Cousin Brian Tour Kickoff at Hong Kong Garden Dec. 15

Posted on:

This evening’s early all-ages show at Hong Kong Garden will be the kickoff to Cousin Brian’s upcoming tour. The antagonistic four-piece dropped one of the most underrated local releases this year in their full-length First that is available via Mallrat Records, which was started by Slutever’s Nicole Snyder. While their debut LP is filled with infectious pop hooks that may inspire impromptu sing-alongs, there is no doubt when you see the unpredictable crew live that they are punx through and through. The show will also double as a release celebration for Skate Jawn’s 15th issue, and will be catered by Hoop Jones’ Fast Food Catering. Joining Cousin Brian on a packed bill are Slutever, Slow Animal, Trepanning, Vengeance and the Feral Dogs, Cold Foamers, and Bug Chasers. Hong Kong Garden, (Please contact one of the acts or the venue for more details.), 5pm, $5, All Ages – Q.D. Tran

Blacklisted Opening for Into Another at Union Transfer Dec. 15

Posted on:

Hardcore mainstays Blacklisted are more indebted to grunge than any newcomer to their music would expect. They use it to craft frantic yet accessible songs that bridge the spectrum of hardcore and punk. Their latest studio release "So You Are A Magician?" comes courtesy once more of Six Feet Under Records and kicks just as much ass as we’ve grown accustomed to from these guys. Tonight will see them going head to head with openers, the equally-stories Into Another, Primitive Weapons and Gypsy. – Union Transfer, 1026 Spring Garden St., 8:30pm, $15 – $16, All Ages – Alyssa Greenberg

Weekend Warrior, December 14 – 16

Strand of Oaks has had a helluva 2012, which saw him release another beautiful album in Dark Shores and found him reaching out to the masses on tours with the likes of Bowerbirds, Yellow Ostrich, and The Tallest Man on Earth. Showalter is all set to wrap up his successful year with his first headlining show at Johnny Brenda’s this Saturday, and it will likely be one of the last chances to see him play a hometown show before he heads for a tour of Sweden and Norway with Tallest Man on Earth in 2013. Little Big League will have plenty to celebrate when they open the show since they recently finished up work on their upcoming debut LP that should see the light of day at the beginning of next year. Buried Beds are another band who had a great year and will have some big things in store for the new year, so when they take the stage you might just get a preview of what is to come. It’s going to be a righteous locals only evening. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford St., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Serpent Throne Bringin’ the Heaviness at JB’s Dec. 14

Posted on:
Given all the sunn o)))-derived drone that’s proliferated in recent years, it’s both retro and refreshing to hear a band so unabashedly rooted in doom metal’s hallowed past. Serpent Throne, with a name honoring their demonic inspirations and all manner of stoner-prog-doom power moves at their beck and call, are one of those fantastically old-fashioned and workman-like groups. Their commanding sound, exemplified on Ride Satan Ride (a title that speaks for itself if there ever was one), is so immediate that the lack of vocals is a strength; they would only detract from the heaviness. Rejoice this holiday season, for Serpent Throne has enough smoke-wreathed seventies riffs and Satanic glory for all. Eye and Randall of Nazareth are the bookends to this mighty evening. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 Frankford Ave., 9:15 PM, $10, 21+ – Alyssa Greenberg

The Interest Group Performing w/Mean Lady at North Star Bar Dec. 13

Posted on:

Ever since making their live performance debut at Kung Fu Necktie in early July, The Interest Group has been tantalizing audiences with their mystical psychedelic haze and siren song of singer Marissa Lesnick. And it took very little time for the likes of Pitchfork to gravitate towards their single “The Boys and the Girls.” The band, which also features current member of Bananas Symphony and former member of Blackhawks Yohsuke Araki, will be the perfect addition to tonight’s lineup at North Star Bar that also features Delaware’s Mean Lady, who are led by the beautiful vocals of Katie Dill and recently released a 7” via Fat Possum, and NYC’s The Last Royals. Rounding out the lineup will be local soulful indie songwriter Geron Hoy. North Star Bar, 2639 Poplar St, 8pm, $8, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Radiator Hospital Heading South of the Border (of Market St.) at Jose Pistola’s Dec. 12

Posted on:

While I’m sure Radiator Hospital will be winning over the hearts of many performing in makeshift spaces, it always piques my interest to hear about established businesses that rarely host shows – if ever. Well, that will be happening tonight at Jose Pistola’s when the Center City Mexican restaurant/bar opens their doors to an all-ages show featuring Sam Cook-Parrott, whose current incarnation of Radiator Hospital includes some of the venue’s kitchen staff. It will also mark the live performance debut of West Philly outfit Great Thunder. So if you have no interest in seeing Paul McCartney bastardize Nirvana tunes on national television this evening, this is your opportunity to take a stand, and support some local music. I’m sure that it will be greatly appreciated. Jose Pistola’s, 263 S. 15th St., 9:30pm, Free, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

Cold Fronts Keepin’ Ya Young at KFN Dec. 12

Posted on:

Tonight the steady rolling stuck-in-your-head pop-rock vehicle known as Cold Fronts makes a visit to Kung Fu Necktie. This group has that knack for building a comfortable energetic groove, utilizing a dual guitar front that weaves between chunky power chords and slick runs. A tightly connected bass-percussion combination is the starting block, which propels the music into perpetual motion, while the lyrics tap into universal youth exuberance, making their songs ready-made crowd pleasers. They’ll be joined on the bill by all-girl pop-punk Japanese quartet the Suzan and local trio Ton-Taun for the PBR-presented showcase. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $8, 21+ – Michael Colavita
