Joey Sweeney Your Life Is Calling at JB’s Dec. 8

Posted on:

Whether you consider it to be an insightful and entertaining perspective on all things Philly or a hipster douche blog that has a little too much of a snarky side, one does have to give Philebrity credit for providing plenty of amusing reads and flame wars throughout the years. But long before Joey Sweeney helmed the infamous blog, he was a highly acclaimed musician who has played with such acts like The Barnabys, The Trouble with Sweeney (which also featured his longtime friend Heyward Howkins and Miner Street Recording mastermind Brian McTear), and most recently Arctic Splash. In honor of Sweeney’s 40th birthday, Johnny Brenda’s will be hosting a retrospective on Sweeney’s life tonight, and a lot of special guests from his past will be on hand to give him a proper roast of sorts, including McTear who will also be performing as Bitter Bitter Weeks. While you probably don’t want to miss Sweeney reuniting The Barnabys and The Trouble with Sweeney for the first time in several years, it will also be a good chance to catch Arctic Splash before they drop their debut album. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford St, 9pm, $10, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Weekend Warrior, December 7 – 9

Posted on:

Creepoid austere soundscapes are so pleasing that it’s hard to focus on anything else while taking in their songs. The band is currently working on the follow-up to their impressive first LP Horse Heaven, which gave birth to beauties like opener “Wishing Well,” a slow-building Americana ballad in the vein of Low whose woozy lyrics take on an incantatory quality by the song’s midpoint. They’ll be supporting at Union Transfer tonight Pittsburghers Black Moth Super Rainbow, whose bizarrely entrancing “Windshield Smasher” incorporates a stadium-sized effects palette and breathes new life into what sounds a whole lot like Gary Glitter, and Casket Girls, a similar project from BMSR members. Union Transfer, 1024 Spring Garden St., 8pm, $14 – $15, All Ages – Alyssa Greenberg.

Free Work Drugs In-store Performance at AKA Music Dec. 7

Posted on:

Work Drugs are holding a free in-store performance at AKA Music this evening to celebrate their first “official” release Delta. The album features remastered/remixed singles from previous self-released CD-Rs as well as a few new singles. The group connects a combination of wispy male/female vocals, with a percussive backbone that provides a framework for a continuously on the move synth pop-rock combination meant for one-on-one action in the dark (or with multiple partners and the lights on if that’s what you are into). It’s quite easy to get sucked in by this street-lit seductively smooth operation. You can also get a second dose of the addictive outfit tomorrow at Ortlieb’s with Shark Tape and Ellis Islands, a project from Work Drugs bassist Nero Catalano. AKA Music, 27 N. 2nd St., 7pm, Free, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Lushlife Opening for The Coup at Underground Arts Dec. 7

Posted on:

Underground Arts presents a dope but somewhat oddly-matched showcase tonight with local emcee/producer Lushlife opening up the festivities. With an appreciation and ear whose net captures a wide range of musicology, Lushlife creates intricate, multi-faceted beats from his compact, road-ready stage setup. Smoothly incorporating a free-and-easy rhyming style over an ever-evolving, textured musical canvas, Lush has an old-school classic emcee delivery with a new-age, all-hands-on-deck sonic sensibility that easily demonstrates why he has received so much press this past year. He will be supporting Brooklyn art-punk duo Japanther, while west coast hip-hop veterans The Coup headline this evening’s bill. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 9pm, $13, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Recap and Photos: Nightlands (Feat. Jeff Zeigler) & Mikele Edwards at PhilaMOCA

Posted on:

