Cheers Elephant are back in their old stomping grounds after an extensive national tour and stop at SXSW. Their most recent release Like Wind Blows Fire is rock through rose-colored glasses – the same rosy pink that dominates the LP’s cover art. The pop-rock outfit keeps their sound relatively simple and put together. It’s the effects-laden guitar, played by Jordan Del Rosario, which gives them their psychedelic feel. Combine this with a tight drum kick by Travelin’ Matt, deep bass lines from Robert Kingsley, and dreamy, low-key vocals by Derek Krzywicki, making for great lazy day summer jams. They’ll be opening for Darwin Deez, a North Carolina native who got his start in The Big Apple and has his own eclectic sound. Sometimes glitchy, often electronic and upbeat, Deez is sure to bring the party to the Church tonight. First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut Street, $12, 8:30pm, All Ages – Shaylin O’Connell

The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Mohican
Do not call local instrumental rock quartet Mohican a post-rock band. The Philly natives recently impressed us with their patient, stoney jams, and took top honors in our Featured Artist(s) Poll. You can learn more about the group’s dislikes and likes in our interview HERE. Also catch them live on Thursday, April 25 at the North Star Bar.
Arrah and the Ferns Opening for Jason Anderson at Studio 34 April 3
Arrah and the Ferns bring their countrified indie pop-rock to West Philly’s cozy Studio 34 as part of tonight’s Folkadelphia-presented showcase. Led by Muncie, Indiana transplant Arrah Fisher’s charmingly sweet vocals, the band should have plenty of new material to share after recently locking themselves away in a cabin in the woods to record their long-awaited new album that I hope to see the light of day sooner than later. They’ll be supporting prolific New England singer-songwriter Jason Anderson along with Leigh Jones and John Craigie. Studio 34, 4522 Baltimore Ave., 8pm, $10, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

Welch will be performing a matinee show this Saturday at West Philly’s Real World.

Debut Blackhawks LP Finally Available for Streaming
When Cough Cool, a.k.a. Dan Svizeny, tweeted yesterday on April Fool’s Day that Blackhawks, the defunct project from Svizeny and Yohsuke Araki (The Interest Group, BAnanas Symphony), would be releasing their debut album today, it was hard to take him seriously. After all, it had been 2+ years since the bands demise, and Svizeny has also built a reputation as being a sardonic tweeter, which now makes sense for him to share this news on the day usually meant for acceptable pranking. Well, happy day after April Fool’s Day – check out Blackhawks’ debut self-titled LP! Hopefully someone picks up this album and resuscitates this project.

Eric Bresler, the series’ founder and PhilaMOCA’s Creative Director, will be taking over the duties for the first time. Headlining tonight will be the always outrageous Sweatheart, who are performing select songs from this evening’s featured movie, which is “one of the greatest of all ‘80s teen films.” Nicee! (BTW: Bresler, who is a truly knowledgeable and obsessed film enthusiast, is also the founder of Cinedelphia, and he’ll be bringing us the inaugural Cinedelphia Film Festival this month, which is a 24-day celebration of Philly-related cinema. You can check out the festival’s schedule and purchase tickets for its unique events HERE!) PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $5, All Ages – Q.D. Tran
