Weekend Warrior, September 28 – 30

Posted on:
The Norwegian Arms/Laser Background Philly house venue residency tour continues this evening at University City DIY staple Pilam. The guys are reliving their college days camped out in a couch fort, and they may or may not still be trippin’, but they’re ready to entertain some rowdy college kids. They’ve also brought along DRGN King, who was recently signed to Bar None Records, and Ladies Auxiliary to keep the party vibes going. It’s back to school time, y’all! Just don’t try a “Triple Lindy” off the stage tonight. Pilam, 3914 Spruce St., 8pm, $1 – $5 donation, All Ages – Alexis V.

Vacationer Making You Miss Summer Already at Underground Arts Sept. 28

Posted on:
With reverb-soaked keys and lyrics delivered almost exclusively in wistful sighs, Vacationer is a band that literally wants nothing more than to help you chill out, which should be good for those who still have summer in their minds even though it officially ended last week. The project fronted by Kenny Vasoli travels far from the roots of his previous pop-punk and prog-rock bands The Starting Line and Person L, but he seems to be finding solace on his latest journey. However, it doesn’t mean that he’s completely turned his back on his past. Vasoli will be hitting the road soon with his compadres from The Starting Line for their Say It Like You Mean It 10th anniversary tour. But tonight Vacationer are coming to the Eraserhood, and headlining at Underground Arts with support from up-and-coming pop-rock outfit Cold Fronts, electro-dance duo City Rain, and DJ Les Professionnels. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 9pm, $14, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

Gypsy Death and You EP Release Show at Cha-Cha’Razzi Sept. 28

Posted on:
If you ever wondered what local dreamy-shoegaze two-piece Gypsy Death and You would sound like with a full band backing them, then tonight at Cha-Cha’Razzi is your chance to find out. The duo of Emily Cahill and Alex Wilson will be joined by some of their friends to fill out their sound for the celebration of their new release EP no. 2. You can preview a bit of the album by listening to the track “Ghosts” HERE, a catchy track made up of fuzzy guitars and soft dreamy vocals. So head down to South Philly for some “new songs and new merch” courtesy of Gypsy Death and You. They’ll also be supported this evening by locals True Gold, Great Red Spot and New Jersey’s Green Paper. Cha-Cha’Razzi, (Please contact one of the acts or the venue for more deets.), 8pm, $5 – $10 donation, All Ages – Dan Brightcliffe

Chill Moody Performing Who Do You Love? in Its Entirety at Love Park Sept. 28

Posted on:
Well, hopefully the weather gods will be kind to Chill Moody today. The West Philly hip hop artist will be putting on a free show at Love Park at noon. He’ll be joined by co-conspirators Beano and Hank McCoy as well as Band for Higher to perform Who Do You Love? in its entirety. The prediction is coin flip on whether it will rain or not. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for the latter. Love Park, 15th & Filbert Sts., 12pm, Free, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

Check out a rad new track from fledgling noisy rockers Cool Points called “Dangerous, But Kinda Flirty”! It’s the B-side to their self-titled debut release that dropped earlier this week. You can download the song for free as well as the album’s A-side “Crucial Turds” HERE – obviously, “cool points” for those who are already hip to it. ;o) Look out for more new material coming from the local four-piece soon. TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb Album Release Party at JB’s Sept. 27

Posted on:
The mighty TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb are taking over Johnny Brenda’s tonight to celebrate the release of their long-awaited and most enjoyable sophomore full-length album Manufacturing Joy. The second floor of the much-beloved Fishtown music venue will be filled with the stench of alcohol and sweat seeping from the pores of the crowd there to get down to new and old favorite from the band’s catalogue. (Check out our recent interview with TJ Kong, a.k.a. Dan Bruskewicz, where he talks about the new LP, why you should say “no” to drugs, and much more HERE.) They’ll also have the support of pals Toy Soldiers, Double King, and The Looks Of It this evening to warm things up while the beers and whiskey go down. Cheers fellas! Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

In their latest session, you’ll find an informative interview with Reef as well as footage of him performing for the first time with live musicians – the PMM-curated house band, which consists of  Elliot “El Smooth” Garland on keys, Charlie “Chaz Patz” Patierno on drums and Rhodney “Rah M. Sungee” Miller on bass. You can also download three songs from the session HERE. The inaugural episode of this collaboration featured Ethel Cee, and the next one will spotlight Peedi Crakk.

The Interest Group Opening for R. Stevie Moore at JB’s Sept. 26

Posted on:
Casting a 1960’s psychedelic haze, The Interest Group catches your ear with skintight instrumentation, the guitar wrapping itself ever so closely to the rhythm section that the sonic fabric becomes truly interwoven. Marissa Lesnick’s siren-like vocals lure you into a mystical musical garden, while the music systemically entraps you in a whimsical daydream. They’ll be strangely matched tonight at Johnny Brenda’s with legendary lo-fi weirdo R. Stevie Moore and local oddballs Ecce Shnak. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ – Michael Colavita

The Deli Philly’s Final Tuesday Tune-Out w/Vintage Kicks, Cousin Brian & More at PhilaMOCA Sept. 25!

Posted on:

It’s my final Tuesday Tune-Out at PhilaMOCA, and I’m not lying when I say that I’m surely going to get banged up tonight so come join me! We have great rockin’ lineup with up-and-coming local acts Vintage Kicks and Cousin Brian (and I’m hoping that they’re ready to party down with me). I also chose to screen one of my favorite documentaries, Don Letts’ Punk: Attitude. The film along with getting a chance to share local acts that I dig are the main reasons why I wanted to do a music and movie-themed event like Tuesday Tune-Out. I’ve had a great time getting to know the artists, attendees, and nice, dedicated folks at PhilaMOCA. I hope that they’ve had a good time too. Just a heads up to our readers that we’ll be back at the multipurpose space on Friday, October 26 for The Deli Philly’s Halloweeniversary Partay! Yes, we had such a great time last year at PhilaMOCA throwing our Halloween Partay, and since our anniversary falls in the same month, we decided to combine them and throw a serious rager. We’ll have more deets for you soon, but we already have some great acts confirmed that we are really looking forward to sharing with you. Until then, we hope that you can join us for our last hurrah this month, and make sure to bring some cab money because we don’t want anyone to be able to walk or drive home this evening. Cheers! PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $5, All Ages – Q.D. Tran
