Residuels, the Moon Women–Creepoid side project that first brought its ragged garage jams to Philly over the summer, is performing tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. After a mini-tour across the Northeast and a promising couple of tracks, their new EP fully delivers on the rollicking power of their first forays, draped in fuzz and reverb imported from 60s psych. Opening for stoner rock giants …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead who are accompanied by The Coathangers, JB’s will be alive and well tonight. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 Frankford Ave., 9pm, $14 – $15, 21+ – Alyssa Greenberg

Rush to the Dance Floor w/W.C. Lindsay at North Star Bar Nov. 18
When suburban pop-punk unites with electronic dance-beats, the marriage that results is W. C. Lindsay. Tonight at North Star Bar, this unique pairing takes the rough-edged irate grit, the aggression, and frustration that fuels punk music while also making it relatable to an audience, and smoothes it out with dance grooves. Let your emotions run rampant, and then use that rush of adrenaline to dance the night away. W.C. Lindsay will be opening for a pair of Ohio outfits, rock-oriented Come Wind and the energetic pop duo Twenty One Pilots. North Star Bar, 2639 Poplar St., $12 – $14, 7pm, All Ages – Michael Colavita

HogMaw Bringing the Thunder at North Star Bar Nov. 17
A mess of strings is set to fill the stage at North Star Bar tonight. Progressive bluegrass group HogMaw’s music is an up-tempo combination of nearly all things string. With the ability/potential to jam out their tunes with a sonic explosion that’s been described as “thundergrass,” HogMaw takes bluegrass and ups the traditional ante, carving a multitude of rootsy hills and valleys that engulf the listener in some rural bliss. The band is opening for local headliner +Church+, who will be preaching their grunge-infused folk sounds. North Star Bar, 2639 Poplar St., $8 – $10, 9pm, 21+ – Michael Colavita

The Head & The Hand Press Launch Party at JB’s Nov. 16

Tonight at Johnny Brenda’s The Head & The Hand Press, a newly-formed publishing collective, will be celebrating its recently established writer’s workshop in the Fishtown community, which will serve as a collaborative and creative space for local writers as well as an operating home base to support their upcoming novel and almanac series. This was all made possible thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign. Helping to welcome them to the neighborhood will be the comforting, rural sounds of The Great Unknown and the sensually-charged grooves of Johnny Showcase with tunes provided throughout the evening by DJ Slowpoke (a.k.a. Birdie Busch). Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 Frankford Ave., 8pm, $8, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Point Breeze Flexing Some Muscle at The Bikery Nov. 16
South Philly’s The Bikery plays host to four adept noise rockers tonight, leading off with Point Breeze. These newly-minted, South Philly-based gents build traditional-sounding punk songs on a jangly, taut foundation, laden with circular riffs. Last month saw the release of their first cassette tape, bringing three solid jams into the world: "Bed Bug," "Saul" and "Armchair Activist." The muscular sound of this sampling is an encouraging first outing for this young band. The rest of the evening contains the storming anthems of Sore Saints, thoroughly gritty hardcore punks Braille and the always impressive Ladder Devils. The Bikery, 508 S. 5th St., 7pm, $5, All Ages – Alyssa Greenberg

Purling Hiss Corrupting Minds at JB’s Nov. 15
It should be no surprise that I’m looking forward to Purling Hiss headlining Johnny Brenda’s tonight. The ear-bleeding, carefree trash rock of the power trio is certainly something that you want to experience live. And while catching them on bills supporting notable acts like Wilco, Dinosaur Jr. and Mission of Burma might be a tasty appetizer, it’s still no replacement for a full meal of gut-busting, sleazy rock ‘n’ roll that would scare the shit out of those red-state, flag-waving wannabe successors. Yeah, it’s music that will corrupt young minds with combustible guitar solos that will light their joints, and that’s just the way I like it! Look out for a new Hiss album scheduled for release this spring via Drag City. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Alexis V.

New Music Video: “Young Lungs” – Brandon Setta

There’s no denying that the latest single, “Young Lungs,” from Brandon Setta (guitarist for the band Nothing), and new music video (below) are a bit of a downer. However, the lo-fi, acoustic guitar-driven track is also quite lovely with its pretty melodies and thoughtful, emotive lyrics that help create a certain mood. And though the song’s words really don’t match what you are seeing in the footage, the video’s imagery and storyline, while rather dark, really draws you in captivating your attention. We likey.
