New Music Video: “Tigerbeats” – Work Drugs

Posted on:
Below is a new music video that brings a smile to our faces from Work Drugs for their latest single “Tigerbeats.” The song was written after they performed at The Barbary this summer at the weekly indie dance party, which goes by the same name. Apparently, there was a couple that night making sweet, sweet love (not really – sounds more like bangin’) in the middle of the venue while people photographed it – way to keep it classy Philly! “With our fuzzy memory intact, and plenty of photographic evidence to fill in the gaps, we pieced together the night and all of its debauchery into what has become, ‘Tigerbeats.’ So here it is, a tribute to that night, as well as the timeless teen idols that epitomize that party; shall they all remain forever young.” You can also download the track for free HERE.

Data Garden’s The Switched-On Garden 002 at Bartram’s Garden Oct. 14

Posted on:
Experimental electronic music label Data Garden will be celebrating its one-year anniversary by closing out this year’s DesignPhiladelphia Festival and returning to West Philly’s Bartram’s Garden today for its The Switched-On Garden 002. The event will bring together nature, electronic music and technology in the beautiful setting of North America’s oldest surviving botanic garden with live music, performances and sculptures. You’ll be treated to sets by King Britt and Spaceship Aloha, a.k.a. Christopher Sean Powell (Man Man, Adventuredrum, Need New Body), who both have new albums, The Bee and The Stamen & Universe Mahalo: Volume #1, being released via Data Garden. Dino Lionetti (Cheap Dinosaurs), Gretchen Lohse, Laura Baird and Allen Crawford will be collaborating to provide the backdrop for an essay inspired by Bartram’s Garden. As you might have experienced at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, musical compositions will be generated by the electronic impulses produced by tropical plants in regards to human interaction with the Data Garden: Duet. Klip Collective will be sharing a soundtrack and images projected “onto an “undulating mist of smoke.” Basically, there will be plenty of more artists and installations throughout the garden blurring the lines between the biological and digital worlds. It’s going to be beautiful outside so grab a blanket and go out to The Switched-On Garden 002 for one unique experience. Bartram’s Garden, 54th St. & Lindbergh Blvd., 2pm – 8:30pm, Free, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

Prowler EP Release Show w/Sunny Ali & the Kid and Busses at JB’s Oct. 13

Posted on:
Local noisy dance rockers Prowler will be celebrating the release of their new EP, Y’all Don’t Know, tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. Led by Tyler Griswald, the group will be bringing their unique brand of “swamp rock” and “colossal, spaced-out basement boogie” to get asses movin’. To help the guys and gal celebrate properly, they’ve recruited sardonic pals Sunny Ali & the Kid, whose sneering-grin, countrified garage rock is always an enjoyable listen, and the tension-filled, retro rock sounds of Busses. It’s going to be a solid locals only hang at JB’s this evening. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., $10, 9pm, 21+ – Dan Brightcliffe

Weekend Warrior, October 12 – 14

Posted on:
Tonight’s show at Johnny Brenda’s is a triptych of scuzzy psych-punk, presented by three local luminaries in the field. Heavy Medical‘s high-strung, buzzing guitar attacks come at you through a wall of agitated, hammering drums, corralling their aggression into short, brutal songs. Bleeding Rainbow are easier on the sensibilities with their luscious harmonies, yet they bring the noise with their biting guitars. Far-Out Fangtooth round out the night, blending dour vocals with tribal drum crashes for an almost monastic sound, if only monks had access to effects pedals. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Cheap Dinosaurs Take on Goblin at PhilaMOCA Oct. 12

With Halloween around the corner, it’s not surprising that artists are already getting into the spirit of things. Well, tonight for one night only at PhilaMOCA, Cheap Dinosaurs, led by Dino Lionetti with his all-star cast of local chiptune enthusiasts, will be taking on the songs of Goblin. No, not the album by Odd Future’s Tyler, The Creator – I’m talking about Italian prog-rockers Goblin. Get ready for expansive jams of their songs in ways that you may have never thought about before. They’ll also be joined on the bill by the intergalactic ambient sounds of Tom Guycot and experimental rockers The Joint Chiefs of Math. Escape From the Chill w/The Bailey Hounds at KFN Oct. 12

Posted on:
Now that fall appears to have taken the reins, and an ever-present chill fills the air. The Bailey Hounds, playing Kung Fu Necktie tonight, fit naturally with the bonfire and bourbon scheme. Employing a casually haunting Americana sound that dabbles in rustic blues and folk accented by warming harmonica and guitar that’s rings in a penetrating echo rustling the spirits inviting them to join in, the group leads you deep into the thick of it. The music is the fire that we’ll all gather around. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 Front St., 8pm, $8, 21+ (Photo by Jim Vasquez) – Michael Colavita
