Family Vacation Debut Live Performance at The Fire Dec. 1

Posted on:

Just when the cold weight of winter appears ready to hold you down, a band emerges to lighten the load. Family Vacation will celebrate the release of their self-titled debut EP tonight at The Fire. Comprised of four Temple students, Family Vacation appears to be headed in a promising direction; one that combines peaceful airy melodies with the thunderclap of percussion and guitar work that stretches out as the songs progress. This energetic yet introspective prog-pop combination is already a tight package. Silky smooth psychedelic rockers The Keepers will headline the show, which also features the pop-rock of newcomers The Reflexes. The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave., 6pm, $8, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, November 30 – December 2

Posted on:

PhilaMOCA is hosting a rad eclectic lineup this Sunday that you don’t want to miss. Deli NYC fave Delicate Steve (a.k.a. Steve Marion) will be headlining the evening so come out and watch him tear up the pop music rulebook. He’ll be supported by three local acts that will be a good representation of the talent and diversity you’ll find in Philly’s music community. Arc in Round are back from their most recent Left Coast tour with Frightened Rabbit to fill the room with their rhythmic blasts and swirling synths and guitar, while Banned Books assault you with their barrage of avant-pop tunes. And opening the festivities will be the mesmerizingly beautiful folk of Megan Biscieglia’s Bad Braids (whom I’ve been absolutely smittened with as of late). PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 7pm, $10, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Toy Cannons

Posted on:
Like many artists, what began as a side project for The Gerunds’ Ben Goldberg has evolved into its own being in the form of Toy Cannons. The local area five-piece dives into crates to bring back beloved oldies melodies with 80’s synths and pop-punk sensibilities to mix up concoctions that beg for crowd sing-alongs. You can check out our interview with our Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner’s leader of the pack HERE.

Enjoy the Ride w/Kohoutek at KFN Nov. 28

Posted on:

Mad scientists Kohoutek will be bringing their epic jams to Kung Fu Necktie tonight. Made up of Scott Allison on homemade electronics, Scott Verrastro on drums, Chris Grier on electric guitar, Craig Garrett on bass, and John Stanton on electric guitar, the improv collective aims to push the already expansive boundaries of psych rock by blending atmospheric noise with patient guitars that morph into thunderous riffs to form crushing multi-layered, instrumental waves to drown their audiences in. With influences that guide their sonic exploration to “Claude Debussy composing on too much of Woodstock’s fabled brown acid, or Bitches Brew on some serious downers,” the local five-piece brings you on a journey where being and nothingness might occupy the same space. Don’t be afraid to freak out, man! It’s all part of the ride. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $8, 21+ – Q.D. Tran
