R5 Productions Brings Local Artist Community Together for New Concert Poster Series

New Music, Emerging from your Local Scene

Albums be droppin’ errwhere Saturday night, as local guitar virtuoso Nick Millevoi and improvisational duo Superlith release the former’s latest, In White Sky, and the latter’s debut, Plasma Clusters at First Unitarian. The show promises to be a fun night for people who enjoy seeing instruments played well; Millevoi is renowned for his technique, his pieces admired for the way they bring out the dynamic and expressive range of the guitar. Superlith are no slouches themselves; trombonist Dan Blacksberg and drummer-turned-keyboardist Julius Masri have formed a deeply intuitive bond through years of playing together that translates into "beautifully unsettling" pieces of noise, rhythm, and melody. Held in the side chapel of First Unitarian, the event is sure to be an intimate and profound celebration, not to be missed. Oct. 20th: Album Releases: Nick Millevoi’s “In White Sky” and Superlith’s “Plasma Clusters” Chapel at the First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 8pm, $10 – Adam Downer
Oldermost, performing tonight at Johnny Brenda’s, have that classic Americana sound. Built on earnest vocals and melodies that exude warmth, overlaid with a scarred, melancholy exterior, this band calls to mind a horse that trots at a steady comfortable pace, the finger-picked guitar gradually gathering speed circling about, the bass gaining ground and the percussion holding steady. When its soul-warming momentum finally reaches a tipping point, that horse, seeing its opportunity, makes a mad dash toward the finish line. They’re joined by Fenster, the Great American Canyon Band and Mock Suns, a bill that will run the gamut from pastoral to bizarrely adventurous. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Makeshift shows pop up all the time in Philly so it shouldn’t be a surprise that festivals do as well. This Sunday Sweet Jane Vintage and Lucky 13 are teaming up to bring us the South Philly Fall Festival, and it’ll be a beautiful fall day to do so. There will be merchandise and food vendors along with local garage/psych bands like Spacin’, Residuels, Joe Kusy & The Rot Through Boys, Arctic Splash and more to keep things scuzzy and dirty in the South Philly streets. Take advantage of the good times outdoors before winter hibernation sets in! South Philly Fall Festival, Outside – Lucky 13 (1820 S. 13th St.), 12pm – 7pm, Free, All Ages – Alexis V.
Other fall entertainment this weekend…
Playing heart-warming indie pop with a folksy twist, local music darlings Buried Beds have a show tonight at Ortlieb’s. They’re workhorses in the Philly indie scene, having played in or contributed to a diverse array of area bands such as The War on Drugs, Man Man, mewithoutYou, and Dr. Dog, all while steadily crafting a trademark sound of luscious, wistfully-arranged rock perfect for the onset of autumn. Eliza Hardy and Brandon Beaver have helmed this project through years of musical evolution and life’s changes. They’re joined this evening by Savoir Adore, a similarly baroque indie-pop outfit, and Santah, power-pop devotees who are not to be missed. Ortlieb’s Lounge, 847 N 3rd St., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Alyssa Greenberg
Check out the most recent episode of Weathervane Music’s Shaking Through featuring Auctioneer, the project from multi-instrumentalist Craig Hendrix (Birdie Busch, Mammal of Paradise, Aderbat, etc.). The band also features Todd Erk (Hoots & Hellmouth, Birdie Busch) on bass and Todd Schied (Mammal of Paradise, Aderbat) on drums, and for the recording session, they collaborated with Eric Slick (Dr. Dog, Norwegian Arms, etc.) on percussion, Brian Rogers (Shot x Shot) on tenor sax, David Fishkin (Extreme Fishkin) on alto sax, Adam Hirschberger on trumpet, Jaron Olevsky (Amos Lee) on piano. You can download the fruits of their labor called "Our Future Faces" for free HERE. Auctioneer will be headlining tonight at Kung Fu Necktie. (Photo by Peter English)
Tonight at The Fire we’ve got a show presented by recently coagulated booking collective The Guild. It is the record release show for Luther, a pretty new melodic-punk band from Philly by way of Jersey. They got some nice praise and well-deserved hype for their debut EP Siblings and Sevens, and between touring, touring and more touring, they found time to record their debut LP Let’s Get You Somewhere Else (Chunksaah Records), which they’ll be celebrating its release this evening. The music is excitable and pretty damn catchy, but still punk, so don’t worry. The lineup is deep with local buddies Idiot Kid and Scarier Area, but also has NJ pop-punkers Static Radio and UK band The Arteries. The band has been touring with punk stalwarts The Bouncing Souls and Fishtown homies The Menzingers all over the place, so this will be a raucous homecoming sure to go deep into the night. You can booze your heart out at The Fire, so come out and have a good time. The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave., 8pm, $8, 21+ (Photo by Connor Byrne) – Adam G.

In order to properly describe what the Philly-Brooklyn hybrid Cuddle Magic does, it may be best to provide a roll-call of the elements at their disposal and the manner or technique in which each of these elements is emphasized in creating a complex system of sound. The reality is that the band, who is performing at the Tine Angel tonight, produces music, which makes use of a plethora of instruments like woodwinds, horns, strings etc. They use female and male vocals that bounce off each other and interlock in rich natural harmony marrying in a way that makes one wonder how they were ever apart; all the while spinning Byzantine literature lyrics. Cuddle Magic is part theatrical, part dramatic, part playful, but in the end, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts – an assembly line of musicality. Tin Angel, 20 S. 2nd St., 10:30pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Here’s a dub remix that you can download for free by Lushlife of local homies Les Professionnel‘s "Move!", which was originally a fist-pumper that found its way on this season’s premiere of MTV’s Jersey Shore. The remix is part of Potholes in My Lawn‘s Robot Soup, the fourth compilation in their producer showcase series. Lush is performing live tonight for free at The Delancey (Upstairs) for The Deli CMJ Electronic showcase.
The next time you want to take a road trip without evoking shitty memories of college, bring some Restorations with you. They’ve managed to craft powerful, uplifting post punk with a peripatetic feeling, as if all the members are restlessly, constantly thinking about how to push their influences farther. They’re as grand as a punk band can be, more akin to The War on Drugs than Hot Water Music at times, and never once veering into hokey faux-Americana territory. They’ve also gained a rep for their blisteringly loud shows – for as great as they sound on record, their shows are forceful in a very different way. They’re joined tonight at the First Unitarian Church by some other fantastic locals Into it. Over It., and out-of-towners Make Do and Mend and Hostage Calm, all stalwarts of soaring punk anthems. First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 7:30 pm, $12, All Ages – Alyssa Greenberg
The cold wave adrenaline rush of the aptly-named Void Vision, Shari Vari’s minimal solo synth/electronic project, will be on display tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. Void Vision finds Shari melding dark, ominous synth tones with semi-muted female vocals, effectively conveying the cinematic thrill of moving through a dimly lit back alley, bass pushing the tempo on a chase through the streets. This cold wave endeavor, far from being meditative, is one to dance to. The bill also includes the infectious ambient-r&b/techno stylings of the British band Holy Other and the intense drum-bass heavy escapades of Pressure Points. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ – Michael Colavita
