in character, especially when they are as downright sexy as Johnny Showcase (a.k.a. David Sweeny), which is most likely why he came out on top in our recent Featured Artist(s) Poll. (Or maybe it’s because he just simply likes to be on top, ladies – oh yeah.) Well, check out our interview HERE with the cougar magnet Johnny Showcase, and learn more about his semi-mythical past.

Pissed Jeans Opening for Hot Snakes at Underground Arts Sept. 24

Posted on:
Pissed Jeans are bringing their brand of heavy/hardcore punk in the vein of SST record’s 80’s roster to Underground Arts tonight when they open for San Diego post-hardcore outfit Hot Snakes. The Philly by way of Allentown noise assassins capture the pent up aggravations and frustrations of mundane living releasing it all on stage through the volatile wails of vocalist Matt Korvette and head-banging Black Sabbath-inspired riffs. It’s been a treat to see the Sub Pop four-piece performing out at more local shows lately, and I hope that this trend continues. But you never know if it will or not so come out this evening and prepare for some brotherly shoves. Choice/Cuts: Norwegian Arms – “Easy a Lover Goes West”

Posted on:

We’re back with the second installment of our Choice/Cut session with Norwegian Arms. In this footage, you get an exclusive listen of their yet-to-be-released song “Easy a Lover Goes West” (which will appear on their upcoming album Wolf Like A Stray Dog). We don’t think that you’ll be able find it anywhere on the interweb. Well, in the age of iPhones and smartphones, there might be a poorly recorded version out there somewhere. But why would you want to suffer through that? And we surely don’t want you to either. Get down to some island vibes, and check out our interview with “Keith Birthday” and “Dr. Awkward” where they get a chance to discuss their love for “vintage” gear. Special thanks to the HotBox crew. Enjoy!

Mikele Edwards Opening for Laetita Sadier at JB’s Sept. 23

Posted on:

Mikele Edwards (of Arc in Round) takes the stage on her own tonight at Johnny Brenda’s when she opens for Laetita Sadier (formerly of Stereolab). Edwards’ music is a hybrid of astral synths with ritualistic crystallized vocals that hone in on the listener in an almost chant-like fashion. It’s as if a new age space ceremony is taking place, but Edwards isn’t preaching, merely embracing the trip to the stars and describing the view. And things sound quite fine from out there. Daniel Ryan Belski Opening for Little Big League at KFN Sept. 22

The dimensions of Daniel Ryan Belski, known for his contributions to Arrah and the Ferns and the work under his former moniker The Divine Lorraine, just keep expanding. Showcasing his solo side project tonight at KFN, Belski’s folk-tinged music is far from bare bones. Building an energetic yet controlled atmosphere, Belski dishes out interesting adventurous narratives with refined guitar work that serves as a guide. However, there’s no doubt that he knows where he’s going. Speaking of multiple dimensions, Little Big League possess an equilibrium between finesse and power. Michelle Zauner’s naturally heartwarming vocals and the triad of bass, guitar, and drums peak on a united front, yet still take advantage of the opportune moment to flex some muscle. Weekend Warrior, September 21 – 23

Posted on:
"Blow Up New Jersey and Get Philly a Beach" has been a meme in our otherwise perfectly civil and sophisticated city for some time now. If this act of aggression against our non-gas-pumping neighbors ever comes to pass and the gleeful hordes rush to bask on the charred shore, Dry Feet will be savagely soundtracking the whole thing. This is a given, not just conjecture: After all, they do have an album entitled Philadelphia Beach. The trio plays classic garage-surf-punk propelled by a liberal helping of attitude and some of the cleanest lyrics ever found in the genre. Their brash, sneering jams roar by in under two minutes, packing a dense, huge-sounding arrangement of texture into every second. "So Freakin’ What?" the first song off their April release Highway to Heck, features an fifties-style harmonizing intro, wailing guitars, and sentiments such as "You think I need a job? You think I give a DAMN?" They’re playing Kung Fu Necktie this Sunday night, opening for the notoriously theatrical NOBUNNY and his much sleazier brand of pop-punk weirdness. Prepare to feel slightly violated. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Alyssa Greenberg

Fledgling side project of Creepoid’s Pat Troxell and Moon Women’s Justin Pittney, The Residuels, has another performance tonight at Kung Fu Necktie (Upstairs). They’ll be opening for Troxell’s former band The Golden Boys (who they will be hitting the road with after for a run of shows), The Spider Bags and The Limes.
