New Track: “Mercury Retrograde” – Purling Hiss

Posted on:

Purling Hiss just shared a new track from their upcoming album Water on Mars called "Mercury Retrogade," which you’ll soon discover is a more polished recording than your used to from the former scuzz rockers. Sounds like their time spent in a professional studio at Miner Street for their Shaking Through session had an influence on this new record that will be out March 19 via Drag City. You can catch them on April 5 at Johnny Brenda’s where you’ll most likely get to hear how some of the new songs sound live.

Busses Opening for Snowden at JB’s Feb. 20

Posted on:

It’s feels like things have been really quiet over in the Busses camp. Possibly it was because they were searching for a new practice space in Fishtown, or maybe the rumors of tensions running a little high during the last recording sessions for their EP found the band at the crossroads of a much-needed break. And of course, life and shit just simply happens. I’m rooting for the usual time needed to work on new material. Whatever was the case, the rock trio has woken from their winter hibernation, and will be opening for Snowden at Johnny Brenda’s tonight. Also on board for support is Philly five-piece Belgrade who recently finished their new 9-song LP that is currently scheduled for release in April. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. The Deli Philly’s Best of 2012 Poll Top Performers: Cheers Elephant

Posted on:

This past year has proven to be a very busy one for psych-pop act Cheers Elephant. The band has been incessantly performing shows since the release of their latest full-length album Like Wind Blows Fire this past April. In addition to headlining a number of local spots, 2012 also saw the band sharing the stage with some national acts as well, which included Mayer Hawthorne, Brooklyn-based Rubblebucket, San Francisco Area’s the Mother Hips, and backing the legendary Chubby Checker, just to name a few. Next month, the band will embark on a headlining tour across the U.S., which will include a stop at SXSW. With the quartet’s live performances gaining more notoriety, Cheers Elephant is feeding off the buzz and carrying the momentum. Quentin Stoltzfus hasn’t released an album since Mazarin’s We’re Already There (2005). However, we are pleased to learn this morning that “over the last seven years somewhere between producing albums for friends, pulling hours as a professional mover, and building a world class recording studio Quentin wrote, re-wrote, recorded and re-recorded an album” for his latest project Light Heat, which also consists of Paul Maroon, Matt Barrick, Peter Bauer and Walter Martin from The Walkmen. He’ll be dropping his full-length self-titled debut on June 25 via Ribbon Music. Below is a new track called “The Mirror” that appeared earlier today on Spin’s website. The Deli Philly’s Best of 2012 Poll Top Performer: Chill Moody

Posted on:

2012 found Chill Moody seriously gettin’ his hustle on, and though he didn’t manage to “take over” XXL’s coveted Freshman cover, the West Philly emcee did grab the attention of Billboard Magazine among the sea of notable acts at the two-day Roots Picnic. He also closed the year strong with a sold-out show at the TLA for the release of his new album RFM, which stands for “Running From Myself.” The year placed Chill Moody’s name on the lips of multiple Philly tastemakers while his music began to frequent the airwaves more often, helping to launch him into good company with the rest of our Best of 2012 Poll Top Performers. Looking like “nice things” to come for the West Chilly rapper! (BTW: You can view The Deli Philly’s complete list of emerging artists to keep your eye on HERE.) – H.M. Kauffman