I just have to gush about what a wonderful experience it was to see/hear Nightlands (a.k.a. Dave Hartley) and Arc in Round’s Jeff Zeigler performing a live original score to 2001: A Space Oddyssey at PhilaMOCA, which was curated by BITBY. I hadn’t viewed the film since I was a little child so I really didn’t remember much about it, and it felt like I was seeing the epic masterpiece for the first time. The cinematography was breath-taking, and the fact that the movie came out over a year before we landed on the moon is absolutely mind-blowing and a magnificent example of the true genius of Stanley Kubrick. Hartely and Zeigler also did a beautifully seamlessly job at composing their material with the film. And since I sat on a couch and really didn’t have a view of them playing their instruments, it was often difficult for me to tell when the music was coming from the duo or the movie, which is also a credit to their masterful hard work. After the performance, I chatted with Dave for a moment. I learned that he only had five full days to orchestrate everything with Jeff since he was on tour with The War on Drugs so the two locked themselves away repeatedly watching 2001. However, Hartley is so familiar with the movie that he did piece together ideas while he was on tour. The final result was one trippy-ass, Pink Floyd-esque evening where I really wished that I had dropped some acid, but there are plans to do the performance again in NYC so I might still have my chance. (Anyone out there have a connect? :o) There was also a fine opening performance by Jeff’s Arc in Round bandmate Mikele Edwards, who was joined by Pink Skull’s Julian Grefe (a.k.a. S PRCSS). You can take a look at our pretty photos from the evening that play with the shadows and lights HERE.

Dangerous Ponies Opening for Reptar & Rubblebucket at The Blockley Dec. 6

Posted on:

Dangerous Ponies have been hiding out in the studio for the past few months working on new material for their upcoming third release only really emerging for big shows. (BTW: Expect to hear the group veering off in a different direction with the next album. I hear that some of the songs that they are currently fleshing out are leaning towards the psychedelic and surf rock genres, but I’m sure that they’ll still contain the band’s usual good time vibes.) Well, tonight Dangerous Ponies will be opening for the “Rubbletar Tour” at The Blockley so you know the showcase with buzzing outfits Reptar and Rubblebucket this evening is one that you’ll want to attend. Though it’s starting to get cold again, there will be plenty of warm bodies dancing off the chill at the University City music venue so come join them. The Blockley, 3801 Chestnut St., $8:30, $15, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

True Gold Opening for Psychic Teens at KFN Dec. 6

Posted on:

South Philly shoegaze-y psych rockers True Gold will be performing tonight in the upstairs at Kung Fu Necktie’s own little DIY-esque lounge. It might be the band’s last show for a while. (Hopefully it’s because they’ll be working on recording and releasing a proper album.) True Gold will be opening for Psychic Teens, who have certainly been in high demand lately and active performing out so I’m expecting the trio to be keeping things tight, and of course, rockin’ the dark, horror vibes. Also on the bill is Bloomington, Indiana’s Kam Kama and fellow locals Combine. Kung Fu Necktie (Upstairs), 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $8, 21+ – Alexis V.

Kurt Vile Announces New Album Tentatively Scheduled for Spring 2013

Posted on:

In an interview with Spin, Kurt Vile talked about his new album tentatively scheduled for release in spring 2013 via Matador Records. It was postponed due to the early birth of his second child during the mixing and mastering process in Brooklyn. Once again, producer John Agnello has joined him in the studio, and there will be contributions from Ape School’s Michael Johnson, harpist Mary Lattimore, Woods frontman Jeremy Earl as a percussionist , Royal Trux’s Jennifer Herrema as a guest vocalist, Warpaint drummer Stella Mozgawa, and Beachwood Sparks’ Farmer Dave Scher. Vile describes the record as: “It’s totally our Tusk, but no cheese. Just rock.” Well, maybe he’ll be able to snag himself an opening slot on Fleetwood Mac’s upcoming reunion tour. Hopefully they won’t mind the “no cheese” comment. You can read the rest of Kurt’s interview HERE.

New Track: “I Had a Dream I Did Everything Right” – White Birds

Posted on:

Here’s a new track called “I Had a Dream I Did Everything Right” from White Birds, who have been quite silent until now. Well, the heartfelt song also came with a message (below) from frontman James Harvey, which might help explain why this has been so.

“So I’ve been a really shitty person to the people I care about the most for some time now. I’ve been drinking too much, saying things that I don’t mean, and pushing everyone who I care about the most in my life as far away from me as possible. This is my apology. I’m getting my shit together. I love you all. You know who you are.”
