The New Sound of Pet Milk at Ortlieb’s Jan. 20

Posted on:

With former lead singer Adriane Dalton’s recent departure to Brooklyn, you’ll find a new voice guiding Pet Milk tonight at Ortlieb’s Lounge. Singer Sarah Schimeneck has been practicing with the group (with Dalton’s blessing), and will be fronting the local noise pop outfit. If you didn’t make it out to her debut performance in November at The Barbary with Grass Widow and Swearin’, then this evening is a good opportunity to experience the band’s new sound in an intimate setting. They’ll also be joined by a fledgling project called Hippie Cult that features Nothing’s drummer Anthony Rossi. Ortlieb’s Lounge, 847 N. 3rd St., 10pm, Free, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Archer Spade Performance Series w/Mary Lattimore/Jeff Zeigler at Studio 34 Jan. 19

Posted on:

Archer Spade, a.k.a. Nick Millevoi and Dan Blacksberg, will be presenting the first of their monthly performance series at Studio 34 tonight. The showcases bring the duo’s friends from out of town to share bills with local musically-inclined pals for nights of what I am sure will be interesting combinations. This evening matches the spacey drone of harpist Mary Lattimore and synths of Arc in Round’s Jeff Zeigler with learned Brooklyn guitarist/composer Adam Caine. You should definitely expect some improvised, experimental sounds filling the rad West Philly multi-purpose space. Studio 34, 4522 Baltimore Ave., 8pm, $12, All Ages – Q.D. Tran

The National Rifle Celebrate Their LP Release at JB’s Jan. 19

Posted on:

Ever since the spring of last year, The National Rifle have been hard at work on their first full-length album Almost Endless. After launching a successful Kickstarter campaign to crowd source funds, the band entered the studios of producers Brian McTear and Jon Low to laydown the groundwork. The end result takes the loud rockin’ indie punk beats of before, and gives them a more downtempo synth laden sound. Before its official release on Jan. 22nd, the four-piece is all set to celebrate at Johnny Brenda’s tonight. They’ll be joined by the no nonsense countrified, punk-ish rock of Crills Wilson and groove rockers The New Connection. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford St., 9pm, $10, 21+ (Photo by Jon Stars) – Bill McThrill

Weekend Warrior, January 18 – 20

Posted on:

After a European sojourn, Everyone Everywhere is back home celebrating the release of their 2nd full-length eponymous album tonight at the Barbary. On their latest LP, the quartet refines their sound while still exhibiting the familiar qualities that endear their music to the masses – lyrics that reflect the ongoing struggle between the monologue inside our heads and the reality we live. Searching for answers and responding with bass lines that create anticipation, guitar riffs that rev up your mind, and percussion that smacks you right in face. Everyone Everywhere takes their personal cards and lays them on the table for all to see, while rocking out in the process. Tonight, they will be selling badass coffee mugs that will only be available in a limited quantity (50). Also joining in on the fun will be the heavy-handed psych-garage rock of Bandname as well as raw indie punkers Glocca Morra. The Barbary, 951 Frankford Ave., 6pm, $10, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Lovable Weirdos Univox at PhilaMOCA Jan. 18

Posted on:

It seems like some kind of egregious sin to keep going back to “Tonight,” the A-side to Univox‘s latest 7-inch single, but I make no apologies for my repeat plays. Don’t blame me; blame that song’s heady mix of outrageous levels of glam and heartstring-tugging. Univox carries a torch for anthemic, glitter-smeared revivalist power pop, a niche that no local group before them had managed (or tried) to elevate to such heights, and it’s doubtful that anybody is going to try to knock them off that pedestal now. They’re making a triumphant return to the stage this evening at PhilaMOCA with Brooklyn’s Pow-Wow! and Philly’s Acres of Diamonds and Lux Perpetua – all similarly-spirited weirdos. The Philly Opry w/Birdie Busch at JB’s January 18

Posted on:
The Philly Opry, a storied event where local artists come together to honor classic Americana artists, returns to Johnny Brenda’s tonight for its 3rd annual event. But tonight’s Opry is an extra special one since it doubles as the record release party for Birdie Busch’s new album, Birdie Busch and the Greatest Night. The ambitious LP features a playlist of songs that the artist has conceptualized since her 2006 debut The Ways We Try, and was crowd-sourced using PledgeMusic, a fundraising site that also donates proceeds to a non-profit of the musician’s choice. It was also the first time that Busch was able to step into the recording studio with her full backing band, and the occasion was captured by Nathan Sabatino, who previously worked on Dr. Dog’s Be the Void. Birdie and her band have much to celebrate tonight, and they’ll be joined by Boston-based string band Joy Kills Sorrow and guitarist Jason Loughlin. BTW: She’ll also be performing an improvised live score to a film with Carl Cheeseman this Tuesday at PhilaMOCA for Tuesday Tune-Out. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford St, 9pm, $12 – $15, 21+ – Bill McThrill

New Music Video: “Opium Den/Fade to Blue” – Blues Control

Check out Blues Control‘s hallucinogenic new music video for the track "Opium Den/Fade to Blue" from their latest album Valley Tangent (Drag City)! It was directed by video-artist Kathy Rose, and premiered earlier today via ARTINFO. The duo will be hitting the road soon for an extensive tour of the U.S. Unfortunately, there is no Philly date scheduled in their calendar yet so you’ll just have to puff down and zone out to this art piece.

International House Philly’s Spring Arts Preview w/A Sunny Day in Glasgow at Ibrahim Theater Jan. 17

Posted on:

With A Sunny Day in Glasgow’s mastermind Ben Daniels living halfway around the world in Sydney, Australia, their live performances have come few and far between as of late. That is why you should definitely take advantage of their free show tonight at the Ibrahim Theater where they’ll be providing a live soundtrack to science film clips and fragments from Roman Vishniac as part of International House Philadelphia’s Spring Arts Preview. The band will then head back into the studio with Uniform Recording’s Jeff Zeigler to finish up mixing their new album, which hopefully means their drought of shows will be coming to an end soon. Ibrahim Theater – International House Philadelphia, 3701 Chestnut St., 7pm, Free (w/RSVP), All Ages – Q.D. Tran

Lantern Ready to Set Things Ablaze at JB’s Jan. 17

Posted on:

Lantern, a blast of snarling rock heaven, are headlining tonight at Johnny Brenda’s, along with irately loud Dong Johnson and fierce female pop-punkers Amanda X. Even without their 2012 nod from VICE, their upwards trajectory was cemented by the strength of last year’s Dream Mine, which captivated with its paleo-punk rawness. “Out of Our Heads” blends vintage, Stooges-era thrashing with Zachary Fairbrother’s insouciant vocals, and the ambient noise tracks that stud the album feel more like artistic nods to some of their more Krautrock-y reference points (“Untitled” could be a dirtied-up Can demo) than distracting filler. All in all, a set from Lantern promises enough wattage to power through a citywide blackout. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Alyssa Greenberg
